Gotta love good cop news for a change

https://abc13.com/texas-city-police-respond-to-family-party-called-for-alleged-shooting-call-of-kids-with-nerf-guns/10586505/

Quote:
TEXAS CITY, Texas (KTRK) -- A Texas City family is praising the way police handled the call that was made of their kids playing with Nerf guns.

Sunday evening was a family birthday celebration for the Reynas. It was the first time they had seen each other in over a year and the cousins were the most excited.

"They were running around the yard and they had Nerf wars," said Adriana Reyna. "They were wrestling and just enjoying family time."

However, panic quickly set in when they saw police lights and Texas City officers walking toward their home. It was then that the children's demeanor changed.

"They were very frightened," Adriana said. "All of us were. We did not have a clue what was going on."

It turned out someone called 911 on the family, stating there were gunshots and people fighting, according to Adriana.

Taide Pineda was one of the responding officers who said he did not see any weapons, just Nerf guns. Once they noticed what was going on, the officers quickly switched gears and made sure to ease any fears. In fact, a photo was snapped after Officer Pineda gave the kids some toys. He has boxes of them in his unit and said he's made it a priority to put the community children first and change their mentality when it comes to how they view officers.

"To me, kids are the future. So we need to make sure that the kids feel safe, that they can trust us," Pineda said. "So we need to build a relationship with them, try to make them grow up not hating us."

Now, the family hopes the caller didn't intentionally single them out.

"People need to be cautious how they (make) those kinds of calls," said Adriana's sister-in-law, Yvette Reyna. "It could have been worse than what it was you know? Officers could've had their guns drawn, and it could've gone left really quick."

"I really give credit to the department for how they handled it," said Adriana. "We even shared some laughs whenever we saw the aftermath of the Nerf bullets throughout the yard. So, it turned out to be a good outcome."

Now that's a smart officer.

I think there are a lot more of ^ these cops ^ than you'd think based on the news. It's unfortunate, there's not a lot more stories like this getting reported.

Absolutely, whether it was a mistake by an old person or malicious by a neighbor or a stupid prank by a kid, they need some attention.

Yup.

We have a local hero right here. I think he is planning to retire soon, and recently came down with Covid. At any rate, everything I know about him suggests he is a credit to his department and to his community. Not sure of his name. Mike-something. I call him...."Sir."

Never met a cop I liked much. Most I just don't want to be within 100 feet. They just radiate negative vibes. Several place I've visited the cops had to be from another world. They fit in exactly nowhere.

If my job, day in and day out was to deal with the dregs of society or, for the most part, be the target of ire or deal with the aftermath of the dregs of society, I'd probably be a bit negative.

ROFLMAO.

I have done OK so far, although the fact that you could work Jan until Jan of the next year, and if you quit in Jan, you wouldn't get your 401k match for the previous year because they pay 401k matching in Feb for the prior year. If you leave, you don't get your matching.

Good on those cops. I think the cops should have jumped in with the nerf guns

meanwhile in Canada...

Good for them, what piece of shat called the cops saying gunfire! They should be arrested for false call.

damn..you are a negative person!!

my brother is a policeman.

one time a NM policewoman came up to him and asked if he remembered her. they were at a gathering honoring fallen cops. my brother didn't remember the lady. she reminded him. when my brother was a rookie or just not a rookie, he kept getting called to a DV call. there was a tiny girl, he sat with. he kept going back visiting to check up on her. she said she was that little girl, and the kindness he showed made her want to be a cop. the same type of cop that helps people. she is now a Las Crusas policeman. a mutual cop friend told me this story.

I don't see that side of my brother. he can be a dick to me. being Chinese we don't express a whole lot of love. but he takes his job seriously. real serious.

Cool story.

I haven't gotten to see that side of police much, probably because I haven't needed it. But, my limited experience with police has been that most are good folks doing a job that is often crappy and thankless.

Yep, I'm sure there are some sheisseheads, but that goes for pretty much any/every group of 5 or more people.

with this much negativity regarding EVERY policeman you have encountered, perhaps the issue isn't with them

Like any other group, cops are not homogenous. Some good, some bad. Unfortunately the media today makes sure we hear of every single bad, and rarely touts the good.

Its hard to see good cops when so many have f cked with you. I really struggle with this. It feels bad that I do not feel protected when see lights.

Yup, I suspect the cops aren’t the problem. I have a good friend who is a local PD and SWAT team, a brother in law who is ICE, and have drank beer with plenty of cops. At the core they are all just normal guys trying to do their job and get home safely every night. Ever get shot at, spit on, insulted and yelled at on a daily basis? Because these guys do.
