Anyone here have a 2018-2019 4Runner?

My wife has a 2014 FJ which she loves, but wishes it had more "bells & whistles", such as heated seats, navigation, leather, and a sunroof, etc.. I mentioned the 4Runner to her, and we've specced out a few SR5 Premiums, around 38-39K. When I had the FJ in for it's 30K mile service, one of the sales guys asked if we'd be interested in trading it in for right around 30K, which is about what we paid for it in November 13. Question is, the FJ has been bulletproof, and how do you think the 4Runner will compare, and would you make that trade?

They stopped making them and they are really popular.

And that would be 5 years, not 4.

I have a 2010 limited which is basically the same thing. I think they were able to squeeze a few ponies out of that newer motor. I have 80xxx miles and its been absolutely trouble free. My touch screen Nav is not working, but I almost never use it. The 4 runners are screwed together very well.

I can't say anything about the 2018 or 2019 4Runner other than I am thinking of buying one. Too bad they don't offer the manual transmission.

I currently have a 1997 4Runner SR5 with the manual transmission and have 363,000 miles on it. Mostly highway miles. It has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. The drivetrain has been flawless and I always performed the scheduled maintenance. No rust either because I had Zeibart do their thing back when it was new.

So, if you like the 4Runner, get it. It will last if you keep the fluids clean and perform the scheduled maintenance.

Friends have the 2018 4Runner. He really likes it but he is a Toyota guy through and through.

35 thousand miles so far, good to go.

I own a 2003 4Runner that has 250K plus on the clock and is my wife's DD. She won't think of getting new until it poses a reliability problem.

Concerning the FJ - we own two. My daughter has a 2007 she has owned since late 2008. It has 198k on it and has been trouble free. She gets dealer offers on it every time she takes it in. It has depreciated less than 25% from what we paid used.

My son has a 2013 with low miles. Little to no depreciation.

They are fine for what they are...I love the interior roominess. I am driving my daughters FJ a few times a week since she lives in NYC and left her FJ with us

I had a 2016 4Runner Trail (now called TRD Off Road). It was the Premium with pleather seats, sunroof, heated seats, nav, etc.

The engine is a bit anemic, MPG around 16-18 but otherwise a nice truck. Still built in Japan (as was the FJ), in fact the FJ was built on the 4Runner platform. I traded it for an F150 w/ Ecoboost, slightly better MPG and a heck of a lot more acceleration.

Eric at Pelican turned me on to this Pedal Commander. I have it on middle setting. The pedal feel is day and night like its suppose to be. There's no actual power gain, but the feel is day and night like if you are driving with another 100 hp.

That is the reason I sold my last FJC (I have owned a 08 and 11). You have to beat on the six to get any performance out of it and God help you if there is a head wind...

Glad to help, hope your 4Runner is still treating you well!

Any car with a sluggish pedal from the drive by wire system will benefit from a Pedal Commander or any other similar device, giving you a throttle cable driven car feel. It's one of my biggest pet peeves with modern cars, so having this is a godsend!

Having sold Paul his 2003 4Runner and having had multiple late model 4Runners as rentals I am thoroughly unimpressed. In my opinion they are significantly cheaper than the older models from top to bottom including the drivetrain and interior. They still look great and are well sized but I wouldn’t buy a new one.

I have a couple in silver, all 2018’s but they are SR5’s so not leather and no frills. I had a bunch of 2017’s before that (we use them for business each in silver). Besides the front drivers cloth seat wearing in the 17 we’ve never had an issue beyond oil changes. I will caveat that we turn them over with about 20k on them. I think the employees beat them up and they just keep on going which is why I go back year after year.

Yeah, having that thing is like a brand new car with another 100hp along with it. Drive by wire sucks. The FJ has the same motor and drive train as the 4 runner (If I remember correctly?). Head wind going over a mt pass out here in the west was never a problem. Went right through it without any bogging down at all.

I bought a 2018 TRD Off Road Premium in May to replace my last Land Rover. It is fully loaded with every option offered except the active corner management. So far no complaints in the almost 10k miles I have put on it. I had a 2006 4Runner for 256k miles and I must say the fit and finish is better on the 5th generation. Toyota has finally upgraded the dash/door materials too. The TRD's have the e locker diff, manual transfer case, and ATRAC that your FJ has. I plan to do a 3" lift, rock sliders, winch, and more off road tires as I enjoy playing off the beaten path. My MPG's are right around 20 and I am happy (was getting 12 with the Land Rover on premium). My only complaint is I wish the tow rating was higher as we are looking at wakeboard boats and most are going to be over the 4Runner's limit. I also don't care for the sad catfish front end but in black it isn't that bad.

I am looking forward to a long uneventful relationship with the 4Runner and plan to take it to Moab/Telluride when it is done with my brother for a boy's trip. It will be nice not worrying about breaking down 2000 miles away from home.

A buddy bought a new 18 about 4 weeks ago. Last night I asked about it. He said the same. He drives about 90 miles daily and said being slow would be easier to take if it did not use so much gas.

The new ones offer marginally more HP than my old 2003 but are way more thrashy and require a lot more RPM to get going. I never felt like my 2003 was lacking for power, and was able to typically get about 22 MPG on the highway.

Well gentlemen, thanks for all the feedback. We pulled the trigger and picked up our 18 SR5 Premium on Wednesday. They gave us $30,920 for the 14 FJ with 31K miles, which is more than our cash out of pocket when we bought it new in November 13. The trade in then didn't count, since I was ready to sell it for $500 before the dealer gave us $3,500.

Anyhow, wife is happy with the bells and whistles, and I'm happy with the fit and finish, looks, road feel, and overall performance. Shifting it manually seems to elicit better acceleration, and it's no slouch. It does feel bigger than the FJ though. Overall, 200 mile in, we're happy. Picture to follow.
