Package thieves vs. NASA engineer

I love the fact that he openly accepts the gross over engineering and owns it...also that he posts the video

TL;DW NASA engineer doesn't like people stealing packages so he built a bait package that sprays glitter everywhere, dispenses fart spray and records everything.

Sooner or later 12-18-2018 11:53 AM

Good stuff.

dan88911 12-18-2018 12:39 PM

LOL loved it.

cstreit 12-18-2018 12:55 PM

Amazon should do this. Customers sign up to have a percentage of bait packages delivered to them. Package records gps and images, posts them for law enforcement.

If perps knew they had a 1 in 10 chance of being busted, they might think twice. Ink bombs like banks use instead of glitter though....

mfiazzo 12-18-2018 12:55 PM

Genius, pure Genius

herr_oberst 12-18-2018 01:05 PM

Fantastic! I love that!

As a semi professional armchair quarterback, I thought of a couple of additions after watching and enjoying the video:

• Use compressed air along with the centrifuge to displace the glitter to a wider area

• Somehow permeate the glitter with the stink as it's being displaced so that it lasts and lasts and lasts. Weeks or months. (Maybe this was already done, it's not really addressed)

(And a third, as an afterthought) - some sort of ridiculously loud ruckus when the lid comes off. I'm thinking train whistle, or the equivalent of a Taurus Judge being fired point blank from the eardrum.

onewhippedpuppy 12-18-2018 01:07 PM

Saw that posted earlier and loved it. Also had the thought that this is why many terrorists are engineers.

aschen 12-18-2018 01:18 PM

been subscribed to his channel for a while now (mark Roper). He is great and good to watch with kids.

RSBob 12-18-2018 01:24 PM

Too bad you can’t buy genuine skunk spray.

drcoastline 12-18-2018 01:58 PM

Great, should have an ink bomb like a money bag from a bank.

OldSpool87 12-18-2018 02:14 PM

Brilliant with one potential flaw- the fart scented thief knows where the package came from and could retaliate.

The auto-dispensing fart spray is the best.

All too true. Looks like the guy is a true rocket scientist.

Perhaps true in some cases but I'd wager the knuckleheads who steal these packages probably don't know what package came from which address in most cases.

Not to mention that there is now documentation that they stole - and could face arrest. If I were in their shoes that last thing I'd do is continue to "poke the bear".

Tervuren 12-18-2018 03:38 PM

The thing that astounds me is the standard of clothing, car, possessions in background, etc; all much greater than what I grew up with.

Why are they stealing packages?

dewolf 12-18-2018 03:55 PM

A rotating spray can of fluro paint.

stealthn 12-18-2018 04:30 PM

Loved it,now can he build one that cuts off people’s right hand?

Guess that happens where you live but where I live the police can’t be bothered. Grand theft, yes. So people are attaching large drop boxes to their houses with a pad lock or combo spinning lock. Enough to deter the lazy unmotivated thief. If you receive multiple deliveries you are skewed unless you have multi-bins/locks. There are lots of these things on Amazon - of course. Create the problem and sell the solution. Ingenious.

I was thinking the same thing. Isn't the first thief driving a Mercedes?

T77911S 12-19-2018 03:46 AM

awesome!!

surprised he does not get sued if glitter gets in someones eyes

BTW, people just suck.

T77911S 12-19-2018 03:48 AM

he should have put spray paint in there instead of fart spray.

I suspect that's why he blurred out their faces. No point in giving someone a reason to retaliate. Not to mention, he does have their picture and some of their addresses. The bad guys seemed to be amused by it... for the most part.

Jims5543 12-19-2018 04:20 AM

Never had a package stolen from us. Someone would have to be bold to do that.

Somewhat related, I stole this idea from The Chive, we put a cooler out with waters and snacks for our delivery people.

The mail lady actually gave us a thank you card.

T77911S 12-19-2018 07:09 AM

what gets me is it was not just a one time theft.

Musk sack from a deer is close enough

Tervuren 12-19-2018 12:46 PM

I do believe his primary intent was to both capture video of the theft, and recover the video capture package.

The package was designed to annoy such that it would be discarded upon opening.

Some of your other ideas in this thread might result in the package being destroyed instead of discarded.

what a d#ck. there goes his credibility.

The Synergizer 12-22-2018 07:20 AM

Yep. The all seeing eye of the internet. It could have stood on it's own but he had to fake parts...

Or he is a master marketer. Got millions to watch at first, then once it died down, admits it's partially fake which is picked up news media and millions more watch.

He's a YouTuber so it's not like anyone had him neck and neck with Walter Cronkite in the credibility department anyways.

aigel 12-23-2018 02:32 PM

Well, we all here wondered how theft was this prevalent. In most places you probably would have to wait weeks for a bite. Guy didn't have the patience, or friends in bad neighborhoods and probably also worried about losing the device, so he paid people to stage it. The whole video is very professionally made. Unfortunately there isn't much "reality" anywhere, not on TV and not on the internet. This is why you need to stop watching other people do crap and go out and do it yourself! :D

The same guy has been "upgrading" his "glitter bomb" every year. I think he's decided to call it quits. This video covers 5 iterations of his glitter bomb plus some extra stuff. Very cool.

You don't use glitter- use fountain pen ink.

Cajundaddy 12-21-2022 06:07 PM

Pretty hilarious series!

mjohnson 12-22-2022 05:30 AM

Maybe a little staged, but I like his channel. My kid really digs the squirrel-olympics...

Cadaverine and putrescine might sub out well for fart spray though.

Then again, I've been reading a doc with the memoirs of a chemist that specialized with organic sulfides/selenides/tellurides. He mentions chemical leaks causing nausea and vomiting miles away and that for months or more a worker reeked of bad things regardless of how they showered or changed clothes. Perhaps this is the path for porch pirates.

Iron gall, like Diamine Registrars. DaVinci used something similar. That stuff doesn't wash or fade...

And, in domestic use, it's cool as it changes color as it oxidizes. Starts out blue, next week it's black!

jamesnmlaw 12-22-2022 06:39 AM

graphite from a photo-copier
liquid manure
a dispersing clumped cat piss biscuit from the litter box
red-dyed pepper spray
bear spray
spring loaded can of snakes (from when we were kids in the 60s)

hang a multi-language sign on the porch warning thieves to not steal

yeah, there would be violent retaliation from the scrotes in NM

just get a PO Box and get things delivered there

get a couple of goons / hire off-duty cops (in uniform) to retrieve your phones from the perp's house

I don't get the sense that it was intentionally fake. Seems like the people that got paid to help scammed him.

I don't think that affects his credibility at all.
