Roadside signs
Vash's thread on triple A doing signs in California made me think of a sign here. A local landmark. People just passing through would be confused. A local landmark, it a largish white sign with "HONEY" written on it in big red letters. It's next to highway 20, a bit north of Lebanon, Oregon. Nothing official about it, but it has the blessing of the hwy. dept. The rural county road that branches off there is named "Honey Sign drive".
First erected by a pioneer family around 1880 or so. Locals have used the sign as a landmark for as long as I can remember. "How to get there? Well, when you see the honey sign, go another mile or two, and..." Year or so ago, a local farmer noticed the sign was getting long in the tooth. An article appeared in the local paper, he asking funding for a replacement to have the same look, but to be made and installed by the same firm that contracts to the state...replacement to be made of the best weather resistant stuff. I was one of those to send a check. In under a week, the funding was done. Gosh, the HONEY sign is glorious. Probably confusing non locals who look for a honey stand. So, any similar signs in your area? I'd like to think of similar landmarks scattered across the land.

I have driven all the way west on I-40 to Barstow, and as far east as to get into NC, but I did not make it to Wilmington. I-40 runs less than 10 miles from my house.

Good stuff! You gave me an idea. Hwy 20 here is the longest hwy. in the USA. Goes from Newport, OR to Boston. I just emailed my state rep. Perhaps our legislature and the Mass. legislature could get together to place a sign on both ends. Just wouldn't be right unless both states did it.
