Windows 7 - Bogged Down Computer - Why?

My work computer has recently become painfully slow. I don't think I have a virus, but this doesn't look right..

I am very low on disk space, could that be the problem?

Any suggestions?

You are showing 25% of the CPU usage, what is the other 75%

The problem isn't so much the memory util, it's the CPU.

Some process or app has your cpu pegged

Click the cpu column and sort by util.

CPU usage shows as 100% right now, but when I look at processes nothing significant shows up...why?

Slide the scroll bar down for that window and look at the rest of the list.

I'd try clicking that 'Show processes from all users' button, you may have someone else logged on that you don't know about.
Just guessing, worth a try.

Not to be that guy but the solution is to go mac if possible. Windows machines are throw aways and not meant to last more than a couple years. This per my network co.

Poppycock. I have a computer next to my knee that is a Win 10 machine now. It started off in Win 7. It still runs fine, but it is old enough the video card and CPU are not really fast enough for my day to day stuff. It does have 32 Gig of RAM and a i5 CPU so it is not a slug.

Macs are great for many things, but are useless in the world of aerial photography and mapping. All the programs use require Win 10 Professional 64 bit. Programs that a MAC running in emulation mode will not work with.

The task manager is using 13% and it is what is trying to balance everything out so all can get done. You'd need a utility to look at it's internal details and there is probably one or two programs fighting with each other. If it were me I'd stop the browser, in your case FireFox, unplug the cable that connects your PC to the network to see if things drop back to normal levels. One thing that Windows will do is make a PC go bonkers if you are not up to date on patches and updates and you might want to see if any are pending.

Finally you can start Task Manager and go to Details at the menu selection at the top and click it, then highlight what ever has highest CPU use and click on "set affinity" and un select the all CPU's box and click on the last one, like in my case it is #7 since I have 8 cores and they start at "0". One of the few places that numbering starts at "0". Then switch back to the performance screen to see what happens.

Last of all check hard drive storage to see if the drive(s) is full and why.

Please let us know what happens. Good luck

We have 3,000 employees, and zero Mac machines....I don't see that as likely solution for me.

(Also, I own nothing 'Apple' and never will)

So a reboot, 6 Windows patches, and all is good. WtF?

That isn't uncommon if you have a pending update. Had you viewed processes from all users you would have seen svchost using a ton.

That has been an issue since the XP days. You would think that would be an easy fix after all these years.

We use third party patch management at work and it is pretty good about telling people when they need to reboot and will let them defer it to the middle of the night if they feel they can't get by while the machine reboots, but at least they get a notification.

At my former job, we had one old Window NT machine. It was over 10 years old, and still ran fine. All we used it for near the end was to run the SCSI 1TB RAID 5 box. Back when NT was new one TB was huge. When we installed our second 24 TB RAID we shut down that old RAID and sent it to the scrapyard.

Far from an expert here, but a big fan of running the free version of "CCleaner" about twice a month. Clears this type of problem immediately.

I was an early Win 10 user and gave that computer away when I was fed up with the MS games. Since bought new desktop and laptop with Win 7............

Win 7 is just not an option for us, anymore than a Mac. We pay huge bucks for our mapping programs. They ALL require Win10 Pro 64 Bit.

My biggest grip about Win 10 is a simple network. I have 3 computers here, and my business partner has 7. Trying to get all the Win 10 Pro systems to play nice nice on the network is a pain. We get everything working and Microsoft comes along with an update, and and kills our network again.
