PCs...are you liquid or air cooled?

I used to be an Apple guy (and a liberal too) long time ago...I always looked down at PCs as complicated, prone to viruses and opposite of user friendly. But Apple is no longer the company it used to be, and you cannot really build a Mac anyways, so that is kind of boring.

Now, I find lots of similarities between PCs and Porsches: they can be air or liquid cooled, various engine sizes (intel i3,5,7 or AMD Ryzen 3,5,7), they can be overclocked (as Porsches can be turbocompressed), and they are easy to work on, for the most part.

Also, you can put a new engine in an old chassis, which is what I recently did by putting an AMD ryzen 3 2200g on an MSI B450 board in and old e-machines. That is Like upgrading a 2.7L with a 3.0L. It will never be like a brand new Porsche, but plenty enough power for what I want to do, which was playing Grand Theft Auto 5, since I am a car guy .

Anyways, I was just curious to see if people shared the same experiences of working on Porsche’s and PCs, and so far I remain an air cooled guy as far as both are concerned

I've always wanted to build a high end water cooled rig. Not because I need it, but just because its geektastic.

My first gig out of college was in microcode development at IBM (microprocessor based network devices), back in the mid-80's....very similar to the ECU on my Carrera....but lots of them in a device. Then I became a mainframe systems programmer (communications) and played with some of the fastest stuff around for a long time. Mainframes....were H20 chilled back in the day....until the late 90s before chip tech evolved further. Multi-million $ plexes...I had the keys to the kingdom too....just one thing I ever regret from those daze...

I never got to play with a Cray...

You forgot the newer i8 cpu. I built one recently with 64 Gig RAM, 2 Tb SSD mirrored drives, and the Nvidia 1080Ti video card.

It is a screamer. I build most of the 10 computers my business partner and I own for our company.

So far all air cooled. The fans can idle along when not needed, and spin up to blow a hard breeze under heavy use. No leaks possible. So far I don’t see the need for water cooling, but I feel that way for 911s as well.

Liquid cooled on mine. I put this one together about 3 years ago. I was cleaning the leaves out of my radiator. Might be time for some upgrades.

What made you decide to get AMD ryzen 3 2200g on an MSI B450 board?

MSI was because the original board was an MSI, and I picked B450 chipset because I knew for sure the bios would be compatible, and overclockable.
As for the processor, I think the ryzen 3 is a fantastic deal for $89 you get 4 cores 8 threads, a fan and an integrated GPU that is enough for the kind of gaming I do.
For my first build I did not want to invest tons of money or overbuild without knowing what the results would be. Later on I can add an extra GPU if I see any limitations.
Also I used 16gb ddr4 3200 because that really helps the integrated GPU.

It is really a very modest setup, in an old case, put together by a middle aged guy . I see kids go crazy these days with transparent cases and leds everywhere. Though I must say those led fans are kinda cool.

I built a water cooled machine years ago. it was the most reliable and trouble free machines I have ever owned. just be sure to use distilled water in case of a leak as it is non corrosive..

Strictly air cooled here. I don't like liquid in the living room where my computer resides.

My latest PC build is liquid cooled. I used the closed loop coolers that Corsair builds for the CPU. I also have liquid cooled graphics card from GeForce. CPU radiator is at the rear of the case and the GPU radiator at the top of the case. Both have the appropriate fans as well. I also have fans to run air over the hard drives. Input fans give the case a positive pressure too.

When running high-end triple-monitor games, the temperatures of both the CPU and GPU are lower than a similar PC build that was only air cooled.

So... for the additional cost, liquid cooling is easy to install with the Corsair and EVGA closed loop systems.

.
you knew the BIOS would be compatible with what?

Yes, 2200g seems like a perfect value build.
I think Ryzen 5 2600 is more heavy-duty, and more $$$

What kind of gaming do you do?

The bios would be compatible with the processor. I read reports that with the B350 chipset people had to update the bios to run the ryzen processors. That may have been on early versions though. The problem is you need another chip to udate the bios, which means delays...Anyhow, I just play GTA5 for now, which is not as intensive as most recent games. Some look awesome though, which means I may have to build a beefier machine in the near future .

Liquid cooling and overclocking are for those who would make a turbo charged twin plugged 356 engine.

Sure, you can do it, but WHY? So many more appropriate venues to spend your money in/on

I previously had a water cooler setup. Over time it developed a pinhole leak at a fitting, cost me a motherboard and 2 video cards. I decided then that if I were going with liquid cooling it would be a fully submerged meal mineral oil rig.

had waterpump once, it broke down in 3 months
was just as noisy as air and didn't cool all that much better anyways
went back to air, cheaper, not as much hassle
