No new bike yet, but great customer service!

I ordered a bike (same as my wife, but bigger) on Sun, Dec 23 from a chain of bike shops that are in the Midwest. The next day (Christmas Eve) I got an email saying that they were assembling my bike to make sure that everything worked and was adjusted correctly, and then they'd repack it and ship it. I hadn't heard anything else since.

I'm not in a huge hurry to get the bike. My wife will get hers on Fri or Sat this week. We are waiting on pedals and saddles too, and those won't arrive until probably next Wed or Thu. And on top of all of that, the weather has been rainy or cold or cold and rainy.

I hadn't heard anything else and was wondering about a tracking number or arrival, so today I hit them up via chat on their website. The guy came back and said something like, "I'm really sorry. I don't know how this happened, but your bike hasn't been shipped yet. It is ready to ship. I'll make sure that it goes out tomorrow. Again, I really apologize for the delay in shipping. To try to make up for the delay, I'll make sure it ships tomorrow and we send it 2nd day air."

I thought "wow, that's crazy!" So I told him "sure, that'd be great." I only paid $39 for shipping.

He came back a few mins later. "I apologize again. For us to ship that 2nd day air would cost us $382. Would it instead be OK if I refund what you paid for shipping and send it via regular shipping tomorrow?"

Considering I only paid $39 for shipping, and the bike, since it is pretty entry level and last years model, was only $849, that seemed more than fair to me.

I assume I'll get the bike sometime between next Wed and Sat which will be fine since we should get our pedals and saddles and the missus will have her bike by then.

I would have loved to have gotten the bike already, but there wouldn't have been much that I could have done with it anyway.

I don't fault them for making the mistake considering it was Christmas and then New Year. I wasn't super productive at work during that time either.

Thanks, will do. I guess that means that an open-end wrench or Allen wrench won't do the trick.

No - The wrench has to be about 1/4 inch thin.

Steve, you are getting soft. I would have gone in there guns blazing and demand you get the bike within the next few hours. How the heck are you gonna survive this big ride being soft like that?

Congrats on not being a dick! I'll bet the rep you talked to appreciated it greatly.

Sounds like the shop did a great job and was honest with you. Very cool all around.

Yeah, it was the holidays and there was no point. All it would have done is made everyone's day suck. I was just glad that they wanted to make up for it in that way. But the free shipping was nice too.

Turned what could've been a miserable experience into a great one that you're sharing. Great lesson here. Love it!

Well, in case anyone has a need, this is the place
https://www.eriksbikeshop.com/

looks like they do cycling, snow skiing, snowboarding and maybe a little skating and other stuff too.

I think they are primarily Minnesota and Wisconsin, but also Illinois, Kansas and Iowa, as well as Internet...

My bike should arrive Wed.
The saddle for the missus should arrive Thu.
pedals and my saddle should arrive Wed as well, I think (part of the regular order for the LBS).
