Stupid impulse purchases you refuse to apologize for

I just "won" an auction for a truly bizarre utility tractor I've wanted for a while. It's a German made [Max Holder] articulating 4WD narrow/mini tractor. It's powered by a ~50HP 3 Cyl turbo diesel and has front/rear PTO and half a million hyd remotes. It comes with a 6' wide front plow and a rear mounted hyd salt grinder box/spreader but you can mount just about any PTO/Hyd implement ever made for anything. Mowers, blowers, sweepers, chippers, etc...

It's goofy as all get-out to look at and that's a huge reason I like it. I'll be moving into my new construction home (with acreage) in a few weeks and the idea of tooling around in this oddity pretending to know what I'm doing just makes me smile. Laugh if you must but please share your similar purchases for entertainment:)

Gratuitous pic of the model. Think of it as a mini Unimog, they are unstoppable.

Well now, that thing is awesome!!! I want one!

lendaddy 01-08-2019 04:35 PM

4' wide and 13' long... goofy as all get out :)

1975porsche 01-08-2019 04:38 PM

That is a sidewalk snow plow here in Toronto.

Seahawk 01-08-2019 04:39 PM

Why would you even think about apologizing for that piece of coolness...I love it.

50hp is a boat load, the only thing that will stop that thing is running out of gas.

Nice.

pete3799 01-08-2019 04:39 PM

Now you can hire yourself out plowing/ salting sidewalks.

Absolutely correct, that's what we buy them for over here too but they are capable (and intended) for so much more. 50 turbo diesel HP in this tiny package is giggle inducing, I haven't been this excited about a purchase since my 930... good grief I'm getting old :)

My boys and I will go through every piece and panel (Tim Hancock style) over the next year or so and I'm trying to come up with a scheme that does the uniqueness justice. I'll just use it this winter but it's got a dedicated stall in the new garage for at least 16 months, the possibilities are endless :)

kach22i 01-08-2019 04:54 PM

Cool.

Shaun @ Tru6 01-08-2019 05:29 PM

That is really neat! Can you attach a backhoe and shovel and stuff like that to it?

Absolutely, it's a Swiss Army knife kind of machine. Ive seen everything from buckets to tree trimmers to lord knows what. If it can run off PTO or Hydraulics (and doesn't need more than 50HP) you can make it work.

:of course dedicated equipment is always better at the task but if you're not operating in volume this is your huckleberry.

Shaun @ Tru6 01-08-2019 05:39 PM

Fantastic toy! you'll have to post pics when using it.

Looks like an adorable scruffy dog that followed you home.

Baz 01-08-2019 05:40 PM

Very cool, Len....apologies not needed!!!

A930Rocket 01-08-2019 05:40 PM

I. Want. One !!!

stealthn 01-08-2019 05:53 PM

That’s a Man Toy!

lendaddy 01-08-2019 06:14 PM

The ridiculous number of hydraulic levers and switches is a bit intimidating but once I rationalized that maybe 30% of them will be in use at any given time it made for a much more comforting mood :) I'm sure guys that use this type of equipment everyday are belly laughing at me but I'm cool with that. So long as I don't drive it through any of my new home's walls I'll be happy :)

fanaudical 01-08-2019 07:18 PM

Wow - I didn't even know that I needed one of those. ...

LakeCleElum 01-08-2019 07:36 PM

I want one to plow snow and be warm........What is it and what do they go for?

Evans, Marv 01-08-2019 08:24 PM

Just when I convinced myself I didn't need another piece of equipment ………..

WPOZZZ 01-08-2019 08:25 PM

I'm thinking this.

john70t 01-08-2019 08:38 PM

stupid = Seriously that'sa unobtainium purchase indeed.

Well done.

ckelly78z 01-09-2019 02:15 AM

Kind of like a cross between a Unimog, and a tractor....looks stout, and capable.

KFC911 01-09-2019 02:19 AM

Thread title is all wrong....

Stupid impulse purchases you brag about...

I want one....have ZERO need, but that doesn't matter ;)

Very cool...

oldE 01-09-2019 02:28 AM

A friend of mine has one for plowing his lot and mowing fields to keep bushes down. Mud will stop them. They do not have a lot of clearance. Other than that, thumbs up.

Best
Les

In running condition I've seen them go for a few grand up to 20+ (for this model which was made in the early to late 80s IIRC).

flipper35 01-09-2019 09:07 AM

I hate you now!

widgeon13 01-09-2019 09:22 AM

Good find!

Crowbob 01-09-2019 09:38 AM

Cool machine.

I want a Toolcat. Two seats, A/C and as an added bonus, they cost more.

I looked into those as well, very cool units. Interestingly there was one at this same auction (2008) in very rough shape and it went for ~$5,500.

It would look awesome chopped a foot with a set of 23 inch wire wheels.

Ah, the typical hot rod car TV show look. And slam it down to the point it is not able to get over any speed bump.

That is a cool toy you found. Like many toys, if only I had Jay Leno money, and his type of space......

Be sure to take photos and start a thread on the restoration. Nothing overly complex, just an occasional update on progress.

Tobra 01-09-2019 12:31 PM

It would be a stupid impulse buy if you lived in a suburban neighborhood.

Actually it would not even be stupid then, just a bit impetuous, perhaps more than you need for mowing the lawn.

Shaun @ Tru6 02-05-2019 05:44 PM

What's the latest on this? Any action pics?

Had to throw it right into service with the crazy weather up here over the last couple of weeks.

I did find a great dealer in the U.P. (Michigan) that has tons of stock and great prices for parts. I wasn't expecting that so it's a huge bonus.

I moved ten times this much snow over the last week but I took this right after it started, not exactly great camera work :)

If I lived up North I would want one of those too.

Stupid impulse purchases you refuse to apologize for

1981 BMW 320i - I placed a cheeky bid on BAT with a 320 at the end, pleased with myself I thought for sure I would get out bid. I stopped the bidding with my amazing sense of humor. I won the car, transferred the funds, and arranged shipping from Denver to Florida. Wife was not amused.

I have considered making it my 15 y/o sons first car, just trying to figure out insuring it. I guess we could toss good liability coverage and skip the collision and comp. It runs perfect and drives as smooth as silk.
