This has been one of the more interesting threads in a long time...zippy rancor, good info from both sides of the aisle.
I talked to my wife about it this weekend during the snow event...she assured me I would, after a few months, find the sound of my own voice comforting on my travels. |

"My Travels With Tank and the Missus",
"Just The Two of Us...Six Legs In All" Book Title suggestions ....hth :) |

I was in New Mexico on a motorcycle ride and we passed a really nice looking RV Park (Angelfire, I looked it up). The amount of $ in Class A's parked there as I cruised by on my way to Red River was staggering. It looked really nice and well taken care of and was kind of off the beaten path.
I imagine there are lots of places like this across the US where you can stay, not the typical KOA type of place. |

 30 minutes into the trip...
Wife; "We're going so slow. How long before we get to San Francisco?" Me: "We're not going through SF Baby. The first stop is the Happy Traveler RV Park outside Sacramento". one hour in... Wife; "I just tried to lay down and sleep, but I get seasick back there...AND I SPILT MY WINE WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKES!" 90 minutes in... Wife; "How much will we lose in depreciation if we trade this thing in on a Range Rover in Bakersfield?" |

Honestly, my wife is into it. She thinks it'll be an adventure..."and a good exercise in living without so much "stuff".

I would think it would be more fun to drag an enclosed trailer with a race car in it, hit tracks along the way

Go take your buddies RV out for a week or two to one of the local snow bird camping spots and see if you like the RV crowd.
I found a lot of "get off my lawn" bored retired people that constantly organize and clean "their" few square feet on the side of their ride and aren't going anywhere all day, even though often these campgrounds are in the best fishing or hiking territory. Seems to be a lot of retired military, law enforcement and firemen in the mix. :D So NOT for me, even if I was 80 years old. I would want an RV that can go into state campgrounds, boon-dock, etc. but that is too small and out of the question for your wife. It will only work for women with <20 pairs of shoes. :) Again, go for a couple trips and see! G |

My 77 year old parents just got back this fall from a loop trip (3000 miles) around Arizona, NM, Colorado, and Utah with their Airstream club. It lasted for 54 days, and they saw all the interesting spots, and events in that area, and were able to get access to some really neat things for little money.
I'm not into being part of a club with officers, and meetings, but they really enjoy it, and by far are not the oldest in their group. They have been happily married for 59 years, and hope to drive the rig to Alaska next year. I see the way many 77 year old people act, look, and react, and most would say that my parents look to be about 60. I think this keeps them young, but they DO NOT sit around in a retirement park, they get out and go. |

Actully dont go to the locl snow bird spot...I think there is a big difference in the snow bird Palm Springs type crowd and some other types of RVers.. In my RV travels, i have not found that to be the case. Didnt see a bunch of grumpy old folks when we went jeeping and hiking in Moab and Bryce Cyn. Didnt see that at Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon or while camping and river rafting on the Kern river either. Ive also noticed alot more younger folks, 50 and 60s. I'll see if my experience is the same when we get back from our 5 week adventure this summer... |

Good idea to try it out. I had ideas of taking Ms Vega cruising on the sailboat. Turns out, before I could stock up, refit and plan, she doesnt like sailing. I dont mean going to weather in the gulfstrea, but basic day sailing on the bay. Uh... better find out on a simple trip and work up to a longer stay. Sometimes we get annoyed and dont want to deal with things that others dont care about. Genny fires up at night, grey tank full so you have to visit another facility, only PBJ to eat for a day or so...

OK granted, this needs paint and tires, but she could have the entire 2nd story penthouse for the shoes.

When I was 30, married and with a 3 year old child I fulfilled a dream by selling our home, having the garage sale and buying a 35 foot Sailboat (Coronado 35 - amidship helm, sloop) in St. Augustine, FLA and cruising and living aboard for three years. We named her "Rozinante". We traveled up the ICW, over to the Bahamas, across Okeechobee and resettled in St. Augustine. I came across many older retired folks who undertook this great adventure who always remarked, "we wished we could have done this earlier". I even worked for several month while living aboard. I bounced back into my occupation, back on land and back in the grind for the last 40 years! It sucks! My wife and I are thinking hard about doing the Great Loop in a Trawler (34-36) before we get too old.
RV? sailboat or powerboat?, motorcycle or bicycle? GET YOUR BUTTS OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You only go around once my friends and if comes to mind, MAKE IT HAPPEN. We all know the old expressions about getting old and waiting too long to fulfill that dream or take on that adventure. I promise you, you will survive and you will never forget the experience.
