San Ysidro HS Graduation Valedictorian speech, have you heard this?

Nataly Buhr is her name, starts out mundane, gets interesting in the second half. They approved a script she had written. She went off script, but at least none of them thought to turn off her microphone.

Sadly, her experience with school advisors is about average and it gets even worse in college. I experience this in the 70's and had family experiencing the same and worse 2016-2019

No kidding... my senior year in college I was cruising into to my degree, everything looking fine. I still had the printout from freshman year showing which undergrad classes I needed and all were checked off...easy peasy.

Thank GOD my mom encouraged me to check with the engineering dept to confirm the regular guidance counselor had the facts straight, because of course he didn't and I was short 2 under grad requirements.

I asked the guy straight up, which are the easiest classes to pass, I don't have any extra time after my upper division engineering classes, so I took two crap classes just to finish.

Nothing like sitting in an art history class right before an analytical statics lab. The "scenery" in that class was a lot better, as I remember, though

We can all dream that the school is embarrassed enough to fire that counselor, and change things in the office. Hopefully the teacher arrested and led away is not a teacher anymore.

However knowing the strong unions, not one single thing will change. They will continue to have worthless counselors that are never available. And helping a student is not part of the plan for many of the office staff. And they will all demand a pay raise soon.

Hmmm, it is incredibly easy to judge others. Teachers, counsellors, or even student valedictorians. To judge others publicly in front of the entire school will burn a lot of bridges forever and I expect the long term cost of this will be very high. She will probably come to regret her speech.

Better to observe others missteps, forgive their human flaws, and quietly work on our own game methinks.

Our daughter graduated in '88. Kudos to this girl, and bless her for letting me know nothing has changed.

Maybe she's calling out actual problems (discounting the alcoholic teacher that was lead away in cuffs which was clearly a problem) or maybe she's a real pain in the rear and using modern social tactics to attack other people. There's just not much of a way to know. You'd think that a valedictorian would be more trustworthy and likely to be telling the truth, but that's probably not a good assumption to make, especially these days.

Social media, SJW and social shaming these days is, I think, being used in some valid ways, but it's also, I believe, being abused and is often modern McCarthyism.

I'd like to hope that in this case, considering that this was the valedictorian, that this stuff is valid.

I'd be surprised if any of this came back to bite her, but you never know, these days anything is possible.

She had an approved speech she deviated from.

She will learn a hard lesson when she tries that same tactic at work and gets her butt in a crack. She isn't nearly as important as she thinks she is.

You speak your peace to those folks face to face and not with a public shaming.

Seriously, who remembers remarkable graduation speeches.. This will be gone and absorbed into the ether...

I say this with some authority because a friend of mine did a very similar speech in 1979, and he went on to have a very successful career.. He called out almost every officer of the school... the counselors... and specific teachers...

This speech wont hurt this young lady one bit

I'm glad she had the courage to speak her truth. Some employers might want a team of "yes men" and I'm not sure she would want to work with them. She seems to have an entrepreneurial spirit that doesn't fear the power of others, whether they are bosses or school employees.

The opinions run full spectrum on this and time will tell.

It was supposed to be an encouraging speech to her fellow grads. Instead it was: "Poor me I am a victim of ineptitude but I managed to succeed anyways because I am awesome". No way I would hire her. I have had far to many whiny, self-absorbed victim employees over the last 5 years to suit my taste.

Rule #1 in leadership: Praise publicly, reprimand privately. She rated an "F' on this. Hopefully it will be a learning experience for her.

She had no courage. She said here is the speech I am going to give and then didn't give it.

Courage would be saying this is the speech I am going to give and if you don't like it find someone else to give the speech.

Courage would be telling those folks face to face that they let her down. She may have done that and if she did there was no reason to make known how she was let down by certain individuals. Praise those that were assets.

There is a high road and a low road. She chose the low road.

I want to say something positive but people like this really annoy me...

Valedictorian? Not bad considering her complaints.

From the crowd reaction, I'd say her classmates dug the hell out of it.
