When it was the Dixie Chicks, people went elsewhere for their country music.
People fleeing Pelican because Pelican would choose to exercise a free right? Not happening... |

There is of cause two sides to this coin.
On one hand Pelican offer this excellent forum for us to use and its their choice to weed out links to competitors etc as they like. The other side is that Pelican isn't supporting this forum strictly from the kindness of their hearts, it makes good business sense! We should not feel ashamed for using it! |
I find it a bit aggravating that they have a "captive audience" but then their prices are so hi, along with shipping.
it seems like they are getting higher. I don't like to go somewhere else but if I save money buying 5 parts, I may be able to afford buying 6, but still spend the same amount, maybe even more. but the real bonus is they keep my business in the future. |
As stated, this is Pelican's site and they are free to do with it as they please. Personally, I think creating the forums was a stroke of genius by Wayne. Like others, my car is what it is because of what I have gleaned here and the 1000's of $ of Pelican's parts.
It may be that the link is the issue and not mentioning the competitor. I have posted other sources for items in the past and they have not been "censored", most recently for sun visors. My supposition is that most of us buy here unless Pelican does not carry an item or has only very expensive Porsche to offer when an aftermarket will do. |
Thought we were talking about censorship. I have noticed a change lately, BTW.
It used to be you could cheat a little by typing S H ! T. But no more, they have caught on to that. Moderator: I apologize for my off color language, fee free to edit, if you see fit. |
Bottom line, it is indeed a FREE site that you or I pay no dues or fees to maintain. There are TONS of posts everyday. It would take a team of moderators to read every post looking for things like someone promoting a competitor, or urging people to visit another vendor to save two dollars on one part.
It is just way easier to block the name of the other vendors. Less work for for the moderators, and if you don't like it, you are 100% free to post your objection, and take your opinions and leave. When you start to pay for the cost of the site with dues or fees, you might have more rights, but not much more. |
Beyond the fact that Pelican Parts owns these forums it is a simple matter of respect.
What would happen if you walked into McDonalds and started telling customers that Whoppers where better and cheaper? What would happen if you walked into Wal-Mart and started telling shoppers the products were better quality for the same price at target? What would happen if you walked into Duncan Donuts and shared with people in line the wisdom of why Starbucks coffee is better? Most people would NOT approach strangers in real life and do such things. However online we don't feel the pressure of societal norms and we tend to be disrespectful, even if we do not do it on purpose. Most of us here share one common goal, to help other Porsche owners maintain and modify their cars to keep them running and on the road. On rare occasion that means a user may want to share products and services that would compete with Pelican Parts. Some people know how to do so tastefully and others simply can't or won't show Pelican the respect they deserve. The blocking of certain outside domains prevents that to a certain degree. |
I certainly appreciate the forums and believe in being polite to our generous host. PM is probably the most appropriate manner to relay ant information on one of their competitors.

I've got half a mind to cancel my Pelican Parts forum subscription!
Part of that statement is true ;) Seriously, I think we should ***** and **** ****** and **** tell ***** to ****** ** *** ****! :) |
The easy way to get censored on Pelican is by bringing politics to the tech forum. I deleted Dpmulvan's latest post, but the broader discussion of what Pelican does to not promote competitors can continue.

If there are cheaper options of equivalent quality then use them. A website with a forum really doesn’t cost that much to run - the ads alone should cover most of the day to day costs, so don’t think that purchasing stuff is what keeps the lights on. That said, it’s a great example of how to build brand loyalty. |
When Pelican starts cross referencing your post count with your purchase count and restricts your use of the board cause you have not spent enough to justify keeping you as a (free) member then I think you'll have something to complain about.
Till then enjoy the board and be respectful of our host. |

I can’t cuss at work when dealing with customers. This is also an example of not being censored. |
yes a free site, but could you ever come with advertising that brings more business than a this.
this is a great forum but the moderators don't make the forum, the people on here are what makes it great. |
