Cheer or Boo?

I can't decide. It's awesome. It's also terrible.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should, I guess.

The flares are weird .

pwd72s 01-30-2019 03:17 PM

Ingenius! Do I like it? Yes. Could I do it? No. Tip of my hat to the guy!

stomachmonkey 01-30-2019 03:25 PM

Hisssss

Oracle 01-30-2019 03:26 PM

Wow! Full respect for the attention to detail!
If he likes it he's happy and don't care what you or I think...

rusnak 01-30-2019 03:28 PM

Crazy fabrication skills.

drcoastline 01-30-2019 03:31 PM

Oddly interesting, almost Audi TT

PetrolBlueSC 01-30-2019 03:35 PM

"A" for effort. But no.

id10t 01-30-2019 03:38 PM

The ridged metal on the wheel well areas are rather fugly and ruin it for me.

Take those off, and I could almost see it being a future-ized 914 style if the metal for the now gone rear quarter windows were removed.

sc_rufctr 01-30-2019 03:46 PM

Boo

john70t 01-30-2019 03:50 PM

Lot of time and skill involved in that build.
Nicely 'executed' 912 mod.

Hope he gets some quality road time out of it.

(edit: I did say 'executed' 912)

Tervuren 01-30-2019 03:52 PM

Looks like a lot of fun.

Perhaps some day he'll find the time to do his own unique bodywork style on an even greater part of the car.

They call it a redneck build in the article but it's much more involved.

I am very impressed but the purist in me votes boo.

sc_rufctr 01-30-2019 04:05 PM

Great skills and all that but at every level that's just horrible!

And he's built something that's basically unsellable.

Tobra 01-30-2019 04:25 PM

that cannot be unseen, too bad

Dansvan 01-30-2019 04:43 PM

needs better wheels to fill out the wheel wells better. But crazy cool build.

unclebilly 01-30-2019 04:53 PM

Andrew15 built a 914 with a Nissan V6 in it. I drove it at Watkins Glen and Brainerd. It is a fast, well set up race car. He could have just as easily done an LS transplant.

The wheelbase was unchanged and it didn’t ruin the dynamics of the car. I suspect that this mid engine 911 would not handle anything like a 911.

greglepore 01-30-2019 04:53 PM

Cheers. Now go find some Bondo...

rwest 01-30-2019 04:55 PM

Applaud the skill...

scottmandue 01-30-2019 04:57 PM

"Karl Gaskins bought his then-beige Porsche 912 new in 1966, trading off a 1953 Studebaker Starlight Coupe and a split-window Beetle to acquire Porsche’s flat-four special. "

Lets have a moment of silence for this 912.

Yes, mad sheet metal skills (I spent ten years as a tin knocker) but not meant for a 912.

I highly doubt resale value was in his mind.

He has $15K in it according to the article, admittedly bought at different points and $'s are worth different amounts at different times.

When he first cut it up I doubt 912's were worth much, they probably still aren't worth much.

Seems like he enjoyed what he was doing on the side.

Most often projects like this end up unfinished; that is when they are unsellable.

wdfifteen 01-30-2019 05:02 PM

Some things you do just because you can.
I applaud the guy’s skills.

Hiss, boo!

ckissick 01-30-2019 05:05 PM

The "Boo" lady from princess bride was supposed to load, but it didn't.

A930Rocket 01-30-2019 05:48 PM

Fugly, but good on him.

I know I couldn’t do it.

MMiller 01-30-2019 05:54 PM

Just because you can doesn't mean you should...

911boost 01-30-2019 09:12 PM

At first I thought the fenders and wheel arches were fabric, like that weird BMW “show” car. It looked stretched like an old school blimp.....

Bill Douglas 01-31-2019 12:08 AM

It looks a bit like Wayne's 959. Ya know, turbo an' all.

rfuerst911sc 01-31-2019 04:10 AM

Excuse me sir ....... sir ...... please pass the eye bleach !

aschen 01-31-2019 07:01 AM

cool story and build, cant say I like the looks however.

Gaskins’ finished car weighs only around 2,400 lbs, and he says he only spent around $15,000 over the life of the car to get it done.
I doubt both statements.

For less money and time he could have went electric.

Some would boo electric, but at least more of the original car would be left.

Yep, he has some skills, but poor direction.

Mike964_61 01-31-2019 07:39 AM

He says he has 15k in it, but how many hours to make that thing? Time is money also, and it appears tons of hours and years so I would say that equals a lot of money. Interesting exercise, good for him for building whatever the hell he wants and not worry about what others say. With that being said sometimes it is good to have close friends that can talk some reason into you to maybe talk you off the ledge. Either way, not my car or money or time. If he is happy that's all that matters. That's what I say to everyone when they want to do crazy crap to their cars.

javadog 01-31-2019 07:42 AM

It’s hideous.

That guy shouldn’t even be building lawn furniture.

herr_oberst 01-31-2019 08:10 AM

Fabrication and problem solving skills - Off the friggin charts!

Design skills - well, who am I to judge?

javadog 01-31-2019 08:16 AM

His fabrication skills are rudimentary. That's why he ended up with so many bad design details. His inability to fabricate compound curved surfaces yielded the hideous flares and other disasters.

The workmanship on the fenders is great. I like all the breaks. I like it as long as the photos are close-ups. The fenders totally suck on that car, but they’re nice work.

Seahawk 01-31-2019 09:11 AM

When I bought my current 911SC I called Techweenie (sp) to ask him a few questions on my plans; I trust his opinions: He basically said, "enjoy the car, make it what you want it to be...nothing special about the current car."

The car in question in this thread may not be my ideal, but I love the effort: Nothing special about the donor.

Once again, Paul nails it.

It is just a car, and it is his car and time and money. I see many people modify cars to fit their tastes. His taste is not the same as mine by a long shot, but it is his car to do with as he sees fit.

Years ago a company called Gemballa did HORRIBLE things to a 911 for Vanilla Ice. Google it for yourself. It was way worse than the the car of this thread.
