Anyone with a lathe in Phoenix, or recommend a shop?

Need this lug uniform at the button and 1/8 inch shortened on said end.
Should be pretty simple on a mini or normal lathe, but don't want to invest in the tooling for a one piece project. It is hardened steel.

Can anyone recommend a shop, or owns a lathe?



Bonus points if anyone can recognize what it came off of.

How accurate does it have to be? If "not very" you could do that by hand on a grinder.

That thought crossed my mind, but the lug once exposed needs to fit in a new mount.

Is that hardened? May be easier to grind anyway.

Chuck it in a drill and run it against a spinning grinder?

I would do something similar.

Even though I have a lathe and mill, I'd probably clamp an angle grinder to the bed of a drill press, and chuck the part.

It is hardened. I don't think I would trust an angle grinder. Maybe a bench grinder. However, I like the precision of a lathe. It's close to 80 years old and to replace it is close to impossible.

Torch cut parts kit? You rebuilding an MG34 into a semi auto? Pretty cool. Pics when you are done, please.

I'd still use a grinder to square up that end - - either bench grinder or a hand grinder clamped down to a bench or drill press as suggested above. The drill press suggestion is pretty good if you have one. The loads are low when grinding, so a drill press should be more than adequate.

I'm guessing that's the bolt. Thinking this through, I assume you will weld another piece to that end, and then you'll have to smooth your weld. The weld will need to be machined round and the bolt accurately spaced then. You might also be able to do that with a file and lots of patience - - or find a guy with a lathe.

Not the bolt. The the lug for receiver to barrel shroud.

yep torch cut. It's almost impossible to find saw cut kits, or let alone receiver pieces anymore. Even the parts kits on auction don't even have receiver bits.

Semi build. Maybe one of these days I'll drop the 30 grand on a registered one. Or just buy that SAW m249 semi that FN offers now.

Yes, that's what I was thinking too. TNW makes the receiver, and it prolly costs too much to machine the lug as full part of the receiver.
