Warby Parker = boo

Time for new glasses. I decided to try an online eyeglass vendor. Warby Parker. Got the box of five sample frames. Kids loved one pair - that's so dope, you don't look old - so I decided to get them even though the frames seemed kind of cheap. Logged on to enter my prescription and order. WTF. Progressive lenses with photogray -> $395?!

Forget it, I'm going to a regular optician.

Single vision...two sets of lenses for my old fames, one of them sunglasses. Pretty close to $600 at the optician located near my ophthalmologist's office. This after my last exam with a prescription change. A change I'd hoped would improve vision in the left eye...no luck.

I think I've paid about twice that much for just replacement lenses for my Silhouette eyeglasses...blended bifocal, no photo gray at the optician. $395 sounds like a bargain to me. I'm hoping cataract surgery will do away with the need for glasses in a couple of years!

Costco has good deals for lenses if you bring in your own frames

Get ready to pay more in the future, see this article about the merger of Essilor and Luxottica.

Here's an eye popping (no pun intended quote from the article )
"The profit margins within the optical business are a closely guarded secret, but insiders explained to me that while opticians might sell frames for two, or two and a half times, their wholesale price, it is the lenses where they make the most money, charging markups of 700% or 800% to their customers. The largest margins of all are on complex progressive lenses and protective coatings"

There's a place around here called the Southern California college of optometry.
Appointments are free or almost free depending on insurance, the exam is done by licensed optometrists/profressors with the help of senior year optometry students.
I can tell ya I've never had a more thorough or complete eye exam and have never had so much focused individual attention. They do a great job because they are graded on it and everything is under supervision of the prof.

Plus they can fill the prescription and carry a large selection of frames and such and they are cheeeep also.

Last time i got good quality frames, scratch-resistant coating, the anti-glare coating, and IIRC it still cost around $100.

First Time Patients | Ketchum Health

Maybe there's a place like that in other areas? worth checking into.

Vision problems...serious stuff. Later today, I'm going back to the optician, then hopefully a talk with the ophthalmologist. Problem in my left eye...shots in the eyeball for macular degeneration, combined with drops for glaucoma high pressure. Fine..I'm going blind in the left eye, guess I have to accept that. My eyesight deteriorating, guess I have to accept that as well.

But I want to know why my new pre$cription lenses don't give me better left eye vision than a pair of old prescription glasses I have...

Hoping I get some answers...if not, I'll arrive at the obvious conclusion that it's not about helping me see better, it's about making my wallet lighter.

They used to be across the street from cal state Fullerton but recently moved to Yorba Linda.
That reminds me, I'm overdue for an appointment myself.

Finally clicked on this...a long read, but VERY informative. Many thanks!

To be clear, I'm not saying $395 is too much - but for that price, I want the services of an real live optician in person, and higher-quality frames, not some discount Internet glasses.

Right now I'm wearing $19 readers from CVS.
I really should make a appointment.

When they tell you to drop your pants and bend over the table you know you’re getting a thorough eye exam.

I think I'll stick to the CVS reading glasses then.
