What did you play on your Walkman

The Walkman thread had me thinking about what I played on my Walkman.

I was a New Wave aficionado. So the tapes I carried in my backpack in high school were:

B-52s (Red Album and Wild Planet)

The GoGos

Thomas Dolby

Blondie

Police

Devo

I'm a bit younger and had a Discman.

I listened to:

Nine Inch Nails
Smashing Pumpkins
Pink Floyd
The Grateful Dead

Illusion.

Peppy music for when jogging. Boston and INXS I remember. Mostly mix tapes I made. Also an obscure band called the Feelies.

Check out about 1:30 in for Feelies. Mostly for longer runs. A little trance like.

I remember Just like Heaven but not the title or the band. All I remembered was "Tell me, tell me, tell me" Searched on that for a couple of years then finally found it was "Show me, show me, show me." :)

So much Master of Puppets...

Anthrax, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Suicidal Tendencies, Testament, Exodus...

Ministry, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Pigface...

T.S.O.L., Circle Jerks, DRI, Gorilla Biscuits...

Been through probably 5 tapes of Violent Femmes, everyone always had at leave one copy of that album around them at all times.

And the Beach Boys. Sometimes Jan and Dean. I'm a sucker for surf rock.

Actually, I usually had some sort of mix tape playing, something that I spent 5 or 6 hours carefully putting together...

I still have most of my tapes and probably half of my CDs laying around.

berettafan 02-11-2019 11:22 AM

zep, beach boys, beastie boys, bon jovi, motley crue,

I never had a walkman, but I can remember like yesterday, the kid 2 seats in front of me on the school bus, rocking license to ill , every morning .
I used discmans later, as a way to listen to cd's in old cars with tape decks .

1987- brand new Kawasaki Ninja 750, brand new Walkman with Def Leppard’s just-released “Hysteria” cassette. Every time I hear a track off that (usually on Sirius XM these days) I am transported back to twisting that throttle and laughing behind my helmet.

Sooner or later 02-11-2019 04:03 PM

Never had a Walkman.

I did have a pre Walkman. It was a portable 8 track that used 8 D cells. About the size of a briefcase.

Steppenwolf, Grassroots, and the Beatles were my first 3 tapes.

SCadaddle 02-11-2019 04:06 PM

The Who
Live at Leeds
Magic Bus....the really loud part turned up full blast....

While getting the other pair of wisdom teeth pulled out of my head that the dentist left in my head from the week before when I had NO Walkman with me.

It didn't work.:D

Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Jimi Hendrix - Smash hits
The Cars - The Cars
Black Sabbath - Greatest hits
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Pat Benetar - In the heat of the night
The Rolling Stones - Rewind
Wings - Greatest Hits
Bob Dylan - Live at Budokan
Elton John - Greatest hits
Tom Petty - Damn the torpedoes
Cream - Strange brew best of
Deep Purple - Deepest Purple best of
Guess Who - best of
Billy Idol - Rebel Yell

I was given a Bolla wine gift box (without the wine). It was perfect for my cassettes.

I was mowing laws the summer I got a Walkman. My go-to cassette was Motley Crue's Too Fast For Love, which is still in heavy rotation on my iPhone now. Always lots of VH, Iron Maiden and Loudness too, both then and now.

ckissick 02-12-2019 04:39 PM

Mostly Grateful Dead bootlegs. But I always put on Yes's Going for the One album while skiing at Sugar Bowl. Good times.

Mike Andrew 02-13-2019 05:24 AM

Pretty much only used mine when skiing and had several mix tapes of azz kicking R &R as well as the usual '60's fare - Doors, Stones, Cream, Tull, et'c. A few mellow tapes just in case. Fanny pack or backpack with tapes. Next to last Walkman died at Alta with a full frontal plant with it in my chest pocket. BIG chest bruise and lots of parts and shards.
Still use my ipod and quickly appreciated more music in a much smaller package without hauling tapes. Plus better sound. Many more mellow cruising tunes these days.
