La Jolla is like saying the Hamptons are representative of Long Island.
San Diego turns into a gritty city very quickly, and La Jolla is hardly representative of anything.

I spent a month at mission beach visiting a high school friend that went to SDSU. Good times with a house on the beach.

That house from Top Gun is close to the water and the pier in Oceanside now. Not restored, just sitting there. I think it will be part of a new hotel complex.

Every time we end up in SD we eat like 3 meals at the Asian restaurants near Convoy and Balboa. Super popular little area with lots of varieties. They have a Taiwanese shaved ice place there that Thuy loves. Like, she would drive to SD just to go there. 🤣🤣🤣

If you are in the (sort of) down town area and want a Mexican meal, try Las Cuatro Milpas on Logan Ave. I haven't been there in a long time, but it's as close to a local, typical place as you'll encounter in Mexico. Since you're an engineer, maybe you'd like the Aerospace Museum. They have a Mig-15 there along with lots of other great history. If you want to go slightly north, you might enjoy the glider port by the Salk Institute where they fly hang gliders and other stuff off the cliffs on a daily basis. If you have time and want a nice walk, go up to Torrey Pines State Beach, walk up to the museum (they used to do hill climbs on that road) and out to the beach cliffs, down to the beach, and back to the parking area. I'd come down to have a beer with you but I avoid the crowded, down town area like the plague.

Pfzzzt! My fat ass blows out the crotch of my pants. @#$&#$&$*&,,!!!!

I ask her, “ excuse me, where is the mall?” ( she actually said - maybe no one will notice)

I find the mall, and ask some cutie if she knew where BR is. “Oh yes!, you are shopping?” I explain my wardrobe malfunction; she stares uncomfortably at my crotch, grins and tells me, “ follow me”

She walked me to the store! I shake her hand, thank her and bought new pants. The salesman watches us and runs and gets me pants. People are NICE here.
Great story! What a tribute to the kind people of San Diego ...... wait - you were wearing a bow tie? Lucky you didn't come across a herd of first graders on their way home from school. They probably would have knocked you down and beaten your ass for being a nerd. San Diego is a nice place, but there is only so much even nice people can tolerate.
Visit the zoo.

Seriously... second page before someone mentions Balboa park? SLACKERS!
World class zoo, several museums, beautiful park, outdoor pipe organ, etc.

Can't figure out what you are responding to, who said that La Jolla is representative of the rest of SD?

It's the nicest part of San Diego. It's also the only part I've ever spent time in, w a couple of small exceptions. Since it's also the northernmost part, I've never passed through the rest of the place in countless trips down from Los Angeles over the last 35 years, (not much in last couple decades), to hang w family. We used to go out to dinner in Pacific Beach sometimes but riding there in a car in the dark, I could not tell you much about it.

La Jolla and Torrey Pines, Scripps and UCSD are all in the north end and beautiful. I spent a couple nights in DT San Diego at a hotel maybe 10 years ago on a business trip but did not get much of a feel for the place. Off in a car all day away from city. Coronado Island is supposed to be really nice, my sisters stayed at the hotel once w my dad for some conference and really enjoyed it.

I remember when you could drive from LA to SD and there would be a big barren part of the coast between OC and SD. It has shrunken to nothing w the exception of San Onofre and Camp Pendelton.

It’s whale migration season. Might be fun to get out on a whale watching cruise.

With those exceptions we have the longest city in the world stretching from Sunland to San Diego.
It has been stated that 40 % of the US population lives in proximity to the coast. In CA it's closer to 60%. Give it time and and there won't be an unoccupied area of build-able land from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border.

I live less than a mile from the 405 fwy and I cross it almost daily and get on it almost never. Parking lot all morning and all late afternoon to past 6pm.

Good place to read a book.

The Park's Automotive Museum is currently running an exhibit through June 1st called "Icons: Cars that Drove Our Imagination". It looks kind of interesting.

Too bad the city forced Anthony's out. Good little joint on the water by the Star of India.

Lots of good museums in Balboa. Scripps Aquarium up the coast a bit as well.
