Rincon Puerto Rico

Heading there in March. Other than surfing, snorkeling and drinking rum, what else should I do? 😎

if you enjoy a cigar and meeting locals, the cigar house in old san juan is a must. eating some great food should also be part of the plan. as far as lodging, consider the Vanderbilt condado. that is where I stay. hotel built in 1919 with all the period char and luxury you could wish for. have fun.

If you get to Viejo San Juan visit the fort San Cristobol. You can almost hear the bugle calls and men running to their posts. A visit to El Radar in Arecibo is cool too.

As a world traveler to many third world countries for surf get some local knowledge before you head over. If you cant find local info hit up a surf shop as soon as you land.

Been a few years since I surfed PR but as I recall there are places that you do want to avoid as a gringo. No different than parts of Los Angeles. So be smart, remember crime and cops are very different in PR.

Have fun.

Get out of the city.

Yes, technically you are correct.

We surfers tend to see the country side not the cities.

Away from San Juan PR it is third world.

Look at income, infrastructure, crime, education, healthcare.

Recent events showed just how third world PR is.

Fact;

Economic depression PR
Between 2007 and 2017 Puerto Rico’s gross national product (GNP) declined by 14 percent, and in 2015, 46 percent of the population lived below the federal poverty line, compared to the U.S. national average of 15 percent. [19]

Thank you.

I believe most people understand my point.

Leave the tourist area and you will see much of what many call third world living conditions.

Your are, by world standards correct. PR is not third world thanks to US taxpayers funding this corrupt territory.

NATO aligned =s 1st World
Soviet Bloc aligned =‘s 2nd World
Unaligned =‘s 3rd World

Median income ~$1,000 =‘s 3rd
Puerto Rico median income ~$23,000

Plus, you know it’s part of the US right?

To call it 3rd world would be like saying Arkansas and Mississippi are 3rd world which might be a valid argument.

NOTE: I am not disparaging Arkansas or Mississippi. Just the first two states that popped into my head.

There are some good surf spots where Reme Airforce base used to be, down below the old officers club is one.

I haven't been there in years, but most folks there are cool. I lived in Mayaguez for a couple of years when a kid. A smile and a little Spanish opens things up nicely.

They have some really good local music there. Beach clubs in less crowed areas can be fun for music and local contact.

Cheers Richard

Too right Flatbut!
Great food, I love PR chicken with rice and beans.
Oh and plantain chips.
Worth exploring the food choices for sure!

Cheers Richard

PR people would like to thank you for your support of its BK territory and its corrupt system we Americans pay for.

Thank you. Please send more money.

Cool pic. Maybe I try and recreate in 2019?

Thanks for all the info. I said surfing, because looks like what Rincon is know for. I am a snowboarder, but that's frozen water. We will be traveling with a couple families with teenage girls.

I hope it goes well, because I'm the driving force against not going to Mexico. Just need warm weather, beach and relatively 'safe'.

I spent a month at Roosevelt Roads on an extended missile test in 1990...I really liked El Yunque rain forest. It may be too far for you, but it is doable:

Great day of hiking.
