I was dismayed to come back after going on my construction project crusade, and find no more Wayne. In fact, I am still not happy about that.

Still checking in regularly to see what you crazy ´mericans are up too. SmileWavy

Been here since around 2002. Realized a few years later that it was stupid to use my real full name as my account name, so changed it in 06. Used to keep chocolate candies in my office fridge for when my kids came home from school. Was chowing down with my then 10 year old daughter while trying to think of a new handle. She’s 22 now.
Have seen many come and go. As already said, with 911 prices where they are, few newcomers can afford it like we did. A shame. I sold my 87 Targa last year for stupid money. With retirement a few years off and 3 kids in college, it made sense. Picked up a 2010 Miata with a PRHT and 6 speed. The car was cheap, reliable and fun as hell to drive. Would rather spend money on motorcycles. Looking for a nice /2 currently. I bounce back and forth between OT and PARF. Both are fun for different reasons. If you don’t take PARF too seriously, and realize we’re all friends, the sparring takes on an enjoyable vibe. Pelican and ADV are my go-to’s. Even though I no longer own a Porsche and no longer ride off road. Pelican has become a great “life” resource for many. I’ve learned more from you guys than I can even recall. Honored to be part of the club. |
I am on every day, and a newbie still... I like seeing the projects, and photos, buying/selling parts. Its a lot of fun!!! But, when I search for solutions to my Porsche questions and mull over years of posts and can't find information, and then when I do ask for help..... I get very little response.
I think you guys have a lot knowledge, I like it when you share it |
I haven’t been on here as long or as much as many of you guys/girls, but I feel like we have a similar perspective on the “world” through our automobile type.
I know that there are forums for just about everything ever, but I would still rather get my questions answered or information on watches, food, dogs, cats, lawnmowers, stereo equipment etc., on here as I feel like the people giving out the information would be in to whatever it is in the same fashion that I would be. Don’t care for PARF- try to keep myself “shielded” from voluntary reading/seeing negative stuff. |
I was prolific on the 911 board until all the questions that could be though of were ... and answered. That was in the days of Grady Clay and Early S Man. Plus many other very knowledgeable folks. Too many to name, actually.
Then I came over here during the Great Recession as I had nothing to do. Couldn't get a job in the home improvement market to save my life for at least 2 years. I echo everything positive said previously and better than I could have said it. I've gotten my tail in a wad a few times, but that's the norm for me. 99% good people here. |

I came for the tech forum and stayed for the OT forum (at least a few times a week). I don't post a ton but I'm always interested in what everyone is up to.

The cars are long gone but I'm still here. The Miata and bike boards are OK but this is my hangout.

[QUOTE=onewhippedpuppy;10374942]I’d really like to see Pelican make a big push with the water cooled cars. That’s the future of Porsche enthusiast owners. Most of the air cooled cars are now in collections being lightly dusted on a weekly basis, not really the target customers for a DIY forum. Right now Rennlist owns the market for the newer cars, but Rennlist sorta sucks.
Plus one on this^^^ As an owner of a 997.2 I'm at the point where it might be fun to do a few slight mods. |
Interesting how many of us have sold our P cars. (What, Paul sold his Porsche? )
I found this site while looking for parts and how to information for a '69 E. then found OT. I am checking things out here several times each week because of the amazing breadth of knowledge and experience combined with a sense of community and compassion. The old E was passed on to another enthusiast after eleven years of stewardship. A first year Miata was my toy until last fall. Now I find myself checking out the Mercedes technical board, as I seem to be appreciating comfort more than I used to. Life goes on. Best Les |
I've started a few threads that people still remember about me when I meet them.
- The 911 Forum's Random 911 thread has nearly 3.5 million views. Long Hood Friday is/was a big hit. - PPOT's Random Transportation thread has almost 7 million views. - I also have posted 2,400 photos in the 935 thread. That thread has lead to several of my 935 shots which I took back in the day being included in a 935 book. That thread has to contain more 935 info than any single place on the web. A few years I was Daytona for a HSR race and was shooting pictures from the bed of truck over the fence. There was a guy trying to shoot through the fence and told him he could come up in the truck with me. I was wearing a "URY914" hat I had made and he said, "Are you URY914 from Pelican Parts?" I'm a legend in my own mind. ;) I like it here. A bunch of guys talking about cars and life or life and cars. We should set up a Plan B if this place disappears one day. We need to know where to all meet up if the **** hits the fan. Like a safe house. Any suggestions? It's not over yet but thank you all for a great ride. Keep on posting.... |
I've thought about that also Paul. I like it here. I would really miss this place if it was no longer around . Ive enjoyed growing old with you guys over the years.
I sort of feel like it is winding down. All that needs to happen is for it to be bought or sold one more time, and who knows ? |

What turns me off on this forum are the pissing contests, the PARFY stuff which leaks out, conspiracy theory crap and character assasinations. Some do deserve to be assasinated, but I have handled them by blocking their posts. What I do enjoy is how people pull together to solve issues, sympathy when a loved one or pet is lost, the humor and picture threads and general sillyness. And I agree the numbers are dwindling and my theory is that a newby that encounters my ‘turn off’ list may just be turned off. |

I was you almost two decades ago....post a question here if you wish....many won't see it in PARF either ;) Is Loren still ranting about chips :)? |
Have to agree that since the Search function went to hell, it would be very frustrating as a newcomer. There needs to be stickies on all the forums on alternative methods to search or just fix the d@m thing. Add that to the general response of ‘This has been covered several times, use Search,’ and I can see how people are discouraged.
One thing that is abundantly clear is that we have an older group here with older values. My son and his wife and their friends in their 30s don’t put up with sexist comments, racism, ethnic hate, etc which is found here all too often. If people take the stance, it’s our forum and if they don’t like it, they can go elsewhere, that’s exactly what will happen and these forums will die with us. There is nothing wrong with being decent. |
I log in most every day. Since I own my own business, and work for home I don't have a boss looking over my shoulder. I get a process running on the computer and it can take minutes or hours or days to finish. I play on Pelican while I wait for the system to catch up.
I check into the technical site occasionally. Mostly the Stijn and random pics threads are hit regularly. My post count is nuts, but the vast majority of it is in those two threads. With a lot in the jokes thread. I would miss Pelican a lot if it collapsed. |
i have two computers on my desk..i call my second machine, my "burner computer".
i check in often. i do admit, i am constantly shocked by the some of the responses..collectively, we have become "know it alls". even some sad death thread will generate a one of the following: 1. Darwin at work 2. good riddance 3... that recent Survey measurement question..totally harmless, but EVEN that one generated a "what a dumb question!" response. it's getting old. i'm getting old. old enough to know that i dont always have to prove i'm right. not that i'm right all the time. |
Over the years I've lurked here a lot and rarely post, ([/green font]) but it's easy to see who's here at any given.
Right now, we have: Quote:

I used to only post in the tech area...and continually posted help with repairs...but it got so that each person took many, many hours of help as they really knew nothing about the cars...or anything mechanical whatsoever...and had not availed themselves of the vast internet resources or the search engine. Worse yet, many asked for help and then insulted your response or ignored it.
For a while, there were a lot of flippers who bought these cars and simply wanted you to fix them for them online so they could quickly sell them. Since I had posted on pretty much every repair that I could think of 15 years ago...I figured folks could just use the search function. Nothing has changed regarding how the 70s and 80s cars worked or how to repair them. Locking PARF out from nonmembers/search served to keep a lot of new folks from coming here via a search...and staying. |

I don't see most of desktop fields anymore....even yer one damn stars Sammy, but I used too... The SQL queries on thread post ho's was always a hoot too....sorta like fint :) |
Sample letter:
"As of xx/xx/xxxx, the pelican forums will end. On behalf of the pelican staff, we thank you for your patronage. , NOW...get off our lawn!!!!!." |
Still here, never posted all that much, but always lurked. Sold my 911 ages ago and 356 or e28 content is minimal. Almost left for good before PARF was split off... All the racist, xenophobic crap was too much.
OT is decent and I like the wide breadth of knowledge, support and advice. Still some PARF leaks through, but I just ignore certain posters. I'd say the reason PP will die slowly is the antiquated BBS design and lack of a decent mobile experience. This applies to both parts and forums. |
I work from home two weeks a month, more or less, depending on the Gregorian Calendar on Crack that governs the Department of Defense.
I own 40% of the the company so my time is my own: I generally work for 20 minutes, surf for 5, lather, rinse, repeat. Long engineering meetings will skew my post count upward. I enjoy it here and I am not going anywhere. Sorry. |
I really like all you guys.
Long time lurker, sometimes “poster” myself. Seems like every time I chime in, the thread stops. Let’s see if it happens here, too. I have learned lots and thoroughly enjoyed this forum. Nice to see folks that are able to get along. Ciao! |
I'd also say that my community needs are pretty different from the newbie 28 year old I was when I started, to the cantankerous venerable 44 I am now.

If you want to surf Pelican or other forums from a phone, just used Tapatalk. It does pretty good at replicating the desktop version on a computer.
