I've been here and left a few times now.

Read almost daily, but seldom post.

I always feel like a new guy here. Seemed like I joined an already tight community back in 2005 (wow!). Didn't help that I'm a few decades younger than most of you - I still am! Funny how that gap always stays constant :rolleyes: It still amazes me how much experience and knowledge is here, from all walks of life, on just about any topic imaginable. My interpretation is that, most of us ended up here as a Porsche owner, and that means you're either good at what you do and have done well in life, or worked bloody hard to get yourself there (I'm definitely in the latter group). Either way, that means you have interesting stories to tell. I do enjoy learning from all you old timers' life experiences!

I spent an unhealthy amount of time on the tech forum all the while I was "studying" in university. I probably could have studied a bit harder and done a bit better, but considering where I am now, I can't really complain! Pelican is where I first met Jeff Alton, who got me my first job in motorsport. So I should thank him and Pelican really, or should I say, I forgive you ;) Funnily enough, it was also here where I met Captain and he gave me some good advice on my latest career move. Not sure where I'll go next but so far it's a nice bookend kind of situation.

I don't go on the tech forum at all anymore. It's not very useful when my car is 7500km away (according to Google) and for the most part, It's "fixed" now. I see occasionally my turn signal switch quick fix thread gets bumped back to the front pages, I'm just happy I could contribute something, anything at all!

I never had much personal connection with other members here. But this place feels safe and comfortable in a strange way. I'm not sure people outside of this forum would understand. I feel like I could ask vash-esque questions or deep, meaning-of-life stuff without any judgement, and get (mostly) straight answers. A mix of anonymity and camaraderie, I suppose. I miss people like Warren, Grady, Ron and so on. They gave so much here and expected so little in return - a good way to live life, I think. Just knowing that people of that calibre were around, was a nice feeling, especially when you're lying under your car at 2AM trying to fix something new. I wonder what happened to the Pelican Wiki project? All the technical knowledge here is surely worth preserving in a proper way.

I think JWW is still around? And Milt is back (SmileWavy). Dr Webb and other PNW "characters" are mostly still around too, I think. For sure this place has changed. But as long as I can come here to look at some random and transportation pictures, I'm happy. Sorry for rambling on. Think of this as my ode to Pelican.

They all died or are in nursing homes for dementia...

Then there are the ones who went to prison, are locked up in mental institutions..some of whom seem to have access to the internets..are on the run from prosecution... or have been elected to office...

love this place . completely transformed my porsche ownership experience,...otherwise, it would be sitting in garage waiting for that summer drive to the beach ...( now ... my original 88 is sitting under a tarp outside garage, stripped to the bone, wanting some love!!) made me a confident mechanic and a racer.... great group of extremely helpful and honorable people...i am extremely thankful to all of you. ....jmho... f

I have been here for a pretty long time, think since 2001/2 time frame when I bought my first 911, an 86 911 cab. I can honestly say that Grady Clay has hung out in my garage and shared a beer back with we used to do Pelican get togethers. I was at the first few Cars and Coffee in Northern Colorado before they got huge.

I left the marque for a while with a 2004 WRX, but came back in 2007 with a 911 turbo. My current 996TT is a fun driver.

Like Choc, I used to post under my name but due to changing work circumstances I had my id changed this year.

I also visit the turbo forum on Rennlist and the Samba for my VW.

This is the only OT Forum I visit and still really enjoy it.

The DIY and mod crowd tends towards cheaper cars and youth prior to marriage and family. Just like the typical Pelican probably did in the 70s and 80s and 90s.

If you want to remain in an active DIY and modding culture, there are many active communities that cater to cheaper cars, BMW, Miata, VW, GM, Subaru, etc. Basically, anything BUT Porsche.

I cruise by several times each week, but don't hang out here like I used to.

I'm on here nightly with the tv on in the background. I'll check out the 911 tech forum and offer advice even though I sold my 911 4 years ago. I learned a lot from other members when I needed advice, so I still like to offer advice.

Like most of you I originally came here for the Porsche tech boards and drifted to OT. I got a lot of help on the 911 board - saved my butt a few times. OT is a vast resource for information of all kinds. I like reading about projects you all are working on and reading about how you solve various problems. I’ve asked dozens of questions here and always got good advice. I get jumped on for something I posted just enough to keep it interesting, but not enough to send me away. I can tell from consistent responses that there are some people here who just don’t like me - just as in life out here in the wet world. I would really miss PPOT if it ever went away.

I mean... I've only been hanging out here for 19 years. :eek:

Like most I got my start in tech, but stayed in OT. 16 years later I'm still hanging around. I'm also not big on the book of faces, this is my social media. Personally I think the average IQ is about 10x that which is found on Facebook, so that helps. I consider this to be my focus group, because there is always someone(s) that has a perspective on everything. Pretty incredible knowledge base here. I've found help with more issues than I could count, gotten advice during hard times like being laid off, and made a lot of good friends outside of the computer. I've participated in a LOT of different forums over the years, but this one will always be home.

I really hope that someone from the new ownership monitors these forums, because I think there is some real gold in this thread. From a business perspective, Pelican is built on the basis of DIY repair and upgrades. For decades this website has been the go to for air-cooled Porsche repair/maintenance/upgrades, both parts and advice, but that is shifting due to the expense of the older cars. Contrary to popular belief the newer stuff is possible to DIY, but these products have largely been neglected by Pelican. The enthusiast with the $10k Boxster can't come here for an active forum, a wealth of DIY articles, or a concerted focus on water cooled Porsche parts. That is the future of the Porsche brand from a DIY enthusiast standpoint, it's (sadly) not a 911 Carrera. People gravitated to the air cooled cars because they were fun, robust, easy to repair, and cheap, you can apply those exact same characteristics to water pumpers.

I have come here almost daily since 2001. It's my goto website for technical 911 stuff absolutely. This site has allowed me to take on almost any 911 project and get thru it successfully and confidently. I find there is a surprising amount of cool subjects and great talent and knowledge in these here pages. PARF is interesting to say the least and I must admit a requirement to peek in on daily as well. More a lurker, I do try to contribute when I can. This is a pretty darn good neighborhood and always enjoy my visits.

I’ve been a member for 12 years. I joined AFTER I purchased my 83SC, AFTER reading Wayne’s book. I do not have a high post count because I’m always learning and I’m not at the point of “teaching” yet, if ever. I used to be more active, but I’m busy with the ending of my 35 year career, wraping it up. I’ll be more active soon. Thanks to all who have been helpful, some have not been pithy at all. I’ve thanked the former, told the latter as much.

My last trip to Luftgekuhlt restored my hope - that place was crawling with 30 and 40 year olds!

I came here in 2003 when I was swapping the 3.2 into my car and needed some help with wiring. Still have the car, but like so many, it doesn't get driven much due to other time constraints.

I started off on the porschephiles mailing list in 1993 or 1994 when there was a total of about 250 people on it worldwide (and it was all Porsches - not just 911s). When that died and rennlist started up, I drifted away from the online community when I didn't like the way rennlist was running things.

Came to pelican for the wiring question and 16 years later, I'm still here. :)

I’d say more than half of our local Cars and Coffee crowd is between 20 and 40. But they aren’t driving $50k+ air cooled 911s either.

I've been on here, mostly just enjoying the conversations and contributing when I can since 2004. I added a Triumph TR6 to our garage 2 years ago because it's relatively inexpensive and a lot of fun to mess with and also a fun ride (no 911 of course, but still a lot of fun). It's not likely to go through the roof in value in my lifetime, so I can drive it all I want and not worry about the miles. Another upside to the TR6 is a large, supportive community and lots of sources of parts and advice. $20,000. will get you a really good one.

Still check in every now and then. Spend much of my internet time now watching youtube projects/builds in hopes it will motivate me to finish some of my projects that I am getting too old and lazy to finish.

I started on the Rennlist email list back in 1999. I think I was there for a year or two before I swapped to Pelican Parts and I've been here since. I did spend some time in the middle on miata.net forums and then a short time on a miata forum that specialized in the turbo miatas, but even with that, I never left PP. I started on the 911 tech board here. I've been mostly exclusive to PPOT for the past 14-15 years now though. It is interesting to see the changes here over time.

I knew nothing bout cars, bought a 73S with more issues then I have myself.
And was in over my head but didnt't even realize it.

If I read back my first posts about the then new to me car
I think to myself, "you dumbass."

I visit every day because I have time. But more importantly, I love the conversation of all on here. I don't own a Pcar now, but when I did I found such great help from all. The random pics site is funny for my wife and I. It's just a place where I have many friends I never had before.

I still drop in to meet single wimmins :)

I’ve been on here a while but don’t post much. Guess I’m more of a lurker. Last year I moved to central Texas from outside of LA, CA. Got a new home with 45 acres, brought all of my vehicles including both Porsche’s. Haven’t been on much with move and doing “chores” here. I’m going to try to lurk again SmileWavy

I'm still here after 19 years. Started on the 911 tech forum when I had my 911SC. After selling it I started hanging here in OT. I hang on Rennlist now for the technical braintrust on my water pumper GT3. I agree with above comments that it's unfortunate that Pelican missed the boat on the water pumper forum crowd. I despise Rennlist's interface but that's where the water pumper community and knowledge base is.

I also will echo above comments...I learn so much from you guys here. I post a fraction as much as I read. There are some amazing people here on the forum.

Found this place back then looking for answers on repairing my then 911. The 911 is gone and I keep looking for the next right 911 but haven't pulled the trigger.

I don't post much but usually read and listen. I have enjoyed this site for yrs and hopefully for yrs in the future.

It's been a while, but I still come in and check in on things and see who of the long-timers are still around. Great group of folks.

Newbie here, but IMO Wayne embodies the American dream and spirit.
He stuck his neck out and risked everything. He worked hard and eventually reaped the rewards for all he sacrificed.
He earned and deserves all the good things that have come to him.
This world could use a lot more Waynes.
