More Ram 1500 Drama

I'm starting to feel like AZ Porsche Kid now. I' was finally able to spend some time looking into the leaky gas tank on my Ram today. I got the fuel filler hose off and snapped a pic of the flange on the gas tank. Does this look fix-able? It looks like the leak is coming from the base of the plastic flange that threads into the tank. I can't really afford to replace it.

Did you check with a Dodge dealer to see if there's a recall or campaign on this issue?

I had it at a dealership a few months ago. Alas, there was only an open recall for the passenger airbag (Takata brand).

Is there a MOPAR schematic showing the tank separate from the flange? If so, showing them as 2 parts (3 if there is a seal) suggests that it would be repairable. Getting the flange out of the tank might be a big hassle.

If the flange can be removed without breaking it then I would try Hylomar sealant.

So it looks like I can't just replace the plastic piece from new. I'm not seeing it as a separate part I can order. But, Rock Auto has replacement tanks for $288 - $789. Weird, their tanks are plastic whereas mine is metal.

Last night with the fuel filler hose off I cleaned the area as best I could and applied 3M bond around the flange. It's had almost 24 hours to cure so I'll take another look at it this afternoon when I get home and see if I need to apply more. Then the ultimate test... filling it

Checking this morning, the 3M sealant was still tacky. I only put ¼ tank full of gas in to let it dry some more. Tonight I'll fill it up and see if it's still leaking. If so, I'll likely have to drop the tank and look at removing the filler flange and apply some hylomar as suggested.

Probably a dumb idea but can you adapt something like this ? I have something similar on my fuel cell.

Plastic weld it, get the torch!

The plastic tanks are prolly newer, so they cross reference to the older models? I'm not sure if you can talk to the parts department at the local RAM dealer to get some part numbers.... But it looks like that is a one piece with the tank.

788$ for oem replacement.... Look for an aftermarket, maybe dorman...? I would even run a transfer tank before dropping that amount of coin on an oem tank...

Well last night it failed the test. After getting home from putting in gas, it was still leaking. I'll have to drain some fuel out this weekend and drop the tank and see if I can do a better job of sealing it while looking for a replacement.

Ps: I am really hoping the company I work for picks up a CDJR store soon. I am liking the idea of getting a Ram at cost. I just have to make this thing reliable enough to last another few years... Suspension, bushings, wheel bearings, brakes... Oy the list never ends.

Do research on an aftermarket tank first. When I converted my El Camino to fuel injection I wanted the pump down in the tank like OEM of the era. The aftermarket tanks were made in Canada. The vent tube was not designed right. It would take 20 minutes to fill the tank while bent over. I had to drop the tank, and empty it. I let my 911 idle and used the exhaust to dry the tank with heat and carbon monoxide. The I welded in an additional vent tube next to the filler neck. Then put it back non the car. Now I can fill up like normal.
Total pain in the butt to do to fix a bad design.

Oh boy a new RAM... Let the licking begin!

You'll prolly be fine with the gas trucks, and even the gas trucks could be had at low 20's with 4x4 and crew cab. At cost would be a very tempting offer, but I needed a diesel. The new gas RAM's have a lifter failure that takes out the cam. Not sure if they fixed it yet by 2019, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

I really do not like the new design of not using a gas cap, but you're supposed to change your fuel filter every 15,000 miles anyways so we don't need one to keep the crud out...

I would dare suggest a used tank from ePay or car-parts if you don't fix your current one. Even a new tank is still cheaper then a truck payment.
