My brothers hangar. My little one man band, a couple of good friends help here and there.
I managed to get the tip laced, coated and taped this morning... hopefully I'll get it through silver tomorrow. I replaced my 80K grain water softener with this new 64K grain system yesterday. It went smoothly, since I anticipated the plumbing changes I had to make and bought everything I needed before hand. The valve on my old system was getting sketchy after 16 years, although I could get it to soften the water OK. With just the two of us in the household, even the 64K grain system is a bit over kill. Got my septic tankj serviced last week. Things that have to be done when you live in the country. I have to admit, I don't find things everly easy in my later years.

Still a lot of work to do including rebuilding the lower door panels that were rotten. Big days yesterday and today, lots of work.... got one of the dope repair wings finish painted and some prep for the new wing build tables.... 16' long. Today welding the pallet rack ends to their new configuration the tables will be 32" tall. It will enable cradle fixtures to hold wing skins for an accurate, true build. We pulled the stallion out of the trailer and set it all back on its gear, it'll be much easier to move about the shop this way.
The stallion is a unicorn plane for me... in the parlance of gone in 60 seconds, it's my Eleanor. An amazing airframe designed and engineered by Martin Hollman.... he did extensive FEA when he created it in the 90's. He was the engineer behind the Lance Neibauer series of aircraft during the 80' and 90's, the series everyone knows as the lancair. This particular bird shares a wing with the lancair es. As built with the original continental engine it's a solid 200 to 220 kt airplane at 14000'. Our goal is to put a tio540 on it... that should get us to 17k ft and solid 250mph ground speeds. The guys in the back seat are a couple good friends, that's the furthest rear seat ( it seats six) it actually has more space side to side than a 170..... and that's the back seat. Martin was 6'6" it's even wider across the front seats.lots of head space. It has a massive useful load with a full wet wing... if you want it, 180 gallons. It'll fly 2500 miles non stop. Way longer leggs than my bladder. I plan to build a sit down liquid relief station into the aft seat with a tube out the tail. 2500 miles. I might never fly on an airline again, at least in the US if I had the skillset to keep something like that airworthy..... and with the backseat Jonny, well, hell, that and a sack lunch and that's as luxurious as anything from Spirit Air anyway!!

When we got the Santa Fe for my son, it had a cracked piece of black trim on the front bumper cover. I told him we would replace it with one from Pull-a-Part when we found a good one. Well, we finally found one. It is from the same vehicle that we got the WeatherTech floor mats from (see Craigslist finds). Last weekend, we removed the front bumper cover, removed the cracked trim piece, and removed the grill. I masked off the chrome edge of the grill as well as the Hyundai badge, sanded all the flaking black paint off, cleaned it all up with rubbing alcohol and then spray painted it satin black.
Today, we put it all back together. My early 1960s Wilton vice only has 4 inch wide jaws. I’m fabbing up something to make it 6 inches wide. So far, I’ve got two sets of 1 inch pieces and I’m waiting on some 2 inch angle iron. When I get the angle iron, I’ll cut, grind and weld everything up, but make it reversible. I’m also trying to think of some ways to make some hash marks on the face of the angle iron, to grip things. Making the vice jaws wider, will allow me to hold bigger pieces vertically.
My mid-1940s drill press made easy work of drilling the parts. Also, on my 330ci street/track car, I have a Momo steering wheel and that removed the cruise control knobs. The BMW Z4 cruise control stalk works perfectly with my steering column and clock spring. Woke up to water dripping behind my refrigerator. After digging in under the sink to get a look it turns out the toilet was leaking when it was flushed. The 60 year old copper drain pipe wore thin and a hole emerged. Rather than dig up the floor i got it done through the hole under the sink I managed to cut out the pipe and run a new flange past the affected area. There is still a section of horizontal pipe about 6" long I jb welded the bottom to hopefully prolong its life a bit. I probably could have jb welded the hole and the entire pipe where it wore thin It would have been a whole lot easier.
