Way to go, Bugs!

FWIW....a while back I set about to check and replace all lights on my '02 Silverado.

Elected not to go to LED - except for my backup lights.

Those vehicles on the road with LED lights are annoying to me - so I just refuse to be a party to that.

Backup lights....100% different and a real benefit to have more illumination!

^^^^^ thanks sir!
Nice job on the bench repaint, those going into one of your garden redesigns?
I have outfitted our vehicles with all LED’s, they are great. Had to replace the aged third brake light in the 95 K1500. Brake light and bed light combo that seems to work well, although it hard to tell being all dirty n all. I found it pretty much mandatory to use dielectric grease with the LEDs. They tend wiggle loose from the factory bases and it helps with that’s and continuity snags.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6e4c2939c2.jpg
LED headlight elements too, however I made it a point to align and redirect them as not to blind oncoming drivers. They have been a lifesaver in the dark drive home.

Guess all of the trucks heavy lifting these past month caused the airbag to pop its top, either that it was overextended when the truck had a transmission service last week and the rear axle was allowed to fully extend while under pressure….[emoji848][emoji2955]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a932588f81.jpg
That will be an upcoming fix…. Will be looking like droopy drawers until that happens.
Harvested and replanted another bushel of rocks from the wall project and relocated them in the erosion control plan.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2b9ee04d19.jpg

Rocks seem to grow in abundance here. These are all from the recent project and I had to find a use for them.
Also continuing to throw blocks.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8ad83e1f19.jpg

Son and I are learning how to rebuild/clean a carb on a generator. Got it cleaned, etc. but something wrong I think with the float 'cause it tries to run but just floods the engine badly

Installed an in line thermostat for my oil cooler. After getting it installed, I don’t like where it is, so I’ll move it to the top of the fan marked with the blue square.

I had to replace the pump for the Koi pond this morning. The old one was working, but we bought it at a local big box store, and it has never pumped the volume it was supposed to. So it went to the storage shed as a backup, and this went in. It was a super easy swap, just unscrew the fitting from the old hose and screw it on this one. No adapters, no trips to the hardware store, just off and on. Only because the really good looking humble and modest genius that put in the last pump made used a genius design and it all fit. It was almost like cheating.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693320782.jpg

The old pump just made the water trickle over the waterfall. Now it is a waterfall!

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693321175.JPG

This is from a few years ago, and the plants have changed due to the master gardener effect, but the same pond. This pump was the right flow, unlike the last pump.

I sandblasted and painted my old Blackhawk jackstands this week. I'm not sure how old they are. I've had them for 50 years and they were old when I got them. They had several layers of paint and bondo on them and I figured it was about time to stop neglecting them. I sandblasted them down and checked for cracks - no problems anywhere. A couple of coats of Kubota Orange and they look like new (although I think they were originally red).

A red plastic hummingbird feeder dripped onto the deck and emptied itself.
Relocated it over bushes which might like sugar water and is now in the shade.
Cleaned it thoroughly with hot water and clean paper towel cycles.

The two sides of the clam shell design at the bottom had a 6" M-F edge which didn't seal.
(maybe it had a O-ring at some point that is missing? whatever.
I'm not driving to the store for that.)

I used nylon string as a rope-seal gasket...and for some reason that actually worked..

Delighted to have a bird resident again sitting on the wire in back watching. Small things.

Starting installing a 4” spindle lift to replace the 3” level on the F150. The main reason why, was because the upper control arms would hit the springs at full droop with the level.

The left side is done, but I need to double and triple check all of the torque specs. Tomorrow, I will start on the right side.

went to patch some dry rot on south porch rails in prep for paint. Rot was way worse than I’d thought, the bottom rail was half gone and the verticals and trim were dust with paint holding them together. Ended up rebuilding it, only the top rail was still good. couple floorboards also had to be replaced.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693709489.jpg

A bit of trim at the bottom of columns to replace tomorrow and the dry rot will be done. Surprisingly little dry rot on this house. Thank goodness.

I love my Makita 18v finish nailer. I’m terrible with a hammer, though I did manage to drop it on my foot.

Some time ago I restored a centercap on a wheel cover for my Brother-in-laws 72 Lincoln Town Car. Long story short, he lost one on a trip, I found one on ebay for him but it was from a Grand Marquise. I took a center cap from one that he had from a parts car and restored it and swapped it with the Grand Marquise center cap. So, he said that wheel cover looked so good that the other three looked bad and asked if I would restore them as well. So, yep, I did. I even made little dust caps for the back of the wheel cover so the back of the center cap would be protected. He asked what he owed me, I was like nothing. I just enjoy helping out, I think they turned out nice. They are three piece wheel covers held together with nine hex head screws. When I put everything back together I used anti sieze on the screws in case they ever need to come apart again, I figure I will be the one to take them apart, lol. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b36b7f744a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ec02e94a88.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9367ae1007.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9f704a4221.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6e89745232.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...30878d45f0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2537cfbf6b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...34bf2b8c62.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1ffdeb0c55.jpg

There are 72 spokes/fins in the middle piece which is diecast metal and heavy, (the covers are 6.6 pounds). I took a rotary tool with a little polishing head and polished in between each spoke/fin. The insides of the spoke/fins are painted black so I was careful to just polish off any built up dirt residue revealing the black paint. It was indeed a labor of love. Lol.

Is that oratex the stuff they use to wrap big stuff like boats and windmills that have to be driven down the highway? Heat gun to shrink? It looks like it could get frustrating if you don't know what you're doing. (like wrapping a car) But obviously you do!

Herr O, that's a thermo plastic with adhesive on the back. This is a pretty high tech dacron fabric with the UV protective finish factory applied.

Baz, that's pretty sweet! He's using the polyfiber system... lots of work with either system

Baz 09-07-2023 01:14 PM

OK thanks, Guy!
======

Whirling noise (almost like a power steering pump low on fluid) coming form the 4.8 Vortec in my '02 Silverado.

Fluid level fine in power steering pump. No driving issues nor anything off at the gauges.

Can't determine where it's coming from. Decided to replace the belt tension idler.

Just did that and the noise didn't go away. Seems to fade once everything warms up.

I replaced the water pump and belt earlier this year.

I wiggled all the pulleys just now before putting tension back on the belt and all felt tight enough.

Old tension idler I replaced felt OK too.

I'll throw out a long arse guess for ****s and giggles to primarily make fun of myself.
944's use brake fluid instead of power steering fluid for steering.
Mine whined for years, until someone let me in on the little secret.
I now have about 7 million spare power steering pumps in my garage if you need one :)
Probably not the cause, but rule out wrong fluid, since 'warmer' fluid seems to fix it.

Didn't seem to before but just tonight I took it for a test drive and while backing into my drive I turned the wheel slightly and the noise seemed to increase a tad. That's when I started wondering about the pump. Thanks! :)

Yes & thanks, Leaky - good to check out. I did some snooping and read through some Silverado forum threads as well as watched some YT vids and I may try to do a fluid change first to see if it changes anything. There are some additives and also different fluids to consider.

Hiya Baz,

The PSP in GM trucks is the achilles heel and they are all garbage. Lost count how many I have replaced on the green machine. I’ve looked to other options but haven’t found one I’ve liked. Any get new and all are referbed, including ones from our local GMC dealer. Remanufactured if the term they use.

In my last swap, I tried something new, a PS fluid filter. It does require you to cut your line and install it with hose clamps. Just another option you could try. From my notes in 2017

With all of the heavy lifting the K1500 has been doing all summer, and a transmission service later, my left Air Lyft Airbag failed.

Air Lyft has a lifetime warranty on their products and this kit was installed in April of 1999. I filed a warranty case on-line a week ago Tuesday and the replacement(s) arrived today. I expected one so it was a nice suprise to see two new air cells with all the trimmings.

So today I set out making the fix since I need the 95 K1500 for the “project”

Pretty easy job that took about two hours. Took my time, clipped air lines and used the provided new fitting and countless checks to make sure alignment was good and all brackets spot on. Soapy water leak check and now right as rain.

Cheers

Thanks, Bugs - will let you know what happens.

From what I read earlier - the way to go is brand new OEM AC Delco. They aren't cheap but considering the poor reviews the re manufactured ones and lesser brand ones get, gotta be the best value.

Nice looking work there, Guy...wow.....that's impressive!

Continuing Thread: What Are You Fix-It'ing Today?

More of a tool review than an update but I figured it might help someone else on the thread.

As I inch my way to concrete being poured, I am now at the stage of capstones/pad border. Since I am attempting to perfect something built out of imperfect blocks, I got the dumb idea of grinding the top tier of stone in an attempt to allow the caps to lay down a little cleaner. From my experience of cutting and grinding with a 4” abused grinder, I got the idea of using a larger 7” grinder. For all of you that poo poo harbor freight tools, you can get everything I mention here at Home Depot for substantially more money. I almost went that route but I considered that prediction of using these items again in the future.

Found a 7” grinder at HF for $69.00
Hercules universal shroud/dust pickup $37.99(worth every penny)
7” flesh eating chunky disk for $35.00
7” finishing disk for $35.00

Home Depot
Grinder $129.00
Shroud $70.00
Flesh eating chunky disk $105.00
Finishing disk $59.00

The grinder worked fantastic and the dust collection shroud was worth every penny. It was so effective that it captured so much dust and particles that it ruptured the HD 16 gal shop vac bag and filled all available space with fines. Was so heavy I had to use the leg lifting technique to off load to the garbage can.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3bfb507b02.jpg

Quick and effective way to level imperfections in blocks.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...320f5e9181.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...14d34b6b0f.jpg
Discovered that due to the velocity and coarseness of the debris, it quickly wore a hole in the new bag and filled the vac up with fines that were more like talcum powder, or silt from the Plya for those that consider themselves “Burners”[emoji6][emoji2957].https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f363926617.jpg
My solution to this issue since bags are $11.00 each and I don’t want to use one up every grinding session, I will try out a buddy’s whizbang super dust sucker-upper dealio. This little item will go between the grinder and the shop vac and hopefully divert a majority of the debris. Will find out tomorrow.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0d6d2ce85a.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d28a2613c0.jpg
I also reinforced the actual shop vac bag with some military grade duct tape hoping it will toughen up the bag’s wall where all the debris comes in at high speed.

Nice work on that repair/install and especially getting the warranty replacements under warranty, Bugs!

I never thought about doing something like that for mine. I did replace the rear shocks a long time back.

Interesting.....:p

PS - I ordered a new power steering pump and it will be here tomorrow. OEM AC Delco $235.00.....

In 2017, I tried to go brand new from the dealer. All they could due for me and my year PU was sell me an AC Delco reman, and that was from the dealer. Then again, it’s a 1995, yours is much newer.

I hope it works out for you because that would be a great fix. Nice score for $235.00, I think they quoted me close to $400.00 and it seems their way of not dealing with the older vehicles.

After installing the roll bar in my 330, it tilted the seat forward. The back of my head would hit the seats and I couldn’t look up like I wanted to add the rearview mirror.

Made a quick adjustment here at Roebling Road and it made a huge difference. Fortunately, I have my building tools in the truck. I was able to disassemble to drill new holes, then bolt it up.
