Wow....that is SO COOL, Greg! Seriously!

Really adds some personality to the shop!

Your hemp rings were a nice touch...very nautical!

Thanks for sharing!

Installed some ship salvaged porthole windows I've had laying around for years. 14", they light up the shop a bit better. Solid brass and thick glass, I know, over kill for a shop. I made inside trim rings out of 1⅛" plywood, run around the router table and wrapped with hemp

These look amazing! Did you protect the brass or will you let it oxidize?

gregpark 01-07-2024 11:37 AM

I cleaned them up a bit with Barkeepers Friend then rattle canned them with some clear lacquer

A930Rocket 01-07-2024 05:56 PM

I installed some front tow hooks on my F150. I looked into buying a 4WD front valance, that already has the cutouts, and while the part was cheap, the shipping was over $400. 🤪

I used my oscillating saw, and it took about an hour. I still need to clean up the cuts and open up the top some.

I had an idea when I saw this ball head mount in a Goodwill auction.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704751195.JPG
I've been using a GoPro suction clamp mount to mount cameras on my LGB train for on-board videos, but it isn't what I call camera aiming friendly.
I won the auction and got about to mounting the ball head to a piece of plexiglass that would fit in the compartment of a freight car I was given last year.
It works pretty well now that I've got the balance worked out. The camera needs to be in the center of the car or it will cause it to derail going around a corner.
Works well and is pretty stable too.

Some good luck today or maybe bad however you look at it. Our 99 tahoe crapped out while pulling in the driveway after driving around for 3 hours this morning doing errands. Fuel pump isnt running. Back end was sticking out in the road so i pulled it up to the garage with my jeep. Havnt had time to diagnose it yet but did the fuel pump maybe 10 or 12 years ago it seemed like a cheap one always pretty loud. Also fixed my snowblower. I got it for free turned out the auger gearbox is stripped out both the brass gear and worm are bad. Its an ariens 10 or 15 years old with an aluminum box. I have a bunch of old cast iron boxes from 70s and 80s blowers that i saved from ones i scrapped. Turns out one bolted right in no mods at all

I'm making trinkets for some friends. I thought I'd get out the jewelers saw and see if my hand-eye coordination could keep up with my imagination.
The first part is going OK, we'll see how well this project progresses.

Got the fuel pump swapped out my brother had a spare one. The ring that locks it down was just rust and so are the tabs on the tank so iv got to make some sort of hold down clamp to the floor. We have a pannel cutout under the back seat for easy access.

Was wondering if you had to drop the tank....good idea with the panel. Did you put it there or was it already there when you got your 'hoe?

On my Silverado I prop the bed up. Still a PITA. I've seen pickup owners who put hatches in on theirs. I'm not doing that to a perfectly good bed....

I found that little bugger in a free pile! It works perfectly, the limiting factor is my skill. The material is soft copper, about .020 or .030.

A friend of mine had 4 old boards in his attic. About six and a half feet long and 17" wide. Rough sawn and five quarter. Been stored for 70 years or more by his grandfather who supposedly brought them home from Asia. He knows I'm a wood guy and he asked if I wanted them or he was going to cut them up for firewood. As soon as I picked one up I said you're not burning these. Very heavy and I knew they were something special. Some splitting from heat in the attic and not stickered properly but I'll put it to good use. I ripped up a split board and ran them through the planer. Old growth, tight vertical grain Rosewood! the tree must have been hundreds of years old. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704822640.jpg
Rainy day project yesterday. I pulled apart a split board by hand and noticed the curve in the grain. I had a beat up 4lb. sledge head that needed a handle. Got a little carried away and I probably will not be hitting stuff with this hammer.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704822995.jpg
The handle came from this splithttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704823172.jpg

Finished with Howard's Feed-N-Wax

Very cool ! Every time I fix a wood handle they dont hold up very long I guess im doing it wrong.
Heres the fuel pump you can see the hatch i cut and the brace to hold it down. I wedged it in with rubber pieces and screwed them in place.

gregpark 01-09-2024 06:58 PM

Cool, it does look like mine. I tried to research the year on mine but apparently it's older than the records. No number. The guy I got it from said his dad brought it out from NY in 1951 but had it forever before then. I'm guessing 1930s. Very solid drill press. I find this sticker on the front amusing http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1704859087.jpg

A930Rocket 01-09-2024 07:11 PM

I’m not sure about the age of mine either. Yours looks to be in better shape, with better paint. Yours also has the drill stop on the right.

gregpark 01-09-2024 07:18 PM

Notice my scissor jack under the table? They hadn't figured out a crank up lift yet

A930Rocket 01-09-2024 08:39 PM

I saw that. My table goes up and down by hand OK, but to move the head up, I use a hydraulic jack. That sucker is heavy.

gregpark 01-10-2024 08:28 AM

Yeah the motor is heavy. Mine generally stays at the top. If I have to move it down I use a piece of 2x4 on the scissor. I bolted the scissor jack to the base and made a small hand crank for fast and accurate depth adjustments. Your press must be even older than mine with no depth stop up top. With some fabrication you could add one. It's a handy feature

That's pretty clever. The only problem I see with that is it limits the capacity when you need to park the table at the bottom. Has that been a problem?

911 Rod 01-10-2024 08:34 AM

Do you need the jack for fine adjustments in height? Mine is just as heavy and I have no problem wiggling it to were it needs to be. I have to be careful not to let it go though.

I've had to remove the jack on occasion but rarely.

It just makes for a quicker adjustment. I always seem to be in a hurry! 😃

If you examine the head of any striking tool you'll notice the top hole is slightly bigger than the bottom hole. It's actually a slight funnel. I drum sand the head end of the handle to fit the smaller bottom hole then hack saw a crisscross on top before inserting. Insert, pack with epoxy and drive in wedges. Let it sit over night then hack saw off the excess at the top. It will never fail until you miss that piece of rebar with the head and break your new handle! 😀

The attic project continues. Made this insulated attic stair opening cover out of 2" rigid foam board rated R-10 but I had enough left over material out of a 4 x 8 sheet to double up the top layer to R-20.

Good job on that attic insulation, what glue did you use? I'm looking for a Styrofoam safe glue.

I had a tube of general purpose construction adhesive in my hand and then saw this on the shelf at Home Depot. Set up well enough overnight to handle but label states is has a 7 day cure time.

Good idea on the foam insulation box.

I tried attaching blueboard to a piece of OSB using liquid nail. The liquid nail just melted the blue board and would not stick.

My parents had a whole house fan at their house and covered it with a sleeping bag to stop drafts. We sold the house a couple years ago and I hope somebody took the sleeping bag off, before they tried to turn the fan on!

Replaced the rusty D rings, straightened a fender, fixed a loose toolbox lid and a replaced the damaged jack on the trailer.

All of our kitchen forks had a brown gunk embeded in the rough steel between the tongs it was gross and impossible to wash out. 50 year old food yummy. I took a file to them and wet sanded between to make them a smooth surface hopefully they will stay cleaner. It stunk too once it was disturbed.

What brand of silverware?

I've been using the same set of Oneida silverware for at least 30 years. When the wife (then girlfriend) moved in, a spoon would disappear every couple of months or so. Back then I was able to purchase replacements at a reasonable cost. A week or so ago a fork turned up missing. I priced them out now, eBay wants $11 - $12 a piece for replacements. OCD is a terrible thing. I redoubled my efforts to locate the missing fork, remembered my wife came home from a long shift one night and dropped a fork under the couch and just got another one. The missing fork was under the couch.

Went to visit the granddaughter this weekend for her 3rd birthday. As we were leaving Saturday night, one of the other grandpas went out to start his car, and when he came back he couldn't get in the front door. We couldn't open it from the inside either, the latch had failed. Sunday I took a look at it. Even after removing the knobs, couldn't figure out how to retract the latch, ended up pulling the hinge pins and removing the door that way. I bought a new lock, same brand, and just replaced the latch. Couldn't find just the latch at Menards. Now I have a new lock, no latch. I'm going to call the company later today and see if I can get just a latch. If not, or if it is too expensive, I'll just put the rest on FBM.

I'm quite pleased with myself :)

On Sunday, and the following Monday is a public holiday, the sewage got blocked at a rental house of mine. Tenants phoned and said one of the toilets was blocked. It turned out it was the sewage pipe from the whole house and blocked under the driveway or where it joins the main (city) sewage pipe.

A few years ago I bought one of those drain unblocking tools. Looks like a spool of one inch wide coiled spring. So down the maintenance hatch it went and I found the blockage at about 10 meters. With the auger fitting on the end and the electric drill spinning it at my end, it cleared it.

A very satisfying suction/vacume sound at all the water poo and paper disappeared.

All these tools I buy just in case I may need them... Well sometimes I do.

Finally got the trailer tires back from the shop and mounted them on the trailer today. I decided to go with MAXXIS D rated tires.

I was going to pitch the old four tires out (in good shape and 3-4 years old), but I read so many comments about having two spares, I thought four would be better! 😂
