One of my monthly accounts has some hedges that are getting a little old. I planted them 10 years ago when I did the landscaping. In particular the 'Trinette' Scheffleras, of which there are 4 separate hedge groupings...2 in back and 2 in front.

I cleared it with the owner to cut them way back and this morning did the first grouping (5 plants). My approach was to use my handheld Kebtec cordless pruners. Took just under 1 hour including hauling the cut branches to the curb for pickup tomorrow. I also filled two 30 gallon pots with small pieces.

I will continue to cut the others down, timing the work with each week's yard waste pickup day (Wed. here).

These Kebtecs are NICE!

Good idea getting rid of the long dry grass - yikes, fire prevention.

An update on a previous post:

Saturday my usual "helper" came across the lawn and put my golf cart away for me when I wasn't looking. He managed to completely FUBAR the latch on the double door to our "barnage." (long story behind that name.)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1716900935.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1716900935.jpg

After looking for the proper astragal and being horrified at the prices of even the wrong ones, I took note of my situation and decided to pull an end run on the whole problem. Instead on spending $200 plus on some kind of stragal I installed a couple of cane bolts at a cost of just over $30.

We removed the front bumper cover, fenders, fender liners, and headlights from the little Corolla today. We also sanded the repaired areas on the underside of the hood. Getting it ready to be put back together soon. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bdaeb92837.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...df4217f9f6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...96f50fe986.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e9b3954e5d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1550b00b2d.jpg

I'm working on this at the moment. I have masked off the thin chrome strips on the Corolla grill and it is almost ready for painting. Tools used: Washi tape, hobby knife, and a magic stick. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...745c558efc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d922c7efd4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...620237aa9e.jpg

Can you tell me about the magic stick?

911 Rod 06-09-2024 01:26 PM

Pressure washer pump went and I had hard time finding one that fit my needs.
The one I got worked great, but I couldn’t get the spray hose connected without deflating the tire.
Need to Jack this bad boy motor up to clear tire.
Easy you say? Need exact length bolts, so now I’m tapping and cutting bolts.
Worked out great.

The magic stick is made of Teflon and is used for panel removal. We use them at work. I'm not sure of the actual name of the thing, but everyone has always called it a "magic stick". They work great for when you need to pry on something that you don't want scratched up.

It is a 2003 model, and it has a 16 valve 4 cylinder but not sure of the size. It is my son's girlfriend's car. A tree fell across the front of it a little more than a year ago.
She lived with an Aunt and Uncle when the tree fell on her car and they didn't want to claim it on their home owner's insurance so she was pretty much stuck with a damaged car that she couldn't drive. My son and I are fixing the car for her.

Edit: engine size is a 1.8 ltr.

A 1.8 ltr. Very nice. VERY nice of you to fix it for her.

I've always had a Corolla since about the mid 1980's. I'm up to number 6 or 7 now. The latest is a 2014 wagon with a 1.5 ltr engine and cvt transmission. It uses so little fuel it's unbelievable. Probably half the fuel the previous year 2000 used.

GF's is a near new 2 litre hatch. Compared with mine it's a bit of a racing car. Quite refined, but I prefer my wagon.

My first thought as well. Then .... it would have to go straight up as the motor was to the left and the handle to the right. The current fitting is pressed in so now I'm buying a $20+ fitting. And I have to change my clothes and go shopping.
I had all the parts to do it this way.

Thank you. It is a labor of love for sure. It is a pretty nice Corolla with power windows and a sunroof. It kinda cracks me up that it has white faced gauges as those were in all the "sporty" cars back in the day. [emoji23]

New headlights should arrive at the end of the week, and I will touch up the bumper cover this week as well. We may have it all back together this weekend.

Edit: The car is a Corolla LE.

MORE TREE TRIMMING !!!!! Fire mitigation regs say you should trim tree branches to more than six feet above the ground level.

General rule of thumb is..... you should be able to walk UNDER your tree canopy, if it's a "yard tree".

If used for privacy or as a screen - different pruning philosophy.

I ordered a new hook and loop pad for my Rigid random orbital sander. Vicki loaned the sander to a friend and they tried to use the hook pad as a sanding pad and wore all the hooks off of it.
The phrase "DO NOT LOAN OUT MY TOOLS!" does not compute in her charitable little mind.

Anyhow, I ordered the part on ereplacement parts and they had this little quiz to score your DIY instincts. Turns out I'm a fixer! Who would have guessed?

Decided to see if the a/c needed cleaning. I wasn’t expecting this, seeing we moved here less than 2 years ago.
The embarrassing thing is I was in HVAC and used to clean these things all the time.

Would love to see the "after" photo if you can re-size it, Brian.

I was going to do mine this past winter but never got around to it. I do it in the winter when I'm not using it as much. It's 10 years old and still going strong.

What is that on yours? Looks like lint.....

A930Rocket 06-15-2024 04:31 PM

Is the debris only on that side in the picture or on all four sides? I’ve never seen that before.

All four sides, it was like a carpet. Plus there’s an insulating blanket on the compressor.
I’m surprised it worked as good as it did.

Just dirt and dust. The dryer vents aren’t even close.

I just used a garden hose, on spray mode. Not to much water pressure just enough to loosen the dirt. I started from the top and worked my way down. I also removed the condenser motor bracket and hosed from the inside out and removed leaves and dirt from the bottom. I also turned the power off to the unit.
It took me an hour and a half.

HobieMarty 06-15-2024 07:02 PM

Wow,good job on the clean up. That unit should work more efficiently now, that's for sure. Our unit is under warranty, and a technician comes out in the spring and fall and performs a check-up and cleaning.

We made more progress on the Corolla today. I touched up the bumper cover with some silver paint I had, and it matched up pretty well. One mounting tab was broken, and half of it was missing, so I used some plastic bonder epoxy and made a tab, let it cure really good, and then we got it all back together. Tomorrow, we will put the R1 door latch back together, and then all that is left is to put the front wheels/tires back on, and she will be good to go. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...711cbd3032.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ec997f4e87.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f4d1de0ef5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b667921952.jpg

OK thanks, Brian. No chemicals then - just H2O......cool.

I always spray mine from the inside out too.

Don't forget to do your filter inside now! I have to do mine tomorrow.....;)

I finally replaced the O2 sensor on my Mazda5 yesterday. Easier than I was expecting, since the structural member in the way could simply be unbolted. Easy Peasy and now the car runs REALLY smoothly.

Today, fixed some house locks and latches. Front door deadbolt was sticky. Garage door had always been near impossible to shut without turning the knob, and even that was getting difficult. Remove, lube with graphite....works WAY better now.

Today, looked into what was causing the toilets to VERY slowly leak from the tank to the bowl. In the process, I found that the valves at the wall do not shut completely off. But that's okay because the problem was remedied by noticing the floating ball thingies in the tanks had become a tiny bit less buoyant. Enough that the tanks were filling up to the top of the overflow tubes. Adjusted the valve/float mechanism and the problem went away.

Today, went to fix the kitchen sink strains. Apparently, the removable strain/stopper baskets to fit them are impossible to find or nearly so. Disassembled some stuff to just replace the entire fixture at the bottom of the sinks and discovered the geniuses who installed them used silicon adhesive instead of plumbers putty. Now back to trying to source the unobtanium baskets instead.

Retirement is very cool. There's basically time enough for everything....almost.

I’ve run into that several times and spent too much time unwinding them. Next time, I might think about trimming the bottom off and reinstalling the knobs.
