Richard, sorry to hear about your health issues. You sure are a fighter! Hearing about the worst of the Type 1 issues (blindness, sores, feet being cut off) keeps me awake at night some time. I don't want to become a burden to my wife or family most of all. I'm lucky I guess that I got diagnosed fairly late in life. Fighting now to keep my A1C at as close to 6 as I can get. It's been there for about 18 of the 24 months since I was diagnosed

Diabetics tend to have high cholesterol, a bad LDL/HDL ratio, problems with the lining of the blood vessels or all of the above. Leads to microvascular disease, which results in myriad bad things

Oh yeah, I wanted to add that my most dangerous low blood sugar time is at night while I am asleep. I used to wake up sweating and dizzy from low blood sugar. Now have trained my Golden Retriever, Pepper to wake me up when my sugar starts to get below 70 and leads me to the restroom where my checker is. If it is low I give her treats while having something myself. Have not woke up sweaty since been 4 months.

The last two times she actually pranced leading me to the restroom.

She sometime woke me up so she could go out to use the restroom. First couple of times I woke and could tell my sugar was low I made her follow me to check my blood sugar and give her treats when I ate something. If she just needed out, I let here out without complaining, but did not give her treats. It did not take more than 3 times for her to wake me specifically because my sugar was low and not need out. She really really likes Milk Bone teeth cleaning chew bones.

I understand dogs can smell your blood sugar on your breath 30 minutes before that level registers on a meter using blood samples.

Be sure to check your vision regularly. Started not being able to read billboards and highway signs as well and my eye doc sent me to a speciallist. And Yes, they are able to fix your eyes and keep you from going blind!

Was sent to my new foot guy, a foot wound care specialist, by my regular foot guy after a couple of months of my foot not getting any better, or worse.

The real bummer of all this is I can no longer heel and toe. My right foot just doesn't tilt any more. So if you are interested in a 94 928GTS that is a very beautiful isis Blue Metallic, it is not fun to drive a 5 speed any more.

I've been following along on his recommendations for the last 6 weeks and have lost about 9 lbs.....179 (not 175 as I thought I was at!) down to 170 now. And my waist size has also dropped to a 32 where I haven't been since about age 25! I also feel really good and don't seem to have pre-lunch and pre-dinner hunger pangs like I used to. I'll get a second a1c test done in another two months and I'll see where I'm at.

If any of you guys/gals are in a similar state wrt prediabetes or if you want to loose some weight and maintain a healthier diet I'd also highly recommend Rick Mystrom's book!

Glad that worked out! Sounds like you are making great progress. I just had my A1c checked at the end of March and 3 1/2 months on the continuous glucose monitor and a new insulin regimen mine went from 6.5 to 5.8 which for a type 1 is about as low as I feel safe being in order to avoid too many episodes of hypoglycemia. Now to lose 10 lbs :-)

I go to my GP and he does a fasting glucose, comes back 1.26. They did a second one and it came back .97 followed that with A1c which returned 5.9 and I'm 72 and 204# at 72".

Doc says i'm type 2 diabetes mellitus, no other symptoms.

Is that a hasty diagnosis? Am I overreacting?

I told him I will be working on diet, weight reduction and more exercise.

Next thing I know type 2 diabetes shows in my records!

Maybe eat something that is primarily protein in the evening to hold you over

Up to 7.1 my last blood draw. PA prescribed trulicity injections. Read the common side affects. Decided no way. Don't want to spend my time feeling too weak to do anything, nauseous, and ****ting my pants.

75, getting VERY weary of spending time in waiting rooms...maybe that's the plan...by the time the grim reaper comes calling, you open the door and welcome him in.

December was 9.1. Now somewhere between 6 and 7, can’t remember exactly.

Can’t stand the medicines. Using metformin and glipizide. Constant digestive issues with these for 2 years now.

I am. I get my a1c tested every 3 months. I’ve given up testing daily. I can never get the tester to work and I’ve been through a few. Very frustrating and when I need it most my hands shake so bad I can’t hold a test strip steady enough to stick it in.

Had my worst experience last weekend doing yard work. Suddenly thought I was dying like all the blood in my head rushed to my feet and my legs went cold. Couldn’t swallow. Wife made me food but I couldn’t even chew a piece of a scrambled egg. Eventually it went away.

For me the biggest problem causer is without a doubt alcohol. I have pretty much reduced my drinking to the occasional craft beer or glass of wine. I won’t tell you how much I used to drink but clearly I had a problem for 30 years. If I drink heavily now I have serious issues for days afterwards

I also quit smoking after a 2 pack a day habit for 32 years. Can’t say I feel any better.

I do vape and have no plans to stop because the risk of going back to cigarettes is just too great. Sometimes I wonder if the sugars in the ecig liquid are being absorbed. Very little evidence about this

Also, when your blood sugar ends up elevated, how long does it take for that to happen? In other words, for a person with a "normal" blood sugar level, of say 82, can they wake up one day and have it be 130?

I'm no doc but it seems like that may be a bit hasty. 5.9 is edging up there. As noted above, get Mystrom's book. Best of luck.

I am a type 1 so keeping close track is critical. I'm two and a half years in and am now on both short and long acting insulin injections. I finally broke down and bought a continuous or in this case "flash" glucose monitor. I have to self pay as my insurance won't cover it. You may want to check it out. Seems like you need to better track your blood glucose and understand what different foods and vape chemicals or whatever is doing to your levels. I can buy 6 weeks of sensors, changed out every 14 days, for $120 at Costco. Works great for me.

Yea I know. I keep it at 3 or 6mg. Should stop totally but the fear of inevitably going back to smoking is too great not to mention the $600 a month I was spending on them in New York.

FYI I have the freestyle lite monitor. I truly hate it but everyone says it’s so easy to use. I don’t know why I don’t find it easy. I was a teenager in the 80’s and grew up using gadgets and writing code on my Commodore 64. This stupid thing has me beat. Sucks getting old
