Yea, the crew is fine, and Porsche gets to make some more brand new cars.

Fire at sea is the worst case scenario, glad everyone made it out safely.

‘Every one of them suffered smoke inhalation. Then they faced the prospect of abandoning ship and then their lifeboat failed. It was pretty awful all round and they were shocked.......

The lifeboat’s engine had been damaged, which left it unable to move away from the flames leaving the crew ‘bobbing around like a cork in a bathtub.’............

Clean up efforts are underway after 2,200 tons of heavy fuel seeped into the ocean.

Grimaldi Lines, the Italian company which operates the vessel, said that the ship carried 365 containers - 45 of which had ‘hazardous materials,’ according to the BBC.

These materials included 10 tons of hydrochloric acid and 70 tons of sulphuric acid.

French authorities said that because most of the materials had already burned, the damage was likely to be ‘very localised’ and ‘would not have serious consequences for the environment.’
Suffering smoke inhalation from a fire burning hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid cannot be a pleasant experience.

I'm guessing some of these folks will never be able to work again.

Too bad about the cars, but they can be replaced.

I've never seen a ship design like that before, interesting.

The loss of some brand new cars is an environmental catastrophe, nothing else. The loss of a few new Porsches is absolutely insignificant in this story compared to the total loss and other aspects of the incident, i.e. health, environmental, financial...

This really bums me out - my wife and were planning on picking up our 911 GT2 RS in Sao Paulo and doing the loop south then north into Chile.

Cancelling flights, hotels and other roadside attractions is painful.

BTW, the article is odd: how do you run a ship aground these days, then sink in 15k feet of water?

Well first you off load the Porsches and other really valuable items, then run it aground and scuttle it. Oh and hire a crew of guys you REALLY don't like at all.

It is odd, run aground, then take to middle of abyss, and then suddenly a fire breaks out.

Oh, and the life boat is sabotaged too.

I suppose when the ship sinks and hits the ocean floor, it can be considered a case of "running aground."

Actually, the proper term for insurance purposes is "touched bottom."

Hey--that's what they said on the Michael Jackson documentary.

I wonder if those GT2s were still on it when it sank.

The news report makes no sense. Left Casablanca destined for Brazil, but sinks off France in 15000 ft of water after hitting a reef and catches fire? Really?
