Is the CVT gearbox on an Audi TT a deal breaker?

On a different forum the subject came up on the CVT.

How bad is this - if someone wants to buy an older version of the Audi TT?

That big of a deal? Or just a detail to be aware of?

Would it be a constant irritation to an owner - or only to someone who really gets into all things technical?

TIA!

I would only consider a CVT on a Toyota or Lexus. They know how to build things right.
My daughter has an Audi Q5 off warranty now. That is enough already but to add a CVT I could not imagine the costs if it went wrong.

You are implying Audi doesn't know how to "build things right"?

And.....your daughter's Q5 doesn't have a CVT - but you are still worried?

I'm not clear on what you are saying here, Recycled.

Am phylosophically opposed to CVT cars...too close to witchcraft when there are so many terrific transmissions being made.

Then why are there so many off warranty Audi's for sale? A CVT in an Audi? No way.

Have driven numerous CVT equipped cars, not a fan.

My DD Escape has it.

Inconsistent feel from day to day.

He may be implying it, but I’ll flat out say it.
Never ever ever have an off warranty Audi.

The only CVT I’ve ever had experience with was in a Lesbaru. Not a fan.

Jesus. So much terrible information in this thread.

I agree that the CVT isn’t a great option. Why not get the stick? The TT is basically a VW golf wearing a sexier body. Fairly reliable, easy to work on fun little car.

Why are there so many offwarranty Audi’s for sale? Because most people who buy luxury cars trade them in every 3-5 years to get something else.

Mrs. Lee's 2006 Mini had a CVT. It had issues from day one and she bought it new. The dealer was able to do something with the software reflash to make it right. But when we decided to have the "lifetime" fluid changed before the warranty expired, the dealer called to say there was not much fluid left in it, it took several flushes to make it look clean again and was then making a funny noise. So they didn't charge us for it. She traded the car in a week later.

Prius/Lexus isn't really a CVT (of mechanical type). More of a differential with motor on other side...

I dislike CVTs . Wife leased a Honda fit with one, and it was horrible--droned loudly, and never felt like it was in the right gear. My Ford Fusion hybrid also had one, and I put 45K miles on it, disliking it most of the time, but liking the 40 mpg I got with the car. Apparently hybrids have to have CVTs--I've been told that by engineering types, but can't tell you the technical details. Somebody here will.

I like TTs, but I'd only want a manual.

"So many off warranty Audis":
Repair costs of Audis (and BMWs) make them very undesirable once the warranty has expired.

CVTs are perfect for disposable cars.

Mom's 02 Mini had a CVT and it was crappy, lemoned the car after a year and got her a 3 series. I had a CVT in my 06 Murano. That was an absolute workhorse for me, but the response from the CVT was not the best. You hear increased noise when you floor it, but you aren't going much faster.

Get a stick or a regular auto.

I thought VW/Audi used DSGs, not CVTs?
