Looking for an adult conversation.
I eat meat. Love it. I have tapered off on quantity. For my health. I hunt on occasion. I’m not a rabid hunter, but I do enjoy getting out and after the tasty ones. Varying levels of success. Mostly; I hunt like a vegetarian. I certainly see the positive side of hunting. The animal lives free and happy. Natural. That is until a hunter comes along. That part does suck for the critter. But compare that to the bulk of the animals coming from the meat producers. That isn’t a happy life. And the ending I imagine is at least an entire day of fear. My wife loved pork. (All Chinese people do). She wanted to dispatch her own pork; so we did. Raised a hog, then did the wet work when it came to size. Talk about peeking behind the curtain and seeing how they make the sausage. Let’s just say that she now eats very little pork. And we did it very humanely. Quiet walk to a big pile of cut apples....pop! So, eating meat. Buying it from the stores: that insulated the general population from the grittier aspects no? In general. Anyone do their own butchering. Chickens? Etc? You 100% packaged meat eaters. No interest in trying it once? Not all of my meat consumption “slow down” is for health. Wish I could farm my own more and I wish I was a better hunter as well. |
I will be eating SWEET AND SOUR wild turkey this week. I did okay.

It’s not that I don’t have any interest in butchering my meat. I just don’t think I can go through with it, let alone eat what I’ve killed.

The meat commodity in this world is a sick process. Anyone with ties to the raising of animals to be slaughtered for food doesn't eat a lot of meat. Good friend of mine was in charge of the feed for numerous chicken growers here in CA and even though he seldom was in contact with live animals, he won't eat chicken. The fact that he will eat beef astonishes me because he damn well knows the same thing goes on on the next farm raising beef or whatever.
In this country the industry is known as the industrialized meat industry (aka Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations – CAFO) uses carbon monoxide to keep red meat unnaturally red while on display in the market. Fook that. If you want to hunt to eat, do it. Fishing seems OK to me too when it's not purely for sport. Sport fishermen should be thrown to the sharks. And you saw the sentiment right here about the killing of the bear sow and cubs. Rightfully so. |
How about fishing?

I've caught a lot of all sizes of fish, most dispatched and and cleaned myself. Also killed and cleaned a lot of Dungeness crabs (break or chop in half to kill them before cleaning and steaming), which requires a lot of butchery. Haven't killed hoofed critters, but don't think I'd have any problem doing what had to be done. It's not pleasurable, but it's part of life. IMO, if you can't stand to know how what's on your plate got there, maybe you shouldn't eat it.

I can have a deer cut into and whatever I need and whatever amount I want ground for $55 and I get my own deer back and we use some of the ground to make our own sausage. Not worth doing the cuts myself. Small game and fish we of course do at home.

I think hunting to eat or raising your own is a really noble way to truly understand our relationship to food and if everyone had to do it at least a few times in their life we would all be better off in many ways.
But I'm not going to do it unless I have to. |
Deer, turkey, pork.. been there, done that. It's not for everyone and I get that. I couldn't raise an animal just to kill it for food. Don't know why, just not built that way.

Yes, I'm a vegetarian since 1985. Before that I could walk into a steak house and eat 2 prime rib dinners back to back. But I started wondering about things like hot dogs ans sausage years before that. I gave up bacon in the 70's. Same with anything called "lunch meat." It sort of evolved until one day in '85 I was eating a a Mexican food chain here in CA called El Torito. I knew somehow that the siht I was stuffing in my pie hole was not fit for eating. I pushed the plate forward and quit.
So, you ask, what about chicken and fish? Well, see the story about my friend at the chicken farm conglomerate. That took care of that and besides, the chicken today in the market is nothing like the chicken my mother bought. That leaves fish. I could and should eat a little fish but my wife never cared for fish so it's off the menu at home. AFA ordering fish at a nice fish place, IDK, just never got back into any flesh. Don't miss it at all — ever. Not even at one week or one year. Just done with it. AFA cantdrv55's comment about not eating what he killed, it seems to me that's indicative of the reason farmers don't name slaughter animals. Or that's what I hear. BTW, I'm not a card carrying member of PETA and their demagoguery. I go out and enjoy dinner with meat eaters any time I get the chance. We veggies are a minority in the room and smart ones know that. |
I catch and clean my own fish and birds (pheasant, quail) but haven't cleaned and gutted a deer or similar animal, wouldn't be a problem.
I was close to taking a hog butchering class but got busy and never did it. I don't think it would become a regular thing due to time and storage involved, just more info on buying and preparing good meat. I have made sausage and bacon, sure beats the store bought stuff. |

I raised some cattle for food, fed them all the good stuff, plus they ate anything they could find in their two acres. I kept tabs of the bills. When it came time we had a guy come shoot them, one at a time, that was plenty, he did everything, hauled it off and hung it, packaged it. we sold 1/2 of it each time to friends. It tasted different, I am sure it was better for us but it cost a bunch. It was fun but not worth the price for me.

My grandfather worked at the Oklahoma City, Armor and Company during the 1920s to when the plant closed in the 1960s. He did just about every job possible there, from the killing to the loading the cut up meat into rail cars and trucks. Evey aspect of cutting up animals, in the days before USDA and after. He would not eat hot dogs they made. He ate meat and lots of it.
I know a couple of ranchers that raise cattle on the fields they own. Some have the cattle butchered themselves and many sell them to a wholesaler. We don't want to buy a side of beef or even a 1/4. |

Fish we did ourselves. Could filet a fish when I was 5 years old. Grew up with a freezer full of meats, and garden stuffs. Also had lots of home canned and root celler stuff. The root celler stuff was kept in wooden boxes. Mom told me about when she was little butchering a hog was a big family event. Some was cooked and ate that day, some put in the smokehouse, and some in the ice house. And some was made into sausage and hung on the back porch. Said they made head cheese a couple of times, but nobody really liked it. Only made it for this one relative of my grandparents that just loved it.. |
