Do you know of any shops still rebuildiing motors ?

Other than p cars ,and exotics ? My buddy blew up his supercharged vette. He wants me to go through it .
I gotta be honest, I have zero desire to do it. Not even at any price point. My machinist retired, and I keep really really busy with day to day repairs. The only way I can pull off a quality rebuild , is if I do it on the weekends . I have spent so much of my spare time in my life doing jobs like this, that i'm just burnt out .
Of course I would still do one for myself if I had to, or wanted to .
I'm willing to do the replacement, Ill even tear it down, and deliver it to the local engine builder for him.

The only ones I know are in CT so useless to you.

May question though is how much would he save vs buying a crate engine?
With a warranty...

Of the handfull of really good machinist / rebuild shops in Northern Va; 3 have shuttered their doors. These 3 did everything from base stock rebuilds to drag / circle track racing. All had excellent reputation for quality work, as in - you never had to check what was done, because was spot-on.

Problem is stock stuff like old SBC / SBF / Mopar engines no one fools with anymore. All the new generation engine are so good, last forever and just don't fail like all that ancient stuff. And if they do, go to the junk yard get another and plug it in.

Coupled with so many aftermarket as well as OE manufacturers offering crate engines at great prices and good warranties. There's really no market anymore.

If you're doing race engines, you'd better bring your "A" game with most HP/ TQ at a competitive price. There's a guy that's now doing only racing / pulling truck engines and even when 1 of those goes out for $35-50K he says he really doesn't make much with the time involved.

Carolina Machine Engines, Johnston SC Rebuilt Engines and Rebuilt Motors from CME

Ship it there on a pallet, get it back on a pallet.

They drag race themselves, so they know how to build a motor. They rebuilt the 7M-GE in my Supra Champ Car, and the motor was the best part of the car.

George's Speed Shop in Dayton, Ohio.
George doesn't do much of the work anymore, but at 85 he is at the shop everyday and his son Greg does the work. Aside from his own racing engines, George and Greg built hundreds of spec engines for the Indy Lights series. Every engine had to dyno out within a couple of HP of each other (ie they do precision work). The shop is still listed as one of the series's limited certified engine suppliers.

Having never done one but having watched several YouTube videos, the LS engines seem to be Briggs and Stratton simple.

I’ve done plenty of other engines including the 2.7RS build in my track car so i’m not a total armchair mechanic with an opinion.

I think most mechanics can make more replacing parts instead of sitting in front a bench and rebuilt motors? PLus, its a dedicated solid few day of work especially if you have other work that's continue to come in. That's not including taking to the machine shop and all the back and forth wasting the day. I think that's why people don't do it anymore. What's wrong with a crate motor, like others have said?

I think all mechanics would like a job like this. But who wants to pay for their learning curve and all the extra hours this involves.

A crate motor sounds excellent.

Like LS9?

Crate and core it back to GM.

Be honest. It's not worth your time.

If it was an ls9 and the connecting rods got hurt (they are titanium), he’ll deeply regret even starting unless he thinks keeping the numbers matching means something. What year is the car and which model? What “blew up”?

I know nothing about Vettes, but I was thinking about the above (in bold) while reading this thread. Doesn't seem to be any real practical or economic point to having a rebuild otherwise.
