Planning on buying a Jeep Wrangler

Well I’ve gone from thinking I wanted a jag or BMW convertable to buying a 4 door Jeep Wrangler.

I’m waiting again for the old Boxster to get out of the shop. It’s been there for a week due to the water pump freezing up and a few other things. I’m tired of having to wait for parts and not trusting it to go far from home. I’m thinking I’d have to buy a used Jag or BMW and would end up being in the same place in a few years.

Also the grandkids now live close and I’m thinking trips to the beach would be easier in a basic Jeep.

I’m golfing tommorow and shooting sporting clays on Wednesday, so maybe Thursday I can go to the dealership and pick one out.

I hate buying new cars.

i was waiting for the new ones to come out but after pricing one with all the options i wanted i said no way and ended up with a grand cherokee limited for around the same cost but a much better driving experience. i drive a lot for work. if you don't do a ton of highway miles then i think the wrangler is great. my dad has one and loves it.

I owned a Wrangler for a while. YMMV. It was fun for a while but a bit impractical for me. At the time I was doing occasional highway driving and the soft top made it way too load for me. This may be different with the newer models but the other issue I had is that they are stupid simple to break into. I started looking into installing a security system and in the end just decided to sell it after my job changed and required even more highway driving.

Love my 2007 2door Jeep Wrangler Sahara... Been driving it for almost 10 years now.. It is fun to drive... so much so, that my motorcycles are collecting dust. over 90,000 trouble free miles. have had jeeps most of my life.. the new ones are so much better than the older ones. Handles nicely and 100+ miles per hour one finger on the steering wheel smooth. Though with 35" tires I buy lots of gas.

Yea they cost a lot, but also seem to hold there value. Have you guys priced a 4Runner lately? I drive 12 miles a few time a week to the golf coarse. The airport is 5 miles away, and so is the gun club. I put around 5-6 thousand miles a year on the Porsche, so probably will be about the same in the Jeep. Except probably a few more miles taking the grandkids to the Beech and other places close by. The wife is very particular about her new BMW, so the Jeep will probably haul the grandkids when available.

oh i get it..preaching to the choir.

the new 4runner is insane as well...the tacoma..yeowza!! all new cars cost a lot now..

the local jeep population is made up of fully modified rigs. the aftermarket support available must be staggering.

i saw one recently with a hardtop. aftermarket. it was reminiscent of the old toyota Fj40 tops with those cool corner windows. it looked cool as hell.

Loved my Wrangler. Paid 36K for it and sold it two years later for 34K.

Love that color. But none around here to be found. And I haven’t bought one yet, but my golfing buddy owns the dealership and hopefully won’t hose me to bad.

I LOVE our Jeep! It's our 3rd JK. We bought a 2 door and just couldn't wrestle the kids in and out of the back. The 4 door was fine. The one we have now is our 2nd four door. Fully loaded Ruby with MW3 package plus pretty much every possible dealer installed ARB option the original owner could check the box for - LOL! I'm using it for work right now. Surprisingly comfortable vehicle and sits high enough that I can really get a good view in traffic. We do wheel with it and it is absolutely impressive off-road.

If you are looking at a 2018, I think they are selling the JK as a 2018 along side the new JL. If the price is the same - buy the JL. Otherwise, just buy a year or two old JK. Best buys are the used ones with all the extra add-ons because you buy the add-ons for around half what the previous owner paid for them (winch, racks, sliders, etc).

I’m looking at more of a base model. I don’t want all the gadgets. Air Conditioning is the only must have, after that I’d prefer a auto, 3.75 gears, and trailer package.

Not sure about a hard top. I don’t even care if I have to crank the windows. Currently they are dropping the price of the 2018 JK models. I’m seeing about $5000 below sticker on those.

I don’t even care what I get for the Boxster at this point. I’ve had the car for 12 years, and until recently It’s been a good car. And really a water pump and window regulator after 120k is nothing to complain about.

Do it! I love Jeeps, and the new JL looks really nice.

Get the hard top when you buy new, it’s actually cheaper to get the dual top option and they are hard to find used. It greatly increases the functionality and they are way nicer in the winter and on the highway. Also keeps your stuff from getting stolen with a pocketknife. Removal is easy if you get a hoist designed for a Jeep too.

Get the hard top. Every one I have owned I either drove topless or with hard top.

Running down the freeway in a pup tent is no way to travel. Hardtop will make enjoying the jeep so much easier.

I think the jeeps are cool. I would never buy one though. Only a few dedicated trails are "jeep trails", and none are the type you would bring a new truck to unless you like to pinstripe a perfect paint job with branches... Any serious offroad guy is going to have a dedicated trail rig, and then they are usually rolled a few times and welded diffs. It's a cool culture, and the new jeep's have seem to hit on a rhetoric of go anywhere, do anything crowd; from the normal daily driver appliance beaters.

Yep, a re-do of the Scrambler they had for a while in the 80s, iirc; I always liked those but their rarity makes them pricey on the classic circuit.

The Wrangler is a love/hate vehicle, and the most-returned (sold within a year) vehicle sold in the US. People think they'll be fun, then discover they hate the lack of creature comforts. There's a used car dealer down the street from me and they always have a wide selection of 1-2 year old Wranglers.
