My 15y/0 daughter says she wants to meet a boy at the movies on Fri. No problem, says the wife and I. However, how about we pick him up and drive to the movies. We like to meet the parents of her girl/boy friends when possible.

Strong resistance from my daughter, the boy has told her that he fears his mom may say something offensive to me/my wife. We are puzzled, it would seem strange for a stranger to insult you in this setting. We suspected that the mom was a drunk, had Tourettes, was a horder etc. We held firm in our request to at least acquire the phone of the mom to exchange texts with the mom.

My daughter finally came clean. Come to find out the mom is not a drunk but a racist. The Hispanic mom didn't want her son dating a white girl. The mom knows my kids race but they were afraid to intro the parents because the mom's racist views.

We laughed it off. What can you do? I told my kid we were getting our MAGA hats and "Build the Wall" t shirts and going to the boys house to get him for the movies.

People never ceases to amaze.

From my experience, most parents assume their kids will ultimately marry people from the same race, religion, culture, values, etc.. It does not always work out that way and takes adjustment. It does not necessarily mean that they are racist. They just had always expected their grandkids to look like them...and anything different takes getting used to. It does not necessarily mean they believe their race, religion, etc. are superior.

I'd go and meet her anyway. Your daughter should see it so she know's what she's in for. Should be a good lesson for her.

Don't need to meet the parents. It's only the movies.

Nothing is going to happen and daughter is being VERY honest. Most kids would have said that she is meeting all of her girl buddies for a movie + McDonalds.

It's not just race, try dating an Italian / Jewish / Asian etc.... person when you are not whatever that that is.

My stepdad is Italian.

His family is not complete old school but hung onto a lot of "tradition"

Every Sunday at his moms. Men playing cards, women in the kitchen cooking a huge meal. Kids kicked out doors.

Same routine over and over.

If you are not raised in it then you almost can't adjust.

The thought is that keeping it "among your own kind" reduces the likelihood of friction.

I dunno. I was mentor for an Italian exchange student (graduate level - he was 22). He was over here laying pipe like the world would never have enough dark-haired short people. I asked him if he'd found a girl he could be serious with. He told me he would never marry an American because American girls are such sluts.

Seems there are several levels of "...ism." Not good enough to associate with. Good enough to talk to, but not good enough for friendship. Good enough to bed, but not good enough to marry. etc.

I have to study up on my lexicon of worldwide derogatory terminology. Innocent as I am, I thought a spic was Puerto Rican. I had to google it. Puerto Ricans are PRs. Spics are people like you.

I split the difference - married a Puerto Rican with pale skin, blue eyes, and red hair. Her older brother is the typical olive skin and black (well, gray now) hair, coal black eyes. Her sister is halfway inbetween for skin and eyes but not even she knows what her real hair color is she's been dying it for so long....

I had a very close Mexican friend, super handsome... when we walked into a bar I felt invisible to women... he was getting nookie all over the place.

I have a theory that some women are attracted to 'exotic' men (Europeans/Latino).

Growing up in Lost Angeles I always had a thing for Latino women, so much so I though I would marry one... ended up with a Korean gal.
