30+ year old pic of me being stupid with my old Aston Martin

Cleaning out old files cabinets I came across this. I think it was my brother and I driving to Mammoth Mountain in around 1980 or so, before I was married. It was a Kodak Instamatic, as I recall..I decided to "see what it would do" and he leaned over and snapped a picture.

After 38 years of ownership, I sure do miss it, but it was getting "stupid" expensive to maintain. I bailed, and I'm happy I did, sort of.....

That was probably a pretty uncomfortable feeling in that car!

Code brown at that speed?

Great looking car Hugh. I am sure it was an amazing vehicle to own. Not many people have owned one.

Probably like an XKE at that sort of speed, a little light in the front, a bit much for those bicycle wheels and tires on it.

Sizable Girling brakes up front, I bet it didn't weigh 3000#

Impressive top-end on that old car if the speedo is accurate @ that speed. Sometimes they can be off by 10mph or more above 100 but you were cooking, just the same.

I was just going through old files on computer and I have a couple taken at the exact same time as the second one, so I guess I was there.

Anyone who has legitimately attained those speeds on a public road will tell you how absolutely terrifying it is. Our road surfaces get really, really rough and uneven, the lanes get really really narrow, the crown in the road gets more pronounced, and all of that. And that's in a modern car. It gets even more exciting in an older, "period correct" car like yours. I'm surprised your brother was able to break the suction between his ass and his seat long enough to lean over far enough to take this pic....

Great picture!

I drove my Mercedes C-280 up some deserted 4 lane (Rt 53?) in Wisconsin flat out for 20 or so miles. Got things under the hood hot enough to cook off bugs and oil that had been there for years. The car didn't want to idle at stops until I shut it off and let it cool.
As Jeff says, 150mph on a highway will focus your attention!

At least you had a roof over your head when being stupid, if you want the crown you better be in a Targa with the roof off and the sound of a freight train roaring over your head.

Targa's are REALLY loud at that speed with the top off, aren't they?!

I did 130 on a 2 lane passing 7 of my friends many years ago in a moment of red mist, it kept me up at night for months after I did it. I can see the entire ordeal to this day like it just happened and in my mind I can see all the things that could have went wrong. As I type this I can feel the anxiety all over again.

I could have killed innocents and myself that day, all because I let an idiot in a Dodge SUV SRT get my goat. It was not a proud moment and I apologized to my friends who I passed later told them it would NEVER happen again. Some of them are members here.

Around the same time, I ran a Carrera GT on a 3 lane wide interstate to 175, never felt in danger and it never bothered me. I had no idea I went that fast until I looked down later and saw the top speed on my Garmin had reset to 175. The road was flat, smooth and straight, I was somewhere in North Florida and the stretch happened to be empty.

We did come up on some cars, I let up, the CGT drove like an idiot weaving in and out. I decided to chill and not push my luck.

I took a friend of my sister and brother in law for a ride in the Cobra and he asked what it would do. It was still pulling really hard at 145 but the front end was getting a bit light. That didn't bother him, but he mentioned getting rubber shifting into 4th at 115 did get his attention.

The wind at that speed is nuts.

Yeah, 6"x16" Pirellis on wire wheels, huge Girling discs front and rear (factory). IIRC reading once, at 6K it would suck up all 12 quarts of oil and spit it back out in 3 seconds. The earlier DB4s had a real problem with that in that gravity only works so fast and you'd lose connecting rods. I backed off pretty quick while keeping an eye on the oil pressure.
