What's a good memory card?

ARGHHHH!!!!!

hold on...

hold on...

hold on....

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRG GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(okay- that's better)

I have a san disk 64 gb microdisk and it just took a dump on me. All I get is "card error"

I just lost a bunch of good pics- including the crack on the frame of the 2-6-6-2 loco as well as a bunch of family pics.

This isn't the first time I've have a card error reading either- yet- they all appear to be this one type of card.

WHAT SHOULD I GET NEXT?!??!!??

They do wear out, Sandisk is usually a pretty reliable brand.

Looking at coffee cup of 'O memory cards on my bench we use Transend, Sandisk, Lexar.

I was going to suggest backing up your memory card but that is probably what you were doing when your card crashed.

64Gb is kinda large, I use 8Gb in my camera and get around +200 high rez pictures, I even have some 2Gb card just to keep things organised.

Have you tried a different card reader?

May I suggest you take a good look at the connector side of the card and card reader. Make sure no obstructions, bent pins, corrosion, etc.

Thanks all- This particular card was due for backup, and I've been looking at the backside for a bent contact/etc/ but to no avail.

It's just weird, I never had this problem until the microcards. All my SD cards and cf cards have done okay.

But these recent microSD cards have kicked my arse.

I'm almost wondering if there is some backfeed through the computer that is frying the recent cards. I just don't know!

Garage
I always unload all files from my card into my hard drive every few nights or so - sometimes daily when I have stuff I want to use right away. Then delete all files on the card. I never thought of using a card for long term storage. Longer than 1 week anyway.

Keep in mind there are a TON of counterfeit SD/MicroSD cards out there, and you are really not safe buying them anywhere else but a stocking authorized retailer.
That applies to Amazon as well, where I've purchased a couple fake SD cards via direct Amazon fulfillment (and not a 3rd party vendor). Of course, eBay is to be avoided for these as well.

Yeh. If it seems too cheap to be true, it probably is. There's tons of 4G or 8G microSD cards with altered firmware that makes them report to be many, many times larger - and then over-printed, sometimes even re-packaged (but usually not).

And they seem to work fine. Until you write over the end of the "real" storage, and they roll over into writing over the first files you stored on the card, directory structure and all.

Sometimes, even buying on the low end of a "reasonable" price, you'll get someone trying to scam you with junk.

The best way to tell for sure is to write blocks of data to the card and keep reading them back, verifying the blocks until you write the full capacity. There's a few programs that do this - I like scam-o-matic myself.

As an update-(a "mongo smart" moment on my behalf.)

I was driving home and had a 2cent idea.

Using the advice given here- that the card was experiencing difficulty overwriting itself because it was getting full- and it was,

I reformatted the card.

Works perfectly.

Thanks all.

And I will backup to HD on a much more frequent basis now!

Having to buy new card decision averted...As I am sure you will all rest easier tonight knowing this!
