BMW R9T Racer - OMG!

Stopped in to pick up chain lube for the Bonnie and saw this bike. New for 2017. Yep, sat on it and it fit this 58 year old frame like a glove.

Would someone please buy one, take the new bike depreciation and sell it to me?

Yeah its a neat piece. Sat on one at the bike show back in November. I've always liked that style of bike.

They dumped the aluminum tank for steel, conventional forks replace the original NineT's upside down forks, and the regular four-pot brake calipers instead of monobloc radially mounted ones.
I wonder why.

One guess...cost. I think it's got less rake than the original also.

Beautiful. Are specs available?

Looks way better than the new Thruxton or Ducati Super Sport. I bet it's the heaviest, least powerful, and all around slowest of the three. And likely the most expensive.

Beautiful, though.

Almost reminds me of a John Player Norton I helped a friend ride in a 6 hour endurance race in about 1978:

The Ducati Paul Smart has always been a grail bike....now mostly unobtanium. I think thats why the R9T Racer caught my eye.

But they put a neat little fairing on it. Nope, I'll stick with my r1200r.

Looks like a nice development for BMW. BUT they always get something wrong. Something always irks me about their "newer " designs. ( I guess I never got over Bangle Butt" .. which as it turns out was not Bangles fault after all. ) I would really like to photo chop the gas tank so its bottom is level and it does not have that 'high- kink' in it.. The level -ness of the bottom of the tank is what makes a cafe racer... Horizontality is really where its at and what makes a classic 'look'. Ducati is winning this game, with it's more exposed "space frame". The BMW other-wise certainly conveys a light-looking-two-wheeler which is also something a racer should be: light.

My opinion...

*As for cars, the E36 M3 is perfect and when were those last made '99?, E46 M3 is pretty as well I, have to admit..and the Z4, which was designed by a woman, has such beautiful lines, so much better than the Z3, which is actually a solid little driver, despite its funky hood -line.. ahhh, I should teach this stuff out @ Cal Arts.

The smart move is to look for the original R9Ts on sale, as the early adopters will be dumping them for the scrambler and café variants.

Out of the Box - BMW R NineT Racer ~ Return of the Cafe Racers
.
.
"As with the other R9T variants, the Racer still offers owners plenty of opportunity for custom tweaks including a BMW aftermarket pillion passenger kit, alternative tanks, spoked wheels, suspension kits and performance mufflers.

The Racer is available in one colourway of white with M racing livery but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a black version planned for the future."

A friend of mine bought an R nine and didn’t keep it very long. Apparently, the suspension was crap, especially the rear suspension.

For what that’s worth...

My Buddy and I rode our bikes up to Monterey for a couple of days earlier this week. Ive done it a few times on the PS, this was his first time on this bike. His only issues were the seat was a little hard. His bike only had 400 miles on it when we started the trip....Immediately after he bought the bike, he had new ohlins front and rear installed. Says it handles much better....it was very interesting comparing the two bikes...

Oh yeah, its a little over 350 miles up to Monterey from my house. We ride up thru Ojai, take the 58 to a Road called Rossis driveway, then the 41 to the coast, take old creek and santa rosa creek rodes back thru Cambria, then the coast all the way to Monterey....We grab a great bone in Ribeye for dinner, sleep great and get up the next morning and ride the reverse home.....Always during the week. Riding home we didnt pass 5 cars from Monterey to Ragged Point.....Fantastic Ride.

Awesome, Michael - I'm envious as can be. Beautiful ride on a pair of beautiful machines with a good buddy. Life just doesn't get much better.
