I saw a pair of Dunlavey’s in the pictures on that website that was linked earlier. A pair of those might get my attention...

Leaving the room equalization aside, half of the sound you hear is reflected, meaning the size of the room, the shape of the room, and the listening position are all important factors.

I you are looking for ambiance background music while you move about or a near-field listening position (small room) or even traditional equilateral triangle sweet-spot listening position.............all these factor into your choice.

If you are a smoker or have problems with dust and cannot avoid direct sunlight on the speakers then avoid most flat panel speakers with Mylar.

Some speakers are known for their Rock & Roll power and sound level capabilities, and may be the same speakers chosen for home theater applications where nuance and subtle transparency and sense of air or original recording space are secondary concerns.

To recap the selection criteria....................

1. Size and shape of room

2. Listening habits.

3. Types of music or H/T

For me I listen to all types of music and have been happy with my hybrid electrostatic Martin Logan - Aerius speakers for over 20 years.

A good friend had the DCM - Time Windows mentioned earlier in the thread, and they are a fantastic choice. The depth of stage can only be equaled with dipole/bipole and panel speakers.

For high on the wall whole room speakers I have Beovox RL units, also over 20 years old and holding up well.

one addition re the room: set the speakers out from the corners ~~3 ft. if you can, esp. important for dipole radiators

Brands:
DCM was great - I loved mine, until I got Vandersteens, after 20 years I got Maggies, then last year, newer, improved & bigger Maggies
JBL has a huge laboratory and lots of scientists & engineers on the payroll; they will have something xlnt at every price point

US Audiomart allows you to run a search bot for any item for sale used on various sites, and it will report back periodically when it finds something

No stands, no problem. Hang ‘em from the ceiling like my brother did...

+1 These have eye hooks for just that.

Supposed to be fired against the wall, I believe.

I did not notice any big difference between them and the Acoustimass.

Yeah, but didn’t you once tell me you’re damn near deaf? You know, a personal dynamic range of about 400 Hz?

:D

The weekly garbage truck, running down the street past your house, probably sounds pretty good.

Intercom speakers some guy once told me. :D

That's why I wanted your input for Shaun.

Hell, I can’t hear worth a crap either. Last time I took a hearing test I was surprised how lousy my hearing was. I would tell you how bad it was, but my memory also sucks, so I can’t remember the details...

^^^^ Bill...I'm keeping the 2.3s above and the pair I've had the longest....30 yrs :). To each their own ears....mine have dropped jaws for a long time...audiophiles and musicians alike....I love them...that's all that matters....

A Carver 4.0t I thought needed help....doesn't ;)

425 watts each channel ....if the LEDs on the amp even move....it's LOUD. But all those watts spread across that many powered speakers are really needed to due them justice....100w won't...can't :)

Doesn't matter...it's personal....I don't like subs and Maggies....so there ;)

Here's mine, not quite finished setting up from a recent move

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1557262842.JPG

Back in the day we used play them loud and long, all night parties w/ "Barn Ball" Volleyball using my 3 story barn as one side and in play. These days I only play Pandora as background music so 100 Watts a side is plenty, still have both big amps, 'just in case'

The interconnect is not really a power cable, it connects the 2 sides and does some voodoo to flatten the sound, I'd have to dig out the manuals to find out. Also have some tests from bak in the day.

I still love the L100s though even though I've burned out the crossovers, tweeters and all the foam has melted, fortunately I have an in in the industry that keeps the parts coming.

Old school...Carver/Sunfire....me like, any good one....

I wish I hadn't "given" some stuff away over the years....now :(.

Anybody got sumthin'?

Thread hijack over :)

I've been very impressed with a Chinese "clone" of the old Conrad Johnson tube circuit-think I paid 250 or so for it new.

The surround on the speakers is cloth. I think they changed that on later series.

I would change out the electrical components in the control box. The sell refresh kits for them. It works but has to be getting tired (I think?)

Fo' free plus shipping. I see sets with spiffy wood bringing a few hundred dollars.

If remotely interested, I can send pics.

Critics beat them up and others love them. They are definitely nostalgic.

Wait for javadog's input before deciding. :D

Hey Bob, are you saying you'll send me some speakers? If so, very kind of you. But I'm not sure where I can get some Keystone Light for you. :D

Let me know what you are thinking, sorry if I read this incorrectly.

Shaun @ Tru6 05-07-2019 04:56 PM

All in all, great recommendations, thanks everyone! Have googled a lot, looks like some great choices for reasonable money.

Shaun @ Tru6 05-07-2019 05:45 PM

Found these locally: https://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/ele/d/westford-polk-sda-reference-speakers/6869636031.html

I like Polks. The Monitor 7's sound great with my vintage Yamaha CA800 and a turntable, I keep the Monitor 4's in the shop, and I have enough of the matching RT series' to fill every slot on a 7.1 channel home theater. They all sound good enough for me. But I'm no expert.

If you want the best, by Meridian. We use to be a dealer and my former business partner is a huge audiophile.
Below are the speakers my buddy has.

DSP ...wtf :(?

It's all personal preference....my system works for me...and everyone who's ever heard it.

Even tube guys with a whopping 18 watts...and that rocks too....

Yes, but shipping would be silly expensive when far better options are available used close by.

Plus, I can't vouch for the integrity of them because I don't know speakers and even if perfect, better speakers are available for cheap.

If we were local to each other would be easy to just test on your amp.
