LLC in Montana

LLC in Montana: about how much does something like that cost? You know, from a car-guy perspective. Just curious.

I looked into it as well, about 1000 bucks. I think that's just for the LLC.

Have no experience in Montana, but in MN I started one last year and the filling fee was about $135

You want to check with the Secretary of State. https://leg.mt.gov/bills/mca/title_0350/chapter_0080/part_0020/sections_index.html

There are a bunch of companies that will set them up for you for a charge- I would be careful.

The county I work in had a small business advisor whose services were free and very helpful.

I cannot imagine how it could cost that much to simply incorporate in any state(?)

The bigger issue if you are doing it to register cars in Montana to avoid sales tax and license fees in CA., (or other states), is that the tax collectors in other states are hip to this strategy and really going after people who do this. The state revenue guys started showing up @ Cars and Coffee events in Atlanta and photographing Montana license plates on exotic cars and launching investigations, etc. If the owners lived in GA. and kept the cars there, (really operated them there), they prosecuted the owners for tax evasion and also forced them to register them where they live, pay fines, etc.

It's all on youtube, just do a search. Not sure If CA is as aggressive, there are so many plates here from other places that you could blend in more but Montana plates are a bit of a flag.

Similar deal in Washington State Denis.....Any LEO can enter your out of state plate with a time and location. After a tread is apparent, the owner can expect a little extra attention.

CA is going after them as well. My good friend had a house in Bullhead City, AZ. He bought and registered his three cars, a
boat, and RV through the AZ house. He sold the house two years ago and got a PO Box to maintain the registrations. It only took about six months to get the letter. He was lucky to escape CA FTB fraud charges. He did pay some fines if I remember correctly.

Isn't there something similar in Orygun and Florida?

I know tour buses are almost always Montana, Orygun or Florida plates.

My neighbor with the hot rods told me about it. I am not looking to save anything on tax since all my other cars are registered in CA and I am perfectly fine with that, but dealing with smog on the 930, well...

LLC in Montana

Ok, so the “game” is to get a Montana business LLC and set up a company that owns the cars so you can get a tag from Montana and avoid the expensive tags of the home state and inspections.

I was in California more than once in my 911. One time I was getting gas and a cop on a motorcycle pulled up and started to go in, noticed I have no front tag, he changed directions and walked to the back of my car. He saw my OK tags and just walked off.
I just smiled.
