Quietest refrigerator?
 

I have an older Kitchen Aid. I can hardly if at all know if it's running. And for reasons, that is a must. Question is, are there other brands as quiet?

I'm not in anyway looking at LG or Samsung, plus any other marginally constructed units. By contrast, I can't afford the hot rods they sell at the upscale appliance dealers.

Maybe one more question: where do you shop for things like this? In SoCal we have literally 100's of dealers from HD and Lowes to the aforementioned high end showrooms.

One advantage I have is that my fridge is counter depth and inside the cabinet face. Not a built in (for some reason those are priced out of this world). I can buy a dented unit as long as the damage is on the sides. That's why I come asking about the various brands that run on the quiet side.

My 10 yr old Samsung is a pretty quiet POS....and when it eventually dies....it will be even quietererer ;)

When we lived in Torrance we used to buy our appliances at Pacific Sales. They're actually owned by Best Buy now but offer pretty good deals/selection.
We got our latest fridge from Howard's if I recall. They will wheel deal with you whereas I don't think the bigger stores will as much. I'm not sure, it's been a while since we had to buy one.
As far as quiet goes, ours isn't that quiet but it isn't noisier than any others we've had either. It's a Kenmore but I don't think we bought it at Sears.

We have friends with a Samsung. Repair guy has to come all the way from San Diego as no one local repairs them.

Fridges are a challenge right now. There are indeed refrigerators on the market that are more expensive than a nice used car. Just insane, and they have some special water filter that has to be changed often, and can cost over 100 bucks, for a dang water filter.

We are lucky in that our fridge is 20 years old and built when there was some logic, and quality, and it does not even have a water filter.

So to answer you question, beats me. I do know a friend that started the hunt for an affordable fridge that did not have a insane expensive water filter for ice maker. In the end, he went to Craig's list and found a nice fridge that only got cool, and not cold. He bought it for $50 and got it home. He went on YouTube , watched a lot of the repair videos, bought a saddle tap, and some refrigerant and added it to get the right pressures and good refrigeration. Now about every two years he has to top it off just a little, but it works great and looks great.

He risked $50 for the used fridge, but it was a good gamble.

We got our 36 cu. ft. LG fridge from Pacific Sales in Brea, love that place.
I don't recall ever hearing that fridge making any noise.
I'm sure it does but not loud enough that I ever noticed it.

My 8 yr old Samsung is dead quiet and has been flawless since new. Beats the hell out of my last Maytag that needed parts every year for 10 years as stuff failed. Very low energy use as well.

Those Koreans built this one right.

The water filter for my fridge is supposed to be changed every 6 months, retail price is about $65
it also has a charcoal odor filter, $15 retail.

I can get both filters on evil-bay for about $20

I figure it's like color ink cartridges, they cost almost as much as the printer if you pay retail price.

Propane...silent.

My father has a 50+ year old fridge. No compressor, electric heater in place of the propane burner. Dead silent, but inefficient.

I guess unfortunately for you, the Consumer Reports chart shows the LG units (top freezer) to be the most quiet ones.

When I met my then wife to be 28 years ago she had a Harvest Gold refrigerator. She got it used when she bought her first house many years before, after she graduated college.

When we moved into this house 23 years ago w did not want that ugly old fridge in our nice kitchen, so I gave it to a friend that had a lake house he needed a fridge there. He sold that lake house a few years ago and the Harvest Gold fridge was working just fine, and still ugly.

I knew the gas refrigerator idea would pop up as I've been reading about dB levels. Common in motorhomes but not so much in residential. In previous threads here you folks have demonstrated a dislike for LG and Samsung yet they have some good ratings on the quiet front. I really like the the 10 YO Kitchen Aid for most reasons but the design of any side by side fridge is not to my liking. Since the advent for French door/bottom freezer models I have pined for one.

This may be my undoing — throwing out the good for the bad, in the long run. In general I've had good luck with appliances. I guess we don't abuse them as much as a younger family with a bunch of kids.

I always seem to have an anecdote about any given subject given my tenure on this earth. In 1983 I bought a foreclosure house with my then new wife (still married). We had been renting a house with appliances so had no fridge. I was on a job where a lot of remodeling was taking place and the Amana fridge was available at a really good price. Having moved in the new house with no fridge I was anxious to get this home. Only trouble was it was brown and my wife did not like it much. We didn't have a lot of money with most of it going into fixing up the repro house so it stayed and stayed. Wouldn't break. We lived there for 10 years. I don't remember, but we may have left it behind.

We've been in the present house since '98 and I can't remember what we started out with but I had to be a Goodwill special. Then one day I had a notion that I needed an all fridge, no freezer unit which from a storage and retrieval aspect is the best thing going. Again, the wife was not happy as with all the fridges in out lives non had an ice maker, a priority for her. I could care less about that feature. So, a relative was getting rid of the Kitchen Aid with all the bells and whistles.

Except one: accessibility. To get the milk carton out you have to move the juice, or something, you get the idea. The last thing that goes in is always in front of what you need next. So now looking for the ultimate fridge but on a budget. $7000 for a cold box don't cut it with me.

There only room fer so much ugly in a kitchen imo...does she have any regerts about her choich after all these years ;)?

Well she just gave me a big hug and kiss because I fixed a hose on the aerator for one of the pumps on he African Cichlid tank. It took me about 20 seconds, and a quick clip from a pipe cutter to get a good connection. I guess she is gonna keep me around.

I tease her that we should rip out the kitchen and just replace it with a catering kitchen and a wall of vending machines. She does not like that idea.

Hey Milt, when you find the ref. you need, let me know. I can order it for you and get you my discount through Pacific Sales. You can just pick it up from the store near you or I can have it delivered. I get a pretty good discount, usually more then their sales. I wait for the 4th sale if you can. That's the big one for them.

The new ones run pretty quiet. I just bought a Sam Sung for my mom. Its super quiet

My eyes!

When house hunting in 2004, we came across a house in my childhood neighborhood, with original mid-1960s GE appliances, all in pink. The living room carpet was lime green. House was in a Great neighborhood and selling for 3x median house price.
