				bike trailer modification help

I have a Burley Trailer for my bicycle. The Burley trailer has an attachment that one can add to the trailer tongue to convert the trailer to a stroller.

The trailer tongue is square tubing. The attachment is a wheel with a square whole to receive the tongue. My problem is the ID of the receptor is too small for the square tube. What I believe is my saving grace is the ID of the receptor has ribs that travel the length of the receptor, that if removed would allow the tongue to fit. How do I trim down the ribs?

On these burley/ yakima type things, they are made to fit easy peasy. They should not need macgyvering with a dremel/ etc... unless this is a craigslist barn find with some mismatched parts, it should all go together without modification. On my trailer/stroller, a similar fitting is there to hold a smaller diameter round push bar for behind the "stroller", but it is not to hold the wheel. Something doesn't seem right, but it's hard to tell without some more pics. |

I agree. I have sold Burley products.

The stroller is a Burley Solo. The wheel kit is for a Burley Solo...both picked up from different parties via ebay/craigslist. The wheel was new in packaging. The trailer is in great shape, but perhaps the tongue is not original.

The pictures don't help me understand the orientation of the parts and how they would need to fit. I understand you are saying the square tube section needs to fit within the receptacle with the ribs. Could you insert/mount a rod in the square tube that would readily fit within the ribbed part?

Edit - you added more pics before I typed my response. I didn't realize receptacle is plastic (I thought it was cast aluminum) AND that it actually was flexible and can be opened up. Take the part to someone with a bandsaw and those extra ribs could be cut off in two minutes.

That's got to be a mount for a different round bar setup. Makes me wonder if earlier "solos" has a round bar or vice versa

Here's a pic of the square taper setup... no biggie to ream out- pic out closest implement of destruction nearby and get to work. ![]() files

I think I am going to try to create something to connect the two together. Perhaps a dowel or something similar. If I can fit something in the wheel receiver, and in the tongue and attach it to both, I think I would be OK.

That wheel looks like exactly what I need...worse case scenario...$100.00 for a solution.

I was thinking about a dowel too- and wondering if the black round insert which comes out of the square arm could be pulled out to give enough length for the clamp to engage it instead. If not- just getting a round rod, drilling a hole in it and inserting it in the square arm like the black round insert currently does, just a longer length.. and youd lose the ability to hook it to the bike.

I always liked being able to switch between bike/ stroller on the fly. I used mine to haul my kid at the beach behind the bike, then would switch it to stroller to haul all the beach supplies/ stuff out on the beach. |

I think you have everything you need, it's just that your order of assembly is incorrect.

Undo the bolt shown in your second picture and remove that black piece from the sq tube. Put it into the piece shown in your first picture. I'm assuming it has a long enough 'neck' on it to then be put into the sq tube and the bolt reinserted in the hole. It looks like you have options as to which holes to use based on your third picture. In Leakys' picture I don't think the black highlighted piece actually goes into or around the sq tube. It is clamped to the round piece shown in darker grey which is the same piece as your picture #2 shows.

Looks like this part Should go around the round part in this pic that is inside the square part Is it possible that the square plastic part is butted up against the end of the square tubing?

Hmm, if this is any indication, then there isn't enough "neck"...
