Garage find!

An old client has offered me a mid seventies MGB. Been in his garage under a tarp for 17 years in the garage. Not sure if I’m crazy or not. Had one in my twenties when I meet my wife. Going to take a look this week. Anyone have any suggestions as what to look at? Thanks Glenn

Your bank balance.

Sorry. There are a lot of parts available, including complete body shells. They are easy to wrench on.
If it hasn't already been converted from the smog era carbs there is some performance on the table there.

Thanks for the comments Les. I’m trying to have wide open eyes and not about the nostalgia of having one when I was dating my wife. I’m going to look at it. Just not sure of rust areas on them. Will keep you posted.

There are lots of MGBs out there in good running condition for less than $10k.

Unless the project aspect is what you are interested in, it migh pay to look around at what other Bs are available.

I know of one that is nicely restored, running well and looking good that the owner would be happy to get 10k for.

Check on BAT.

Cheers Richard

You have to go see it. The last car like this I saw I wound up recommissioning for very little money, even though I had to go through every major system.

Rubber bumper or chrome bumper? Big difference in collectability. Early 1974 are chrome, late 1974 are rubber bumper.

Post pics!

1975porsche 05-26-2019 06:08 PM

I believe chrome bumper. Will post pictures.

LWJ 05-26-2019 06:37 PM

I know quite a lot about MGB's. Let's see pics. Rubber bumpers really aren't worth having.

Great, simple cars from 63 - 72ish. I had a 65. Really a joy.

1975porsche 05-26-2019 06:54 PM

Will post pictures of car after I see it this week, seems the owner won the car in some sort of draw back in the seventies. Drove it and parked it 17 years ago.

nvr2mny 05-26-2019 09:30 PM

I’ve had several too. Fun, easy cars. Moss Motors in Goleta, CA has just about everything for these cars.

smadsen 05-26-2019 09:34 PM

A later rubber bumper car can be back-dated to a chrome bumper car fairly easily. Then you just lower it about 6 inches.

Take a screw driver & a flashlight look everywhere for rust. As said before, all the parts are available, in fact I think you could build a new car from the parts bin. It would just be hideously expensive.

They aren’t quick, they aren’t valuable and they rust like crazy.
Lucas electrics - insert warm beer joke here - are installed as standard...
What’s not to love.

Full disclosure - I’ve only had one. Had a lot more Rumfs, which are the flip side of the same coin.

OP - here’s a primer

Buying an MGB

To clarify....what does “offered me a....” mean? Offered to sell or give you a mid-70’s MGB? Obviously that would alter the equation.

Would that be a back-dated later rubber bumper car, or a later-dated chrome plated back baby rubber bumper car? ;)

thingmon 05-27-2019 07:46 AM

If you get it... A friend of mine put a Honda distributor in his '68. Not sure how common that mod is.

Also, rising tide lifts all boats, so rubber bumper cars will eventually catch on.

No, they won't. :)

Jim Richards 05-27-2019 12:04 PM

^^^Agreed. When I was younger, I owned two Midgets with the chrome bumpers (1970, 1973) and they were fun cars to toss around on country roads. Too bad the rubber bumpers buggered up the looks of the latter cars.

Rubber bumper beauty buggerers

Get a Miata instead it is the modern version of Triumph/MGB . Drop dead reliable with good performance and great handling . Plus real world AC and a plethora of aftermarket parts available . And no need to carry a recharge of Lucas smoke with you 😉

daepp 05-27-2019 01:15 PM

I inherited a '65 - chrome bumpers, single cam motor (in pieces), trans (in pieces), straight, no real rust, CA car. I looked into restoring it - would cost far more than it would be worth when finished. It's a shame really.

I took this advice after selling my 87 Carrera last year. Even has a power retractable hard top. And noticeably quicker also. Cruise control? Yep. Heated seats? Yep. No regrets.

One of them is the shelves above the front suspension on the inside of the wheel wells. Road grime collects there, and festers....

We had a B for about twenty years, with many mechanical and road trip adventures.

oldE 05-27-2019 03:27 PM

Two years ago a fellow approached me as I got out of my first generation Miata and asked me about the cars. After a while he told me he was selling his MGB as he was tired of restoring it. The car was in great shape and I had seen it often in the area.
A few weeks later I saw him driving a third generation Miata. He said he didn't want to get out of the car.

Do you happen to own a rubber bummer car?

VincentVega 05-27-2019 07:16 PM

I like them, still have mine from high school. First engine I rebuilt. First carbs..... The car is shrinking somehow, I don't fit like I used to.

I've never heard of this...any more info?

I daily drive an MGA with a 3 main MGB engine. They can be made to be very reliable and are simple to tinker with.

1975porsche 06-03-2019 09:22 AM

No luck getting to see the car yet. Last week dad had a unfortunate fall that required 28 staples in his head☹️ It’s amazing how tough he is at 92. Most people I think would take time off , he is up getting on with life. Ct scan says he is ok. Wow just blows my mind. They don’t make them like that anymore!

It’s red and it’s mine. 1974. 19 years under a tarp, The house is sold , if I remove it this week $500.00 Canadian and it mine. It will be home Tomorrow. 😊

LWJ 07-08-2019 05:29 PM

Last year worth owning. Looks good.

masraum 07-08-2019 05:33 PM

porsche tech 07-08-2019 05:45 PM

WOW! Looks really nice and for that price you can't go wrong. Have fun!

dewolf 07-08-2019 06:16 PM

Bill Douglas 07-08-2019 06:27 PM

kanadary 07-08-2019 06:35 PM
