				Snake in the house!

I'm so proud of MrsWD. She left the hot tub went into the house while I closed up. She came back out and calmly said, "There is a snake in the middle of the floor." Sure enough, there was a 12" long milk snake in the middle of the room. I grabbed a piece of 1x8 that was in the garage and held it down. She whacked it with a shovel and tossed it over the cliff behind the house. In retrospect, I should have just picked it up and tossed it over the cliff, but the shock of finding a snake - any snake - in my house made me want to kill it with fire. She was so calm, cool, and collected. A lot of people would have totally freaked out.

Why the irrational fear of snakes? You are more afraid of snakes than my wife, and she has been bitten by a copperhead. Where is the rest of your furniture?

No, SHE killed it. In our house. I totally supported her actions, though as I said, in retrospect I should have just tossed it over the cliff.

Yes, you should have taken it outside and let it go. I'd say you mildly freaked out. That just proves how critters can be anywhere. My wife & I were sitting out front on our swing a few years ago. A young rattler came crawling over the lip of the bank. We sat there and watched it slither past us and go off into one of our Rosemary bushes. I commented to her that was one reason you didn't shove your hand into bushes around here. Later we went inside. I don't know where the snake went. In ten years here I've only seen five rattlesnakes, and one of those was dead. I did have a six foot racer in the parts bin in the garage. I took the parts bin outside, took a bunch of the casters out and dumped the snake out. I had to chase it to the back of the house, because it tried to go back into the garage.

Tough crowd. That picture was taken before we moved in. You made me go take a picture of the scene. This is what the room looks like now.

I just killed a bat. Same sort of reaction. It fell from the rafters. I thought it was dead. 5 minutes later, it is circling in the basement and coming at us .

I took it out of the air like Babe Ruth swinging that broom . Felt bad afterwards

Dirt from the shovel. No blood at all. Maybe he was just stunned.

12”? Like, 1 foot? You sure it wasn’t a worm?

We used to get little flower pot snakes in our pool. Just pick them up and set them in the grass and away they go.

It was a milk snake, and it wasn't in our pool, or on our patio - it was in our house. I don't mess with the snakes, skinks, chipmunks, spiders, bats, or mice that are outside my living quarters, but I draw the line of sharing my home with them.

I would have done the same if it was a spider. I'd break a shovel trying to kill a spider.

Why the fear of bats, wasps or spiders?

I had a massive fear of wasps as a young man. I was 21 helping a buddy and his dad shovel fish poop out of trout farm ponds in Sandy Lake, PA. They showed me the hatchery. Inside there was a wasp on the wall not three feet from me. Probably a vicious mud dauber. I froze up. Buddy's Dad cracked a little smile, reached out and crushed it between his fingers. That really helped me chill out on a big picture scale for the rest of my life.

I get it, in my old house with 18 acres butt up on another 1,000 acres of wildlands, I killed about a dozen rattlers in my space, on the deck, one in the house. I'd see them 1,000 feet from the house and leave them alone. I made about a dozen rattlesnake belts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/480552-making-rattlesnake-belt-warning-potential-gagging-photos.html

The gopher snakes I left alone. I got derided for killing a gopher snake in my house here at around midnight years ago. Like in the middle of the night, after being in the spa, I'm supposed to "decide" what kind of snake it is under my mother in laws bed. BTW, like I said, I killed a rattler in my hallway once.
