The first class ticket (actually business first- it's American Airlines) would have cost $6,500. No one would give it up for $1,500. Unrestricted coach costs more than that.

The guy he asked was in coach, just sitting in an exit row w a lot more leg room.

It's not like some behemoth smothered a normal person by having fat flaps infringe on other people's space...

Looking at this another way - The guy set a limit on how much he was willing to pay? ...and it wasn't an obscene amount....

Don't we all set limits to what we are willing to pay?
Maybe he didn't have more on him?? Cant barter with paper checks, people won't go for that, you gots to dangle the greens in front of their nose for such deals
