CA DMV question

I bought a car and trailer from a seller in CA last year. It is an older couple that lives there part time. Long story short she couldn't find the title for the trailer when I left. We've been exchanging emails periodically. Me reminding her to take care of it, her telling me about her various issues :-)

She finally tells me it is found and solved. I end up getting a CA Permanent Trailer Identification Card (not title) in my name with the name of my city misspelled. I live in Washington State not CA.

Will I end up getting the title mailed to me so I can transfer it? I know each state DMV is different.

I think vehicles coming into ca have to be done at Dmv , but vehicles going out can be done at aaa .
Aâä is a MUCH better option , so much so some people are members just to avoid dealing with ca Dmv offices ....

Jerry, this is a question for your DMV or licensing office, (WA. specific thing). Ask them what you need for a title and if you're good to go.

IDK about WA but trying to get a hold of a CA DMV live person is virtually impossible. I can see why a AAA membership has its advantages beyond roadside help.

My take on the situation is that either the intended registered owner, or their own state DMV can order a title trace and duplicate docs sent for a fee.

However, the OP has a "CA Permanent Trailer Identification Card" whatever that is. With that and a bill of sale, it should be sufficient to obtain a title.

He might have everything he needs for a WA. state title on a trailer already. Kind of impossible to know w/o asking someone at the WA. DMV or licensing shop, WA. has these unique shops everywhere where you can conduct DMV business.

I've belonged to AAA forever and do most DMV transactions there but sometimes you need to go to a real DMV. It's a myth that going to the DMV in CA. is always a nightmare-I just renewed my DL @ DMV in person last week and it was a breeze w no appt. I brought a good book expecting a 2 hour sit and it was more like 10 minutes.

It takes a long time to get an appt. @ CA. DMV in Los Angeles, I just went to the easiest one according to a google search and it was a piece of cake. I can't say which one because I don't want to promote it but it was also 10 minutes from work.

Hopefully you won't have to deal with CA DMV. You will not speak to a human on the phone and it will take a month to get an appointment. Appointment is a must have to go there. It is the difference between spending half an hour and spending the better part of the day.

I would suggest you try to solely deal with the WA DMV. I am quite sure it is run better.

Well, title showed up a few days after I posted this. Not sure how that works but now I have a CA title in my name. I'll just go with it. It only gets used a few times a year, should be fine and I avoid paying tax on the value in WA.

Here you go Richard. 914-6 tribute built in CA for PCA solo events several years ago. Needs some re freshening as it has been sitting and rolled out for shows there locally by an older couple. Was built with a 914-6 donor car so has the dash and other bits. Almost too nice cosmetically to race wheel to wheel so we will see how that goes. I've been so busy selling a few things, daughter getting married and work getting in the way of fun I haven't done much with it.
