Any Recommendations for getting rid of moss on roof?

My roof is fairly new at 7 years old with 50yr asphalt shingles. It's starting to get some moss on the shingles. Anyone have a recommendation for getting rid of this? I don't want to spray something that runs off and kills my plants on the ground. I also thought about using a pressure washer but don't want to damage the shingles.

i used HD deck cleaner with the pressure washer on medium pressure.
This worked well, then a roofer told me a secret.........
install a strip of copper sheathing under the top cap, it should show about 3 inches.
The miniscule copper element in the runoff will prevent moss and lichens from growing.
Works like magic.........no more washing the roof!

Wow, moss on a roof in Fresno?
Never would have thought you'd get that kind of problem there with as hot as it gets.
This must be on a north facing roof which is shaded almost constantly by trees, if I was guessing.

I bet that copper trick works slick, Paul. Just like driving a copper nail into a tree if you want to kill it.

use a spray with iron sulphate etc. in it - should only kill the moss, which is very sensitive to ferrous compounds rel. to vascular plants

that will kill it; not remove it - pressure washer will do that but abrade the shingles somewhat

a strip of Cu along the roof line works great long term ($$$)

maybe trim some trees to get more sun in those areas - moss will grow if the environment favors... moss

This product has worked for me for decades. Beware of copper, can corrode galvanized or aluminum gutters. This a zinc compound...but the runoff can damage lawn grass. Never had any shrub damage, but won't say it couldn't happen.

Here in the PNW, we get moss. Lots of it.

Iron and copper are typical remedies. You can also use laundry detergent sprinkled on the roof. This may be problematic with the down stream water shed. Not certain of your situation.

It works very well. It will kill the moss but then you may wish to blow / wash the moss off.

start with some name calling about them being "primitive" plants and how they suck compared to angiosperms

While very effective, and much less expensive than products marketed as moss killer, laundry detergent will degrade the asphalt in the shingles. Over time, the granules will begin to lose adhesion and end up in the gutter.

Spray and Walk Away. I’ve used it on a couple of projects. Apply with a pump sprayer, so little to no run off. It may take weeks for the moss to go away, but it doesn’t come back.

Moss is a moisture issue similar to mold. Cut down all your trees so you get more sun light, change the PH buy a commercial moss control agent which changes the PH.

I live in a very heavily tree'd area. You can slightly tell in my photo above.

The moss on my roof appears mostly dead as we are now having summer heat (100+degrees). So now, it's more like a crust at the edge of the shingles but it will become slimy once winter shows up. I also have a lot of brick walkways and patio which always get moss in the winter. I've tried roundup but the moss comes right back.

Bleach mixed with a little dawn dish soap, spray with low pressure. The bleach will kill the moss, the dish detergent gives the bleach a clinginess so that it won’t run off quickly. Rinse with low pressure. There are videos on YouTube explaining how to do this.
