Here’s a view that shows the low mounted tail surfaces on the Thud. My dad (Ranger Bob) will be 88 in November and we go to the museum every Father’s Day weekend. He is a wealth of knowledge on military history and frequently has some information to add that the docents didn’t know.

Just had a Canso (Catalina) fly up the Valley. Last time I saw one in the air must have been 15 -20 years ago. I hate to think of 16 hour patrols in those.

Best

There is a lot to unpack in that photo...I think that is an MH-60S.

Chocks still on the deck, appears no dynamic components were "turning" (main rotor blade would have chewed up some concrete) or this would be a yard sale.

That and the "pegs" to inspect the tail rotor are still out...they would be in for flight.

Interesting.

2022 storm in Norfolk, 10 helo's blown over.
Sound in vid is annoying.

I would have thought they tied down the aircraft between missions?

A link From the above post, talk about a F18 blowing off a carrier in the Mediterranean a couple years ago. I would’ve thought that would’ve been tied down as well.

Does an A-10 really have a "titanium tub" for the pilot to sit in? What kind of hit can it actually take? Can it take a .50 cal explosive or armor piercing round?

The A-10 is equipped with a titanium tub – a sort of armored cocoon that envelops the pilot for protection. This feature is officially referred to as the bathtub and is a testament to the aircraft's design, which prioritizes pilot survivability above all else.

The bathtub is crafted from titanium armor and is specifically designed to withstand significant impacts, including direct hits from up to 23 mm cannon fire. It's also capable of enduring single strikes from projectiles as large as 57 mm rounds. The robustness of this titanium shield is so remarkable that it accounts for about 6 percent of the A-10's total weight, weighing in at a hefty 1,200 pounds.
It can take a hit from a .50 caliber explosive or armor-piercing round, the bathtub's resilience is such that it can indeed withstand rounds of that caliber. The Warthog's cockpit glass is also bulletproof, capable of withstanding up to a 23 mm projectile, which covers the .50 cal rounds you're curious about. This level of protection is crucial, given the A-10's role in close air support missions, where it often flies low and becomes vulnerable to ground fire.

The A-10's durability doesn't stop at the bathtub. The entire aircraft is built to survive. It features redundant flight systems, self-sealing fuel tanks, and a structure that allows it to return home even after sustaining considerable damage. This ruggedness has earned the A-10 a legendary status among military aircraft for its ability to take a hit and keep flying.
The A-10 Warthog is a flying fortress, designed to bring its pilot home safely from the most perilous situations. The titanium tub is just one of the many features that make the A-10 a true survivor in the skies.

I had to jump back into the way back machine to think about that: I can't remember during squadron tours in San Diego if we ever chained the helo's:cool:

Flying tours in Pax River, sort of; the Sikorsky factory, sort of as well...all weather related and not as a routine in normal weather.

A friend of mine's son was there and we are going to chat tomorrow...the Squadron Duty Officer (SDO), which rotates daily, according to my friend, got puree'd.

I just got off the phone with the Aircraft Commander, a former Marine, of this 53E when I took this picture in Colorado. I had to pee.

Not a tie down in sight:D

Technical Question for you Pilots or Mechanics.

I have a application where I'd like to EGT instrumentation on a twin 1000 four stroke ATV/SxS. Planning on buying a used head pipe to weld in a couple of Bungs for K-type Thermocouples near the heads exhaust port. Would be great to have A/F ratio per cylinder too. Would be cool to use a Aircraft panel gauge with twin needles to easily monitor both cylinders at same needle levels, and when one starts to get too hot it shows the differential. Amazon has Thermocouples and used Avionics EGT twin needle gauges. Anyone help point me in the right direction with websites or links would be fantastic.

This is my SxS with 2200 trouble free miles. I run a conservative Tune on it. Blew up the motor 200 miles with cracked and breakout piston rings. It's ALWAYS the right cylinder that blows in these machines. Dealer rebuilt the motor under warranty. It lasted 200 miles before the right piston let go in major fashion. It's simply not there in the cylinder (iceberg size chunks in the lower case. I put my bore scope down the spark plug hole and was greeted by my Wrist Pin, Con Rod, and crank. The piston has simply vaporized and disappeared. Back to a different dealer for rebuild once again under warranty, and as an Electrical Engineer this time I want FACTS and DATA, not rumours or opinion for how my motor is feeling that day. Rich/Lean/Cold/Hot.

Here is where I used to buy most of my ultralight stuff. I have a dual egt I installed in my rotax 447 powered ultralight. It was probably 20+ years ago but I think I bought it here.

https://onlinecatalog.advancedpowerplant.com/6/

It used to be called Leading Edge Airfoils and they were a distributor for Rotax engines.

I have one of their volt gauges and a dual CHT gauge installed in my 911. Nice product, reasonably priced, works well.
