The CFM-56 engines were done by Cammacorp I believe in Tulsa Oklahoma. They converted just over 100 airplanes. All the mods. and the new engines greatly improved the "eight". Unfortunately it also made it a beast to fly. Not the best handling airplane. I flew the 71's and 73's for 11 years.

Oops - NM. From further reading: “ What appeared to be a parachute was seen hanging from a palm tree near the crash site; that Cirrus SR22 has an onboard airframe parachute. Pingree said there were no eyewitness accounts of the parachute being deployed.”

I wonder if there will be a new type of hybrid jet engine introduced:
Electric or mostly so at slower speeds and then transitions into high bypass and slow recharging after reaching constant altitude. |
Cousin is a Delta airline pilot. Regional Delta. He is out in a couple days as he's 65. Flew to Cle last night with his wife onboard and we had dinner.
He flew mainly C130's/C141's for the Air Force in the way back. I asked him if he had any close calls. He did and I am hoping for some clarity on this. In Norway, 1980-ish, a string of C130's dumping paratroopers along with Norwegian aircraft doing same at 2000 feet. A show for King Olaf. Plane in front had some kind of vortex off the wing tip that messed them up but I don't know terminology. Cousin was co-pilot. Pilot throttled back engines on one side and maxed the two on the other side fast. Their plane instantly nose dived and he said "There were windows, I could see the ground, I thought it was over" Pilot pulled out at 1,000 feet and swears he saved them all. Cousin also talked about left side and right side wing tip vortex and what your supposed to do. Help a layman understand. |
Wing tip vortices are dangerous horizontal "tornadoes" that emirate from the wingtips rearward. They are most pronounced when the aircraft is slow and "dirty" (full flaps). They can roll a following aircraft inverted quickly. Here is a tragic, but good video on them and an surprising producer.

Search for the Challenger Jet damage occurred after they hit the vortices from an Airbus A380 in the Middle East. Here is another good video. Finally after 20 years of flying I bit the bullet and bought a set of BOSE A20’s with Bluetooth.

The music stops if there is a ATC or other aircraft to listen to. In the middle of nowhere, not much talking going on. More than once I forgot to punch the noise cancellation button for a few minutes. If sure makes a big difference when it is on. |
