The window of opportunity is VERY small.

Hence the recommendation to use ALL available runway for take off. even if you normally have the extra power to take off at 1/3rd.
Taking all of it could be the difference in altitude and speed if you run out of power just past the end of the runway.

When I first read that I thought about a 172 lumbering down all 6000' of runway, then I read it a second time and realized you meant take off from the end, not an intersection. Some days my brain don't work so good.

Anyway, if anyone gets a chance to rent or buy this. Do it. Good documentary. In the beginning Harrison Ford is talking to Sean D Tucker and Bob Hoover and calls them matures because Harrison crashed twice with far fewer hours flying time.

Good stuff. I've seen him fly several times. All in the Shrike.

flipper35 11-17-2020 01:29 PM

He did awesome shows in the Shrike!

Bob Hoover and Leo Loudenslager were may favorites back in the 90s. There was this up and comer back then that looked like he had potential. Flew the 1-800-COLLECT sponsored plane. Anyone remember that plane?

Kirby and the rest are good, but Leo was like a caffeinated squirrel in his modified Stevens and the BD-5J.

Flew hard, died young (50's), on a motorcycle.

He was a stickler for weight. Colin Chapman was a huge slacker in weight reduction compared to Leo.

They were nearly untouchable. One of the A-12s going over North Vietnam took a piece of shrapnel during a mission.

"This time as he approached the capital city, the North Vietnamese fired at least six missiles at him. Looking through his rear-view periscope, Sullivan saw six missile vapor trails climb to about 90,000 feet before converging on his aircraft. He noted the approach of four missiles, and although they all detonated behind him, one came within 100-200 yards of his plane.

He continued the mission and landed safely, but the post-flight inspection crew made a surprising discovery: two small pieces of metal had penetrated the plane’s lower right wing and lodged against the support structure by the wing’s fuel tank. The fragments were not warhead pellets, but may have been part of the debris from one of the missile detonations near the plane."

John Monett designed and sold this beauty, home built, pylon style racer. I love its chocolate bar airfoil. VW engine in it. http://www.sonexaircraft.com/press/i...image_5286.jpghttps://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/graphics/SONERAI.jpg

Easy to recover from a spin as well. I always thought of it as a ND Miata in the air. A bit heavy but flies well.

Part 1 of an EXCELLENT 8 part series. I thought the episode on turbo-supercharging was especially informative!

One of the episodes of Dogfights a BF019 pilot unloaded his guns into a P47 and finally flew up alongside and saluted the P47 pilot.
