$1000 for a replacement side door mirror!?$!?$

OMG... a close friend knocked the side mirror off her 2015 Lexus RX350 this morning. Lexus wants $1000 for the mirror! Used ones are $500! It's a folding mirror with blindspot monitoring, but I would have thought this would be a $100-$200 part.

She's so upset she's talking about selling the car and buying a beater Honda.

Welcome to modern cars. I don't know exactly who wants all this wizardry , but it is surely not me .
My buddies M benz side mirror got water in it and it took out the whole Bus. Car would not start, run, and was unable to even get it out of park to be towed. All due to going through a car wash, and water intrusion in the door mirror .

That's about right. Is it for the entire mirror assembly or just the glass? A friend had to order replacement mirror glass for a customer's Mercedes with the blindspot monitor. Glass alone was $700, his cost.

That is just insane. No way that should happen. I certainly believe it, but Mercedes should know how to design electronics that don't fry on a car when an outside component gets wet.

Wifes Lexus was in a minor fender bender. Passenger headlight had to be replaced. Self leveling light, $1500 from the dealer.

My old tundra - 07 or so - needed an $850 mirror when a bus ran into it.
That was 12 years ago.
This isn’t new.

Here in the San Diego area they have a "pull it off yourself" salvage yard and it used to be $1 to go in, not sure now. You get the part(s) you need and depending on how "poor" you look the girl in the window at the administration trailer will give you the bill. Usually things are CHEAP! Should have them in your area?

So my good buddy had a little incident with his trailer. He had to get his new to him SUV repaired at his expense. He gets the car back and goes to the trailer repair shop that is fixing his trailer. While there, his SUV gets hit out in the parking lot. Looks like someone tried to pull in too close and messes up the left rear fender.
I ask if he got his car back after a week and a half. No.
Turns out the bumper got dinged enough to mess up the rear driver side radar sensor that works with the reverse automatic braking system and the blind-spot detection so it had to go back to the dealer to get that calibrated. When they went to blend the paint they wanted to remove the roof rail since a part of the fender up there got bent some and needed body work. Well, the roof rail is put on from the INSIDE, so they have to take out the headliner to do that.
To get the headliner out you have to remove the windshield. Once they got that out, they noticed a chip which wouldn't allow them to reinstall it, so, off to the dealer for a new one, oh, and calibration of the EyeSight Safety System as well.
He's about beside himself with all this. But, he loves the car.

Mrs. Lee knocked the passenger side mirror off her 2014 BMW X1. I found a used one on eBay for $265. She *****ed about that money like no other. And my labor to install was free. You have to take the whole effing door apart (speaker cables, lock, handle, door skin, etc) to get to the bolt that holds that mirror on.

What if it was not a failure? What if it is designed that way on purpose?

My 2011 Duramax is stuck in 4mph limp mode. Fuel tank has been refilled. DEF tank refilled. I have tried everything the owners manual describes to no avail. I have even disconnected the batteries for several minuets and nothing resets.

I like lower tech cars. I don't want backup cameras, blind spot monitoring, nav systems, on star, none of that stuff.

I want as analogue as possible, ABS I guess, but I have driven more years without it than with it.

I'll agree except for the backup camera, never thought I'd use them but they are very handy. When used with good ole fashioned backup skills, the two make it easy as butter to backup quickly and accurately without curbing anything.

The thing to understand about the cost is that it is likely a self-dimming mirror. Which is much like an LCD screen... it is actually and LCD where it auto dims bright headlights by blacking out the primary mirror surface. If you want to go cheap there are usually non-dimming versions.
