Adjustable Beds

This question came up in the snoring / sleep apnea thread and didn't get answered, as far as I could see.

Seems like between my wife and I, we've had a number of issues that might be helped by changing our sleeping position. I get a sore lower back if I sleep on my back, I think the current mattress is too soft for me. She gets acid reflux if she eats anything spicy, and has to prop herself up to sleep. I like to watch tv in bed sometimes, even though I know "they" say you're not supposed to. I'm also considering ditching the king mattress and getting two twin xl mattresses. That way I can get a firmer one, and we could move the ends up and down independently so we wouldn't disturb each other.

I'm looking for anyone who has experience with an adjustable bed. Every time I say that phrase I add the word "Craftmatic" in my head, and it makes me think of old people, but I guess I'm getting there.

We have a Tempurpedic with the adjustable base, so you can raise the head or raise the tail. Wasn't cheap, but we love it. In hindsight we wish we'd bought the one where each side adjusts individually.

Yes that can help - but "there is no substitute" for an MD in this specialty & a sleep test, then CPAP or have them break your jaw and move it....

I had to buy an adjustable bed frame for my Sleep Number mattress for when I was to recover from shoulder replacement. First of all, I can't sleep on my back so that's a plus for you. I use the adjustable back every night for reading or TV. If you can sleep in a lounger chair, this is for you.

Do you have a queen or king? I made a thread - "Can you cut a tempurpedic mattress in half", and the answer is yes. A king will have two bases linked together via a cable. Remove that cable and they operate independently.

I can sleep most anywhere, except I found I can't sleep in a car if my wife is driving. Too terrifying!

It looks like several of the mattress company's bases are all made by Reverie or a couple other manufacturers, and they seem to be a lot less on Amazon. Are corners cut on those models, or do the mattress manufacturers mark them up?

Well, I'm f-ed.
Took the wife mattress / base shopping last night.
Laid on a bed, messed with the controls until I found something comfortable.
Blue = wife.
"I can't sleep like this"
"Then we have to get split mattresses"
"I want my mattress"
"They don't make that model anymore, try this one"
"Well this doesn't feel the same"
"It doesn't have a sheet on it, and the reviews say it is the same firmness as the one we have"
"Well I don't like it"
"So try another one"
"Why can't we keep the one we have"
"I can't sleep on it, it hurts my back"
"Well why didn't you say something during the trial period?"
"We've had it 2 1/2 years, now I need something different"
"I want my mattress"

At that point I walked out of the store.
I guess I'll be staying in the guest room a while longer.

A few commodities like mattresses (like most furniture, rugs, etc.) and jewelry have a huge mark up. Not buying a mattress during one of the major sales is a mistake. Dept stores seldom negotiate. I have negotiated jewelry though at a dept store because I called them on the mark up vs. "sales" prices. Since all these sales folks are on commission it is wise to know the enemy.
