Must a police officer sign a speeding ticket?
My wife got pulled over in rural Eastern Washington state for doing 10 over.
Nothing on the ticket is written by hand. Everything is printed. Looks like a place for the officer to sign, but it's still blank. Is this an obvious invalid ticket? |

I'll bet there's a badge number printed on it somewhere.

It's still valid. I got one in Garfield County a couple of years ago, generated by and printed off of the computer in the patrol car. Fortunately, he had apparently not cleared the previous vehicle's vital information (make, model, license plate, registered owner, etc.) from some of the fields, so I got it tossed by mail. Apparently a computer noob...

I'm not sure if this trick works where you are, but if you overpay the ticket they can't take the money. And you are not in trouble as you "paid" it. It creates lots of trouble for them.

I don't think there's any getting out of a ticket because of what the officer wrote or omitted on the ticket. They can lie and say you were going slower than they clocked you, and that's perfectly acceptable. The last one I got was absolutely for a car other than mine. But I was polite, took the ticket without any backtalk, went to court and cop didn't show, so I skated.

Still here

Of course it's valid.
If you try challenge it in court, the traffic court judge who sees these officers all the time will tell you "So what if it's unsigned ?". |

I was in traffic court a couple of years ago and a couple of people tried the "old" street wrong date wrong bla bla bla.
Judge laughed at them and said pay your fine dickwad.

Yes it's valid. But you'll probably want to go to court anyway to cut a deal. In which case, don't say anything about problems with the ticket. Just be nice and humble and ask to plead it to a non-moving.
I got a ticket in the N. Cascades Nat Park on hwy 20. The officer wrote on the ticket that the location was hwy 410, which happens to be in Mt. Rainier Nat Park 100 miles south. The judge was not swayed by what he called my "typo" argument. |

Okay, guys, we just went ahead and paid the fine.
Neither one of us has been pulled over for so long, one minor offence shouldn't affect our insurance rates. Sure don't want to go that far for a 3-minute court appearance. Maybe should have handed it off to an attorney, but just sent a check to be done with it. Yes, Bob, we finally escaped the constantly damp, dreary, gloomy, grey skies West of the Cascades. Landed in an absolutely beautiful spot in Idaho. Stunning view in front, National Forest in the back yard, couldn't be happier. Hiking/backpacking, Kayaking, Swimming, Snow skiing, Mountain biking, Boating, We're right in the middle of everything outdoors. Did I mention we kinda like it here? I'd love to see the progress of the little coupe sometime. I'll let you know when I'll be through the area. If convenient for you, I'll stop by. |
