Mebbe the wasps/hornets I kill are wimps...but I've never had a single problem with modest size hornets nests the size of a bowling ball, and the Spectracide COMMERCIAL stuff, purchased at my Stihl/Scag dealer (not Lowes/HD) just works. Drops 'em....instant death...but I still run like a scalded dawg....just in case :). Yellow jackets have taught me well....they don't like flashlights much ;).

Crowbob 08-04-2019 05:02 AM

The local depertment of natural resources obliterates bald-headed hornets' nests on sight with some kind of chemical. Nuking them with fire from space is completely reasonable.

Ive taken down a few of those with just a garden hose. It is my offensive, and defensive weapon at the same time. I just keep sprayin' and don't let anything get near me .

rfuerst911sc 08-04-2019 06:47 AM

Unfortunately a water spigot is too far away to use a hose .

Hair spray is NOT the way to do it. Hair spray will give you a 18-24" big fireball. Do you really want to get that close?

I haven't do it in years, but (very specifically) Thrust Quick Start Fluid (20 years ago, at least) would give you a 4-8' stream of fire. Much better to be farther away.

Can you rent or borrow a honey badger?

Start a small, controllable fire in the vicinity and call out the Fire Department.

herr_oberst 08-04-2019 08:21 AM

Water balloon gun. Just sayin'.

svandamme 08-04-2019 11:24 AM

ohhh I like that

rfuerst911sc 08-04-2019 11:39 AM

The wife went and bought a spray can of death ! So tonight if it isn't raining I will do the deed. My plan is get close maybe 2 ' away and load up the entrance then start the retreat while continuing to empty the can . Not ruling out running and screaming like a girl !!!

svandamme 08-04-2019 11:55 AM

vid plz

Just be sure to get it all on video for us!

in the non-dystopian future, we will all have robots to take care of these things

in the dystopian future, we will all be tortured and killed by mutant hornets

rfuerst911sc 08-04-2019 02:30 PM

Let me be perfectly clear , there will be no video for you guys or the ER staff !!!

island911 08-04-2019 02:45 PM

Yeah, I would be thinking flaming arrow or some such. Napalm from a trebuchet ?

At minimum wear a bunny suit over some thick clothing.

Edit, can you push some dry ice up to the edge? The cold CO2 would cascade over.

KFC911 08-04-2019 03:04 PM

I just use what the pro's (time is money) use:

Spectracide Commercial Wasp & Hornet Killer

Dielectric Breakdown Voltage of 47,100 Volts

Instant Kill Up to 20' Jet Spray (non arcing formula)

It will drop a man....no keeding...

Mine needs to go back in my truck....behind the console....in case I need it ;)

pmax 08-04-2019 03:58 PM

If you don't want to waste gas, old brake fluid over the ledge.

Should work !

porsche4life 08-04-2019 04:34 PM

Some tricks and old farmer taught me. Hose them down with diesel from a weed sprayer and it eats their wings and keeps them from flying away and you can burn them.

If you are worried about fire or diesel, mix up water with lots of Dawn dish soap in the weed sprayer. You can hose them down and the soap kills em, makes for easy clean up!

KFC911 08-04-2019 04:58 PM

So all this hosing down etc. sounds good but hosing up is a whole nuther matter....

I just kill them dead with instant death....it's there where I am, when I encounter wasps & hornets.

But after a few beers I could do it differently...fire just sounds like fun....or 00 or....

HMBAWT :)!

rfuerst911sc 08-04-2019 05:09 PM

I just came in from releasing the stream of fury ! Happy to report no stings on the human . I used about 3/4 of the can , soaking the exterior of the hive and filling the entrance hole. They were not happy but gave up quickly . Will inspect tomorrow morning and go from there . Ultimately I want to remove or burn the nest .

Por_sha911 08-04-2019 08:03 PM

Might as well use the other 1/4 of the can and spray it again in the morning before you get too close.

RWebb 08-04-2019 09:56 PM

congrats - let's see a pic of the sprayed nest, dead hornets, and FLAMES!!

cstreit 08-04-2019 10:30 PM

Checked this thread like 5 times, learned more about the honey badger, but have to admit it's a little anti-climatical... Glad you're ok though,

Rusty Heap 08-04-2019 11:00 PM

rfuerst911sc 08-05-2019 04:15 AM

I just went out and emptied the balance of the can I used last night plus another partial can I had in the basement . Dead wasps on the ground and didn't see even one come out of the hive when I resprayed this morning . Looks like I can claim victory .

KFC911 08-05-2019 04:23 AM

I just killed a deer....27 rounds of .30-06 :)

Well done!

rfuerst911sc 08-05-2019 05:33 AM

Stick a fork in this one it is done :D Went out with shovel in hand , dislodged the nest with no issues . One wasp staggered out but he was not going to make it long . Inside of the nest was full of dead larvae/eggs that was gross looking  Gave the nest a good toss into the woods mother nature can now recycle .

KFC911 08-05-2019 05:38 AM

I'm not quit done yet...just reloaded :)!

T77911S 08-05-2019 07:30 AM

I guy I use to work with had his own business for getting rid of animals.
he tells this story about a bees hive on the edge of a house.
so he gets up on a ladder with a saw and bag........need I say more.

the guy is hilarious. you will be crying from laughing so hard if you heard HIM tell the story,
